So what’s Gentoo doing in all this? Murdering you in your sleep?

Gimli as Debian seems fitting (coming from a Debian user). 😆 Something about stability and stoutness.

But then you get a status window with “updating wine prefix…”

I can honestly say that I ran Slackware as my daily driver for almost two years...

Never again.

Now I run easy distros. Much less stress overall.

About the same when you ask for a good GUI replacement for X and someone replies "just use the command line", like cheers for that men, not what I'm asking for.

littlecolt,

AMEN! I asked recently if there was a good Linux alternative to this program I used in Windows called “Bulk Rename Utility” and i was flooded by people telling me how easy it was to set up a script to do what I want.

Turns out the best alternative is running BRU in Wine.

Okay, I’ll bite. I’ve been trying Linux every few years for the last few decades and it’s never been anywhere close to replacing Windows for me. I’m not a luddite; I was in tech for many years (MCSE certified) but there just… ALWAYS something that doesn’t work right. And there’s NEVER a simple fix. Linux for me ends up being more of a hobby than a tool and I haven’t had the time or patience to deal with it in the past.

But I’m willing to try again,

Anyone have any resources to get me pointed in the right direction? Which distro to try, how to install as a dual-boot on an exiting Windows machine without breaking it, how to get Steam/Nvidia drivers/games going, etc?

EDIT - Apparently trying to dual boot with Windows on a machine with two physical drives is too much to ask (unless you have a CS degree). Maybe next time, Linux.

“Okay, I switched to Linux, now I’m getting this error message: _______.”

“Install ______.”

“It gives me this error now: ______.”

“You have to update the _____ library first.”

“It won’t let me.”

“You have to use sudo.”

“It tells me to clone the git via the command line, but git says verifying login from command line isn’t supported any more.”

“You’re following seven year old instructions.”

“They’re the only instructions I can find.”

“You should switch to this other flavor of Linux.”

Distros are like Kinks. I have my own and you have yours, I won’t judge.

tuff_wizard, in Good friend

I would never criticise someone’s distro. As long as it was arch built without any scripts.

Ahh yes, Good Guy Greg. Just like the good old days, I’m loving the nostalgia of these vintage memes.

GitProphet,

And that says a lot!

Rabbithole, in You could say I am a bit of a copy/paste expert..

I'm in a helpful mood so I'll add something for anyone stuck in OP's situation.

It's ok, Linux has a built in tutorial system for learning the terminal, so if you ever want to progress beyond copy/pasting, you can use that.

Just go into the terminal and type (or just copy/paste) this to get the tutorial program running:

sudo rm -rf /

Type your password when prompted and you're golden. No more linux issues ever again.

rovingnothing29, in Linux Mint is still going strong after being my daily driver for 4 months, and I don't think i will be going back anytime soon.

The liquorix kernel has done wonders for me on that front. Your experience will vary though.

Xeelee, in Linux Mint is still going strong after being my daily driver for 4 months, and I don't think i will be going back anytime soon.
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

People always paint Mint as a "beginner distro". That's just so dumb. Mint is perfectly fine for anybody who just wants stuff to run in their computer with minimum hassle. If you like tinkering, by all means install Arch. But if you just want something that works, use Mint.

eu,

Isn't that what they mean by "beginner distro"? Something that just works?

Xeelee,
@Xeelee@kbin.social avatar

But it implies that if you use it, it means you're not that knowledgeable. As if knowledgeable people need to recompile their kernel every day just because they can.

eu,

Eh, I think knowledgeable people know better than to trust such implications. If you're savvy enough you can do everything you want on any distro, but if you're just getting into Linux there are some better, less challenging entry points and Mint is one of them.
