Chewy7324, in Docker team is considering distributing Docker Desktop as a Flatpak and Snap

At first I read only docker without the context of the Docker Desktop client.

Making docker a one-click installation on all distros is great, altough I wouldn’t use it myself.

If they actually make a flatpak I wonder whether they’ll only support rootless docker or if it’ll ask for elevated permissions through polkit.

recarsion, in When Windows 10 dies, I am going to jump ship over to Linux. Which version would you recommend for someone with zero prior experience with Linux? **Edit: Linux Mint it shall be.**

I can recommend Mint, it’s fantasically easy and stable, but take a look at distrochooser.de

dubyakay,

This website is a true Linux experience. Can’t click on Start on mobile because the language selector overlaps the button.

Heh the comparison also holds if you use 10=Windows 7 and 11=Windows 8

Or 10=Windows 98 and 11=Windows ME

mvirts, in Is it possible to isolate which GUI programs are seem by a screensharing program in xorg or wayland ?

Idk what exactly you’re asking for, but this is already an option for me on teams in chrome running under Wayland??? Like when I choose start presenting it pops up a dialog with window options including the whole desktop.

taladar,

The same window pops up under xorg too.

kevincox,
@kevincox@lemmy.ml avatar

The difference is that the popup is optional on X. They can also just access the window data directly. On Wayland they have no way to access other windows without asking for permission via the “Portal” popup.

My reason against using Guix is software availability. NixOS repos are just larger, and I like that on NixOS unfree software can be enabled with a single line.

    fishinthecalculator,

with nonguix the lines are like five instead of one, but yes there are less packages than nix. the real selling point imho is how everything is human-sized and consistent

TCB13, in TIL that operating system Linux is an example of anarcho-communism
    @TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

What’s the real difference between an “anarchist communist” and a “communist”? The first one can have “personal property” while the second cant? So… an anarchist communist can own a car but not a house? According to the internet “personal property” is everything that can be moved (not real estate) and isn’t considered for production of something…

    Cowbee, (edited )

A few things draw significant differences.

Anarchism is fundamentally a firm rejection of unjust hierarchy, including the state, via building up of bottom-up structures using networks of Mutual Aid or other strategies (like Syndicalism).

Communism is fundamentally about advancing beyond Capitalism into Socialism and eventually Communism. It’s fundamentally Marxist, unlike most forms of Anarchism (which don’t necessarily reject Marx, but also don’t accept everything Marx wrote). Communists are generally perfectly fine with using the state in order to eventually achieve a Stateless, Classless, Moneyless society, as each becomes unnecessary and whithers away.

In essence, Anarchism rejects that a state is necessary at all, and seeks to directly replace current systems with the end-goal of an Anarchist structure, whereas Communists tend to agree more with gradual change, rapidly building up the productive forces, and achieving a global, international Communism.

Anarcho-Communism seeks to combine these into directly implementing full Communism without going through Socialism first.

All of this is from a generally Leftist perspective, without leaning into any given tendency, as I believe the most critical battles now are building up a sizable leftist coalition. Everyone should focus on organizing, unionizing, reading, learning, sympathizing, empathizing, and improving themselves and those around them.

    AaronMaria,

I’ve never heard anyone argue against personal property. Usually the difference is that Anarchists want to skip the workers’ state, while other Communists think it’s a necessity to achieve Communism.

    Lianodel,

A big part of the confusion comes from the fact that different people will use these terms differently.

In a capitalist framework, there’s private property and public property. Either an individual (or or specific group) own something, anything, or it’s owned by the government.

In a socialist framework, private property is distinguished from personal property. Personal property is your stuff that you use for yourself. Your coat, your car, your TV, etc. Private property is the means of production, or capital—things that increase a worker’s ability to do useful work. Think factories or companies, where ownership in and of itself, regardless of labor, would make the owner money. Socialists think that kind of private property shouldn’t exist, because it means wealthy people can just own stuff for a living, profiting off of the people who do the work.

Housing can go either way. Owning a home for yourself and your family would be far closer to personal property, while owning an apartment building to collect rent would be far closer to private property.

Socialism, for the most part and historically, is an umbrella term describing social rather than private ownership. That would include anarchism, which largely synonymous with “libertarian socialism.” Lenin, on the other hand, used it to more specifically refer to an intermediate stage between capitalism in communism, so you might see people using that more narrow definition to exclude anarchists, democratic socialists, etc.

version_unsorted, in Steam not launching games - no idea what to do [Solved]

Usually I start debugging this type of thing by killing all instances of steam and then launching it from command line. Steam logs a bunch of good stuff and putting it in context of your interactions helps. That said, based on what you’ve described, I would try older versions of proton, targeting releases back when games were launching. Proton/wine versions don’t always work for all games and sometimes you’ll need to launch particular titles with specific versions. Proton has been absolutely revolutionary, but these issues still pop up. ProtonDB might have reports on specific versions for specific games/titles.

    version_unsorted,

It looks like dayz is gold, rather than platinum, meaning it will take a little tinkering. www.protondb.com/app/221100

    Critical_Insight,

Yeah I followed the instructions there and it worked without an issue for several weeks and then just stopped working.

    lemmyvore,

You can also try starting a Linux game, if you have any, just to figure out if Proton is the issue.

    Critical_Insight,

But what’s strange is that it worked with proton experimental untill this point and that I had this exact same issue earlier on Windows 7 aswell on this same PC. I however did try using proton 8 but that made no difference. I need to try those other versions too

    Dremor,
    @Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

Proton experimental moves quite a lot. Maybe they moved to a new version of something that broke your install for a reason or another.

FederatedSaint, in I'm so frustrated rn.

This is the kind of post that scares me away from trying Linux.

    SheeEttin,

Why? Under Windows or Mac OS too, there’s always something that doesn’t quite work right.

My current work forces me to work with Apple (because they are lazy to prepare Linux for working), I have been on Linux for almost 10 years and I really want to quit my Job because of this stupid Apple laptop, it is trash, the DE is stupid, and I have many issues (with settings, login items, alacritty not working… yabai stopped to work without any reason…) that stresses me a lot… So good, I love my work and I still enjoy working, but the macOS is pure trash.

    atzanteol,

Then stay away. If you don’t like to tinker with things it’s not for you.

    474D,

I was in the same boat but Linux Mint just literally worked. Easiest transition ever. I keep my Windows dual boot because I need MS Office for work but I’m in mint 95% of the time with no tinkering.

    18107,

You can always try Linux risk free in a virtual machine like VirtualBox.

If you like what you see, and you have any valuable data backed-up, you can try dual booting. That way you get to use Linux as your primary operating system, but can switch back and forth as much as needed.

I found I was dual booting Windows and Linux for over 3 years before I was comfortable enough to stop using Windows entirely. Switching to Linux doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing approach. You can take it as slow as you want.

Mtp is your friend, here is hiw I do it on my devices (samsung a23 and both opensuse and arch):

    • I connect my phone to my pc. Then select mtp in the phone notification.
    • Start my file manager (dolphine or whatever) and access my phone storage from there.
    • Make sure to allow the notification on the phone asking if you want to sahre your storage with the external device.
