nullPointer, in Which terminal emulator do you use?

eterm because I’m old skool. now get off my lawn.

TheGrandNagus, (edited ) in Is there any future for the GTK-based Desktop Environments?

This article can pretty much be summed up as I don’t like GTK or Gnome so I’m going to just present them being shit as a factual statement. I use Arch and KDE btw.

Gnome 3 released close to 13 years ago and was announced 16 years ago. At some point, people need to stop crying about the UX changes and get the fuck over it.

If you don’t like it, use something else and stop being so entitled.

    See the above. Stop being entitled. It’s their project and most of the work is done by volunteers, for free.

    If you find their product so detestable, don’t use it.

    You don’t have a god-given right to have free volunteers make software in the exact way you want them to.

    They are volunteers working on their own project, not slaves working on yours.

    Honestly nowhere outside of Linux do I see so many people get so much for free and yet be so spiteful and entitled in return.

    arthur, (edited )

    Apple, Microsoft and Google, on the other hand, decides what is best for them, shove it down the users’ throats and get users’ money (and personal data) in return…

    I think some criticism still valid though (but not the entitlement).

    Welcome. I just started using linux recently myself and have been loving it. I would Definitely recommend checking out all the desktop environments to see what works best for you! I’ve done a bit of shopping and I think I’ve landed on KDE, myself.
    Good luck with the transition!

    odium, in How do I get Nviddia drivers to work in arch?
    Liz_thestrange,

    I’m reading again everything to see for something that could help, it’s look like optimus could be a solution, thanks

    warmaster,

    Indeed, since it’s a laptop. It uses the iGPU for battery saving graphics and the Nvidia dGPU for performance. That’s hybrid graphics / optimus.

    That said, Nvidia is a pain. I always recommend distrohopping until you land on a distro that mostly works for your use case and go from there.

    navigatron,

    Optimus gets complex quick. You’ll be reading pci bus ids before you know it. Keep the wiki open, go slowly; you got this :)

    Lol, saaaaaame! I’ve run plenty of Linux servers over the past 30 years with only occasional attempts at desktop Linux, but never got it to graduate past a secondary box or dual-boot. All of the happy Linux desktop users I’ve run across on Lemmy convinced me to give it another go. I tried Ubuntu for a month under the mistaken assumption that it was still a relevant, stable, easy distro (10-15 years ago, it was the distro to use if you just wanted a no-fuss Linux desktop). Snaps made me want to end myself, but not quite give up on Linux altogether, so I pivoted and now I’m on month 3 of happily maining Arch!

    uis, in As a normal, boring user that does nothing special other than browse the internet and the occasional "casual coding" -- what am I supposed to do with 32GiB of ram?
    @uis@lemmy.world avatar

    Compile chromium, firefox or rust

    possiblylinux127,

    At the same time

    uis,
    @uis@lemmy.world avatar

    Only two things. Rust is 12 gigs on disk(which translates into 12 gigs of ram if you use tmpfs) and IDK how much in ram. Chromium is about same. Keep rest of ram for linker.

    jbrains, in Nifty terminal command: xdg-open

    Between this and rifle, all things are possible. Enjoy.
