Excellent! I'm so glad I subbed. I wasn't terribly active outside a few subreddits that interested me over in the other place, so I missed like 99.98% of what communities it had. This though, brings a huge grin to my face.

darcy,

Thank you

HR people tend to be extremely anti employee and see ulterior motives everywhere. They essentially never even mingle with other employees. It's such an odd career to pursue.

Rashnet, in Follow the expense policy to the letter, he said.
@Rashnet@kbin.social avatar

Love the way you worked this against HR. I had a situation kind of like yours once where we got a per diem daily for a hotel and one meal. The company let us keep the leftover money from the per diem until they hired a new manager that insisted we turn in the extra (it wasn't much maybe $5-25). Fine, we all started getting more expensive hotel rooms and spending the rest on food using every cent they gave us. . After about 2 years the guy who made us turn in the leftover money left and we went back to being able to keep the extra money.

eyy,

oh I'm sure that's a common story too!

MrVilliam,

I had a P card and would expense food on the road, so no per diem to worry about. I didn't travel super often, so I would use this opportunity to treat myself on the company dime, choosing food and drink that often went beyond the limits of what we were allowed to get. So I would just pick whatever the fuck I wanted and tell my server/bartender that I was gonna be splitting my solo check: $X on company card, everything else including tip on my personal card. I'd get whiskey or beer or wine and steak or lamb or something like that. I would wind up with excellent meals for like $10 out of pocket. But because I rarely traveled, my company mileage and fuel costs were like 5% of everybody else's in my district, so my monthly expense reports were almost always under $1k (usually more like $300) while everybody else was routinely $5-10k. So thankfully, nobody was dumb enough to give me a slam dunk malicious compliance story haha.

I do the same thing in a python script, move the mouse every 5 mins. So slack is never away. Fuck micromanagement

Harpuajim, in [REPOST] You can't continue working from home because you go idle in chat too often

You should get a mouse jiggler.

fhein,

Probably ought to get something that physically moves the mouse then. It's pretty common for companies to install software that monitors running programs etc., and if they keep track of how often you go idle on Teams they probably would find it suspicious if you have mouse jiggler running on your computer.

evistre,

Mouse jiggler that sits underneath your mouse. Plug your mouse into the work computer, plug the jiggler into something else.

At the moment I open wordpad on my laptop, put a nail clippers on the keyboard with my wallet on top of it and it will keep me active in Microsoft Teams as long as I want.

ehyuman,

just don't run out of memory, gl!

I’m a remote employee in a similar position, I also finish my work in about 3-4 hours in any given day (mileage varies). My performance reports have been at a consecutive 100% and I don’t see why I should change my ways. Honestly I don’t give a damn if people think I’m slacking off if I go and do some gardening during the day, if anything finishing my work early just makes me very productive :)

dystop,
@dystop@lemmy.world avatar

as long as you have good bosses who don't see time-in-chair as a metric of performance...

fennec,

We use Teams and if I notice that I’ve been on the yellow idle icon for too long I’ll give my mouse a jiggle, at which point I see all my colleagues are on idle too… it’s a very relaxed environment. I hope you can continue working remotely in the future!

PiedPipetter,

The problem with Team is it goes yellow when IT'S idle, not you. That was a big adjustment when we went to Teams, understanding that someone can be furiously working away at their computer while Teams is reporting yellow. You send them a message and BAM it goes green when they see the notification and read your message. Pretty ridiculous, really, since the bulk of the software is all Microsoft...why can't Outlook tell Teams, "Hey, she's writing an email, the icon says green, silly."

I think the standard trick is to use the "Away" status permanently, so it'll never switch you to Idle!

LostRedditor, in [REPOST] You can't continue working from home because you go idle in chat too often

Congrats, that's awesome!

ugo, in [REPOST] You can't continue working from home because you go idle in chat too often

Regarding that part of the second edit: a very wise colleague of mine with managerial duties once told me that he expects people to give 50 to 70% every day. First, it’s unsustainable to give 100% all the time, and burnout has far worse direct and indirect consequences than simply scaling the operation up to allow more slack time. Second, when shit actually hits the fan and you need all hands on deck, there’s no more that can be given if you were already giving it 100%

theblueredditrefugee,

He sounds smart, I bet he didn't get to stay in management for long

dystop,

That's actually pretty smart!

Serdan, in [REPOST] You can't continue working from home because you go idle in chat too often

A good example of how capitalists want exclusive ownership of your time, even to the detriment of productivity.

theblueredditrefugee,

No kidding! It's like they don't even care about profit, they just want to hurt people

sin_free_for_00_days, in [REPOST] You want me to only do what you've assigned me and not help anyone else? Okay then.

That sounds like a much more mature human than just about all the bosses I've worked under.

it's the peter principle. Promote someone to the level of their incompetence.

TheButtonJustSpins, in [REPOST] Fresh stitches under my hat, teacher has a no hats in class policy. Sure thing!

Great story, and it's great to see you over here! I love your writing style.

Aaronjamt,

I'm glad MaliciousCompliance has made it over to Lemmy. It's sad seeing everything on Reddit going downhill rapidly, but that's a separate tragedy.

Nice work. There is just something seriously wrong with some people. Working retail in general is a nightmare. Both because of co-workers and customers.

sometimes the managers too. and sometimes corporate.

like you said retail is just toxic.

YourHorse, in [REPOST] Customer had a "reservation" for the 4th floor at a 3-storey hotel so I took her to the roof

In some countries (e.g. Japan), the floor you enter the building at is the first floor, and in others (e.g. UK) it's the ground floor. So if there are 4 floors, they could be 1, 2, 3, 4, or they could be G, 1, 2, 3.
