not sure if it really counts but I like Universal Blue, specifically using their silverblue-framework image because it already has all the drivers and stuff set up for my Framework laptop

ricecake, in When Windows 10 dies, I am going to jump ship over to Linux. Which version would you recommend for someone with zero prior experience with Linux? **Edit: Linux Mint it shall be.**

Ubuntu, mint, fedora, Manjaro are all pretty much in the same class, and it’s largely irrelevant which you pick. They’re all supported, have decent UI for most of what you want to do, and have good documentation for how to do it.

It’s not too difficult to change distros without having to move all your data once you’re switched, so it doesn’t matter too much, and you’ll probably try a couple before finding the one with the best menus for you.

Kongar,

I would recommend endeavor over manjaro. Manjaro has issues with the aur.

And I’d recommended if either of these are your first foray into linux, then dual boot with a windows install still functioning (because a noobie will break arch once or twice)

lemmyvore,

Manjaro has issues with the aur.

Not this again. Please stop parroting this, it’s ridiculous and it only says “I don’t know how AUR works”.

taladar, in Easy way to try out a bunch of different DEs?

You could use netboot.xyz to boot a bunch of Live systems from various distros relatively quickly (depending on your download speed).

g_damian, in Easy way to try out a bunch of different DEs?

Grab live cd and run it in qemu:

<span style="color:#323232;">qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -machine type=pc
</span><span style="color:#323232;">-cpu host -smp 2
</span><span style="color:#323232;">-m 4096 -device virtio-balloon
</span><span style="color:#323232;">-vga virtio -display sdl,gl=on
</span><span style="color:#323232;">-usb -device usb-tablet
</span><span style="color:#323232;">-boot d -cdrom "$@"
</span>
Auzy, in Distro for POS

if it is for a small shop, whatever you’re used to.

For mass deployment, you’ll want to probably use something with proper support

Yes, SUSE Linux Enterprise Point of Service often ends up being a source of “Linux in the wild” posts.

I love Solenes website (and contents), this should be the norm.

14 versions and they still haven’t got it right? SMH.

Yeah all I see is 14 huge failures. :)

Linux version 6 is a bit of a stretch though since it’s just the kernel. I guess they could have put Ubuntu 23 up there to make it “win”…

jalda,

Fedora 39 is clearly superior to Ubuntu 23

I guess. I had lots of issues with Fedora in the past so can’t recommend it personally but some people like it.

rodbiren, in I'm so frustrated rn.

Linux Mint is where I always go crawling back to. I have hopped so damn much. Mint sometimes needs a newer kernel installed, but I’ll be damned if that Ubuntu base doesn’t help with printers, graphics drivers, and scanners. Getting that to work on Arch was a blast and a half, on Mint I literally just turned my network printer on and it found it. IDK, you can do anything and there is always some issue eventually.

specter2426, in What's your current favorite distro that isn't Arch, Debian or Fedora?

I really enjoy ZorinOS! I’ve been using ZorinOS 16.3 and am awaiting the upgrade to 17 through their tool. It’s been great for a PC that has an Nvidia GTX1060 that I have hooked up to my TV as a twitch/YouTube/Netflix box. I chose Zorin because they claimed to get the Nvidia drivers installed correctly “out of the box”, and they delivered!

474D,

Glad it worked well for you. Didn’t work well for me with my 2070 super. Was immediately broken and refused to acknowledge my second monitor. Linux Mint worked perfectly, so I just want to throw that out there for anyone with the same gpu

specter2426,

Man that sucks that it didn’t work for you out of the box. I had tried Solus and Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 and I couldn’t get the screen to resize past the default 800x600 or something like that and the refresh rate was stuck at a low number. Zorin did it all straight away. I hope more distros start getting the whole picture right soon. Glad you found something that worked for you too!

galloFino, in What's your current favorite distro that isn't Arch, Debian or Fedora?

Ubuntu is so easy to use!!

pastermil, in Easy way to try out a bunch of different DEs?

Usually when you have multiple DEs installed, the login manager would let you choose.

Just need to make sure the autologin don’t get in the way of your choice (e.g. select it thru autologin or disable it completely).

Gentoo for the documentation, but for a modern comp with bad bootloader implementation, Fedora’s anaconda system for the secure boot shim is irreplaceable and my daily. I won’t consider any distro without a shim and clear guide for UEFI secure boot keys. In that vain, Gentoo is the only doc source I know of that walks the user through booting into UEFI directly with Keytool.

Trent, in I'm so frustrated rn.

I’ve found ubuntu distros to be pretty good for 'stuff just works". My daily driver is xubuntu. That said, I’ve never tried using a printer with it. Good luck OP.

warmaster, (edited ) in Recent GNOME design work – Form and Function

I wish GNOME was better than KDE for gaming. GNOME is so freaking sexy, I miss it so much.

Edit: apparently I need to clarify, KWIN (KDE’s compositor, has way better support for Wayland than Mutter (GNOME’s compositor).

folkrav,

Not too sure what your desktop environment has to do with gaming.
