andrew_bidlaw, (edited ) in how do i efficiently attach audio to an image
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Can you intentionally set various bitrate (VBR) with a big difference, like from 16mbps max to 1mbps min? Constant bitrate can be your problem. Premiere had this on media export menu, I can’t remember where others have this. And, if you want to upload it to youtube, see what size it has on a private upload by downloading it - they reencode every video themselves to their uniform standard, so maybe you don’t even need to bother with that.

I wouldn’t call mint old. It has

    • Massive repos and tons of 3rd party ones
    • A reasonably modern desktop environment( if you don’t like it get a theme pack, or are you to lazy to install a theme.)
    • Stability which most new users will value a lot, as I’m sure they don’t want to learn exactly how Linux works on day 1.
    • Everything just works out the box on reasonably well supported hardware( aka the manufacturer gives a dam about Linux users or it’s a thinkpad)

So I don’t see how mint is a boomer OS because unless you’re a dev or an enthusiast it has everything you need

    vzq,

So I don’t see how mint is a boomer OS

It’s what I put on my dad’s laptop, so in his case it’s literally BoomerOS.

upt, in Is anyone using awk?

No, but I heavily use perl still… I feel like you can’t really call yourself a Linux person without knowing perl and python both. Knowing awk can’t hurt though.

    sping,

Really? I disliked Perl for 3 decades on unix and Linux and I’ve never felt like I have been held back by not knowing or using it. I don’t remember the last time I saw a Perl script, let alone needed to understand one.

SpaceNoodle, in Is anyone using awk?

I haven’t found a use for awk that couldn’t be accomplished with bash builtins or other common commands.

GenBlob, in Gentoo goes Binary (packages)

This is what Gentoo needed. I’ve been using it for a long time and love it as it is but sometimes when there’s a bunch of slot conflicts or a compile error it makes me wish I just dealt with binaries instead. Now that we have the best of both worlds, it will make Gentoo appeal to a wider userbase and make it less painful to use on older hardware.

Secret300, in Gentoo goes Binary (packages)

That weirdly makes me wanna try it less. That was it’s whole thing. It’s a convenient thing tho

    Krause,
    @Krause@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Why “less”? Gentoo is about choice, you can still compile all packages, this just gives you the option to install binaries if you prefer that.

chitak166, in KDE's Nate Graham On X11 Being A Bad Platform & The Wayland Future

Eh, I always discredit people when they say X is bad.

It’s been around for over 20 years. That kind of longevity should be praised.

Joker, in Experience with KDE on Fedora?

Yeah, it works fine. You might want to tinker with the packages as others have suggested but it’s exactly what you expect from Fedora. The only difference is it’s Plasma instead of GNOME.

I had the same experience with GNOME on the family computer. I had to add extensions to make it more accessible. Then when they auto update you get dumped into vanilla GNOME until you log out and back in to re-enable extensions. I would get called over every time that happened. I switched it to Plasma and everyone is happy.

One thing worth pointing out is the dash to dock/panel, just perfection and appindicator GNOME extensions are all in the Fedora repository. When you install them from there, you don’t get that janky behavior during updates where you have to re-enable them. Those extensions go a long way towards making GNOME more accessible to users coming from Windows or Mac. Default GNOME is great if you use keyboard shortcuts but it’s not very intuitive when you’re starting out.

    mortalic,

I don’t think you could have explained this any better… yeah, this exactly. I don’t want to get a phone call every time the update the damn system. Gnome can be different, simple, that’s fine, but it has to do that and get out of the way. If you make changes to it, it has to respect those changes. Everything else is garbage.

thayer, (edited ) in Writing program

While I’m a big fan of Vim, it’s definitely not for everyone.

I spend about half of my writing time in VSCodium, which is a community-based release of Microsoft’s open source VS Code editor. There are several markdown, grammar, and focus-oriented plugins for the platform, and you can pretty much shape it into whatever kind of editor you want.

I use VSCodium for the vast majority of my personal notes, technical writing, and project documentation (nearly all of which are written in markdown format).

Donovar, (edited ) in Where can I post questions on how do construct formulas in Onlyoffice/Libreoffice spreadsheets?

Are the numeric values always correctly sorted in the cells below the alpha data cells? IE, youd never have A numeric values, then B numeric values, then more A numeric values?

Also just to be clear, are you putting the results in a single cell, or does the comma in your example denote separation between two cells? I’m guessing two cells. I want to work on this, but I just want to make sure I’m working on the correct thing :)

    BlindFrog,

To clarify the first, yes to your example, I think so. I’m trying to optimize my scanning process, so, optimally, yes, I would only record all A numeric values in one go, and not come back to them again for the rest of the list. Good question; I never thought about this as a complication. So, I have shelves among shelves with a strict naming convention and containers with a different naming convention. I’m figuring out how to help me and my family be lazier and just capture the shelf name, then all the stuff there, then move on to the next place.

To clarify the second concern, yeah, I meant to make the comma denote two separate cells. I’m not sure how to make a table on lemmy through the Boost app.

    Donovar,

No worries! I just like to be absolutely sure, because I’ve seen a lot of fringe cases in excel that really make you think hard about how you’re going to lay everything out. I just wanted to be sure before I worked on it. I love Excel, though, and wouldn’t have minded doing it over lol.

The formulas in my other reply should absolutely work. Let me know if you need help with that!

Also, I’d definitely be interested in a “Libre/OpenOffice help” group. I think it’s fun finding creative and clean ways to solve things that seem difficult.

    Donovar, (edited )

Actually, shoot… After rereading your reply, I might have taken your example data too literally. Are the alpha values truly always alpha and your numeric values always numeric? Otherwise it won’t work, and I’ll have to find another solution.

    Donovar, (edited )

Okay, I couldn’t wait so here are my formulas based on the following parameters:

1.) Numeric data always follows in rows after the correct alpha value. IE Anything between A and B values in the A column belong to the A group. Anything between the B and C values in the A column belong to the B group.

2.) You want the output to be in two separate columns.

Given that your input data is in column A and the value “A” begins at A1, here is your formula for B2 (B1 will be empty as there is no numeric value to tie to A1)

    =IF(ISERROR(A2/1),“”,A2)

This will put numeric values only that are in column A into column B.

Again, given that your input data is in column A and the value “A” begins at A1, here is your formula for C2 (C1 will again be empty as there is no numeric value for your array in A1)

    =IF(ISERROR(A2/1),“”, IF(ISERROR(A1/1),A1,IF(ISERROR(C1/1),C1,1)))

This will put the correct alpha values from column A into column C in the same rows as the numeric values from column B. If something goes really wrong, it will place the number 1.

Given that there are no gaps in your data, you should just be able to fill down and it’ll appropriately put the correct values into columns B and C. At that point, I’d just paste the values of columns B and C into a new sheet (or columns) and sort the data to remove the blank rows.

I just tested it in LibreOffice Calc, and it works perfectly (given those parameters).

    Edit: Repeated a word.

    BlindFrog,

I definitely feel like saying it again - it works! Thank you. For sure, I can modify the if statement for what I’m working with. Thank you so much!

    Donovar,

    Any time!

    Donovar,

Still thinking about this, if the “alpha” value in column A is actually a date value, this formula would need more checks. Let me know if that’s the case, and I can work something out.

    BlindFrog,
    Donovar,

    Nice!

    onlinepersona,

Just FYI, There’s a button called “print screen” or “PrntScr” or something similar on most keyboards. If you hit that, it’ll take a screenshot that you can edit and upload :)
