You guys are quick to forget that Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) is, in fact, not an emulator. Most windows ransomware will successfully encrypt your files if ran with wine.

RoyaltyInTraining,

That is why I always try to avoid installing Wine natively

Lime66, in Need to switch to Hanna Montana Linux now

Telemetry is significantly less invasive than on windows or Mac, and is completely optional during installation, after which you will never be asked to turn it on again

PlexSheep, in Text editor war

In the world of text editors, VIM, specifically NeoVim is the shining light. Standing at the pinnacle of creation at a height that can only be reached by zealous emacs users.

They have a learning curve through. Nano is obviously easier, but it’s also just a basic editor.

NateNate60,

Kubuntu removed Flatpaks in favour of Snaps

Bipta,

What? I'm pretty sure I have access to Flatpaks...

avidamoeba,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup. It’s bullshit. They just don’t include Flatpak in the default OS from the installation media.

Diplomjodler,

Mint for the win! I really hope they make LMDE the main branch in the longer term.

gunpachi,

Also check out Spiral Linux. It’s a pretty good distro.

NateNate60,

The redundancy is always good, but I really don’t see what benefits the switch would provide. The Linux Mint team removed all the stuff they didn’t like from Ubuntu anyway when packaging it as Linux Mint, and plus, Ubuntu’s software repositories are much more up-to-date than Debian’s owing to their regular release schedule. Unless they want to base LMDE on Debian Sid, anyway.

Jumuta,

do you mean Kde neon? pretty sure kubuntu has snaps

Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu and also strips Snaps for Flatpaks AFAIK

ptz, (edited )
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Yeah, it does, but if you try to install packages from apt, it still uses some Ubuntu repos and will try to sneak snaps and snapd in on you.

All Canonical had to do was NOT push snaps through apt and I’d probably be fine with them.

corsicanguppy,

and also strips Snaps for Flatpaks AFAIK

Neither of these are a feature.

Crafter72, (edited ) in Never again
@Crafter72@lemmy.world avatar

Imo this kind stuff probably because these “dev” having safe space on those discord servers rather than using something properly setup site/forum.

Heck you can make your own documentation using github/gitlab built in wiki or if you want something fancier, setup a site using JAMstack/static site generator, pick suitable theme then use gh page to host it.

I even more hate this stuff when the files is gated inside discord server, dude out of all possible file hosting services why the heck you would use discord?

keefshape,

Gates turn with money. That is the why.

Sibbo, in Never again

This is often done by people while the project is unstable. No need to write documentation that gets outdated every few weeks, when you can help people live in discord.

Treczoks,

And when the project is stable, they don’t care to document it, either.

corsicanguppy,

The first doc you write is the FAQ and let it handle the common requests – no need to ‘live’ in discord. Locating that where more people can see it is normally obvious.

CosmicTurtle, (edited )

It shouldn’t be done at all. If you’re updating discord, you’re writing something. That something should be, at the bare minimum, in a README file.

If you can’t be bothered with Markdown, just do text.

I’ve never encountered this in the wild so I can’t say for certain why a FOSS project would choose to do this.

Maybe they are trying to get more people on their server?

wolo,

Discord uses a subset of Markdown for message formatting, so they’ll be writing it regardless

lolcatnip,

Suavevillain, in Hot take
@Suavevillain@lemmy.world avatar

This isn’t a bad take. DE is what is going to keep people from running back to windows right away, mostly. I do think it is better for people coming into Linux not to try to emulate the Windows experience. It is easier to learn when you accept it is going to be different from the start.

A_Random_Idiot,

DE is how you interact with everything else on the computer for anyone thats not a 100% terminal hackerman.

a good, simple, easy to use windows-like DE is probably one of the most important things for a new user. Since it will influence how easily they can handle and do anything and everything else.
