Pantherina, (edited ) in What's your experience with bluetooth audio?

Fedora Kinoite, working just as well as on Android (GrapheneOS)

Using Pipewire. The issue really is the shitty firmware of my headphones.

dark_stang, in What's your experience with bluetooth audio?
@dark_stang@beehaw.org avatar

Bluetooth sucks on all platforms. It may be worse on Linux, but given how often my coworkers on Mac and Windows have audio issues it meetings, not by much.

Get a good set of RF wireless headphones and only use Bluetooth when you’re traveling.

You will find what you further need on the go, no need to get more ready than what you’ve already done.

nyan, in please help me, why is this happening??

Ooh, CRT monitor. And that’s an odd resolution that it’s suggesting. You could try driving it at 1280x1024 at 60Hz. If that doesn’t work, try 800x600 at 60Hz, which is the traditional lowest SVGA resolution (picture may be slightly distorted if it really is a 5:4 monitor). If that doesn’t work, try the traditional VGA resolution of 640x480 just to get something going. I’d recommend using X as Wayland has probably not been tested very much on hardware this old. And it almost certainly has no clue how to deal with a widescreen resolution or a resolution wider than its “Recommend mode”.

(I was still using a 17" CRT with X at 1280x960 up to about five years ago. I had no issues ever.)

vaionko,

1280x1024 is really not that pdd for an old LCD. And yes,to me that looks like an LCD instead of a CRT. Way too flat and matte for a CRT.

SLGC, in Is the Windows Subsystem for Linux worth it?

Since wsl2 supports cuda, my gaming computer can run open source deep learning models so easily it’s stupid. I’m mainly using it to rip music from youtube and split it into stems for music production using Facebook demucs. I tinkered a bit with stable diffusion models a while back too. It’s pretty sweet, especially since windows sees the linux drive as just another directory, so my DAW can just bookmark it. It’s so seamless.

Win 11 is still garbage for privacy and ownership reasons though. MS can fuck a duck, but they make some pretty baller software.

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

That’s an interesting use case.

SLGC,

I’ll emphasize the point that this goes for any kind of machine learning model that can benefit from CUDA, which means a large amount of gaming computers already meet the prerequisites for this. Installation is trivial (but requires some knowledge), and I hope to see more ML applications for hobbyists in the near future. Image generation and locally hosted GPT models come to mind.

MiddledAgedGuy, in Cleanest way to maintain AppImage installations?

I symlink the AppImage. It’s still a manual process in that you have to recreate the symlink but feels like less of a hassle than updating the desktop file.

Gecko, in Cleanest way to maintain AppImage installations?

Not to be that person but I’m curious what made you go with AppImage over Flatpak, given that you already mentioned using the Flatpak as an alternative ^^"

Force of habit, I’ve started using Flatpak only recently

rufus, (edited ) in Noob question: what to arrange before switching to linux

I’m not so sure if taking screenshots of exact settings is the correct mindset. Sometimes you have a different selection of software available and you might for example want to change your email-client or learn a new video editor because some other software works better on linux or is tied into the system better. You also need to adapt a few workflows to be maximally effective. Because some things just work differently on Linux.

I think your approach is quite good. All I want to say is: I’ve seen people get very disappointed with Linux. Especially if they try to recreate their Windows-experience closely. Be prepared to let go of your now perfectly configured software and start fresh with more things than you currently anticipate.

But Linux is awesome. I think the most important thing is to do a backup first. In case something goes wrong and you accidentally wipe your harddrive or you need to go back.

Papanca,

I should have clarified that i’m not copying all settings from all programs, just the ones that i use a lot and are important to me, from programs that i will have on linux as well. For instance, i already use libreoffice and will just copy the tweaks i made so as to not to reinvent the wheel.

As for disappointment; i have used Kubuntu in the far past, so it’s not like i know absolutely nothing about Linux, thankfully. In fact, when i ran the live KDE image, it was quite fun that many of the programs i used back then, still came with it, like Kate and the pdf reader and such.

Backups, good point! I already have everything important backupped on protondrive and a home server, but i will check how i can backup windows/settings; i do see two programs called Window recovery drive and Windows backup program, so will check out how that works and if that is what i would need. Thanks for your input!

rufus, (edited )

Fair enough. Yeah I see you’re getting lots of good advice here. I think you’re pretty well set. Wish you the best, and hope the switch works out smoothly and you’ll have some fun.

(And you’re right. Tweaking LibreOffice and things like that is more work than a fun activity. I too would take every shortcut available and focus on more interesting things. And your experience won’t be annoying at all if you already use the same free/libre office suite and other stuff. And already had a look at everything…)

@daredevil@kbin.social avatar

It sounds like you've taken the appropriate precautions. I'm sure others will have better suggestions, but perhaps you can try running a VM for a week or so as if you've made the switch and take note of anything you feel you may be lacking.

Papanca,

I’ve been running a live distro and doing exactly that. So far, so good :-)

To a “newbie”, what does this mean? I transitioned to Linux full time less than a year ago and settled with KDE. Will this affect me in any way?

TJmCAwesome, in KDE Plasma 6 Megarelease - Beta 1

Will this affect SteamOS in any way? I guess the development on that is separate from KDE but I don’t really know.

fxt_ryknow, in Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?

Personally I’m not a fan of dual booting. Admittedly it’s been many years since I have evn tried (now that virtualization is what it is), but when I did, grub would always break on me. It just wasn’t worth the hassle. Now to think of having to reboot to switch just makes me cringe. Lol

CsXGF8uzUAOh6fqV, in Laptop not working after installing nimdow
@CsXGF8uzUAOh6fqV@lemmy.world avatar

FYI, the options at boot have nothing to do with this. At boot you might have different options for different OS’s. When you pick linux, it will start up. Only after login will a DE/WM like Gnome/Nimdow start. If you install multiple WM’s, they will not show up in your boot menu. Some login managers allow you to switch between them at login.

Tumbleweed for over 10 years, if you know how to roll back with snapper there is nothing to lose.

Pheonixtail, in I have a Windows PC connected to a company AD. Is there a way to access the shared company resources from within a Linux environment?

My understanding is that there are modules you can install to AD join a linux machine, i don’t know much about it unfortunatly because it’s not something i’ve ever had to do. I’m also unclear whether there is a different process per distro type.

I would speak to your company IT about it tbh.
