penquin, in How to update the BIOS on a Dell laptop running Linux
@penquin@lemmy.kde.social avatar

This is way too long and complicated for just a bios update. Dell laptops actually have a “update bios from flash” option in the boot menu. So all you need is a USB stick formatted to FAT32, copy the bios update file (that you download from their website) into it, boot into boot menu and choose “update bios from flash”. I have done this so many times and even made a YouTube video about it.

terminhell,

Mostly on the newer bios machines. Older ones don’t. Same for hp. Lenovo is all over the place.

LodeMike, in Can this be replicated with opensource software?[p2p file transfer over thunderbolt, and extremely low latency Video and game streaming (no encoding)]

Probably. File transfer can be replaced with rsync or something. Video I have no idea. Maybe use a capture card?

Ew Linus, ugh

captain_aggravated, in Looking to switch to Linux in the somewhat distant future
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

In the somewhat distant future you’re looking to switch to Linux. Okay, the question of distros can wait.

What you want to do in the not-too-distant-future if possible is start finding FOSS alternatives to the software you use. Stuff like LibreOffice and Krita have Windows versions, so in the meantime start learning and using those apps. Because that’s the real pain point.

As for distro…distros don’t really matter. Most of the user experience comes from the desktop environment, and that’s a matter of preference so personal that the real answer is “try several and use the one you like.”

thespezfucker,

ok, is gimp supported with linux?

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes. Very yes. the G in GIMP stands for GNU. GIMP ran on Linux before it ran on Windows.

thespezfucker,

mega thanks!

A but hacky, and a pain to set up past 2 windows, but it works. I do this, creating a windowed projector, and then just share only that window.

USB easy transfer cables? Sure, looks like they just present a point to point network, so you can do whatever you want over that link.

krash, in Your favorite linux projects for weekend

There’s so much you could do.

  • have a reverse proxy for your services, as containers
  • connect then through netbyrd or nebula if you want the FOSS route (or headacalescale)
  • set up an IDPS, such as fail2ban, snort, etc
  • Set up a backup job, there’s many projects that does this well - check out Borg and kopia.
  • since we’re on linux, try out different shells. Zsh or fish are pretty popular and pretty to look at.

With Ubuntu Pro. I’ll stick with Alma, thanks.

Host your own Gitea server and then version control your own RPI configs on the RPI. I mean… save them elsewhere also, but it’s yet another thing you could do with that awesome little device.

The text editor that’ll be coming with Cosmic looks pretty slick! I’ve got a loooong way to go with learning rust so maybe I’ll take a look at the iced/pop libraries when Cosmic comes out 👀

You can start with the libcosmic repository, and the examples contained within. We’re going to work on revamping our design demo application soon, which will be a learning resource for COSMIC application development
