Stalinwolf, (edited ) in Guys I won!!!

I know plenty of people dumb enough to take this as proof. I worked with a young guy a few years back who was standing idly by while I discussed PCs and malware with another co-worker. Idle guy joins the conversation to tell us how just recently he avoided some malware himself after receiving a popup from Microsoft saying his PC was infected. The popup included a number on the screen, which he called.

Relieved to have Microsoft looking out for him, buddy calls the number and follows instructions to give the person on the other end remote access. After which, the malware is allegedly removed, and he’s ordered to fork over $100 USD for the services rendered. Still relieved just to have Microsoft looking out for him like this, he forks over his fucking credit card information to pay for work. He finished the story with this very serious nod. A nod that said I really dodged a bullet there.

Poor blessed soul.

Same with nuclear energy.

lud,

Wdym?

ComradeR,

People are most afraid of nuclear energy by two reasons: accidents and wars.

The first has nothing to do with capitalism, we can only trust on workers and expect things to go ok. The second is more a fear mongering by the global north/rich people who want to make everyone worried when a global south country starts to invest in nuclear science and related things. In other words: capitalism influence.

Hell I’d say your double right, accidents are definitely influenced by the system that precipitates them. Redundant safety features, emergency protocol training, protective gear, preventative maintainance…under our current system, all of these things cost money, and since profit is the primary motive, they will be the first things to be slashed when say, the price of energy goes up and they decide to maintain profits by cutting overhead.

Half the episodes on Well There’s Your Problem are “this vital part was removed or left unmaintained for legal or financial reasons until it caused an explosive train derailment.”

“I found in the garden what looks like an old Christmas decoration from the early 1800s.”

CanadianCarl,

The guy is mistaken. It is a troll gem, not a Christmas decoration.

When I was in middle school I got into at least two fights in an outdoor stage that was in plain view from all the windows in the admin office. No security, teachers, or anyone else ever noticed.

I’d like to think it was more because they were these small fights where no one got seriously hurt, rather than the staff not caring at all.

Too late! Run away!

TheFriendlyArtificer, in FYI

People in my neighborhood put their Christmas lights up immediately after Halloween and might take them down before February.

Now I’m no mathetologist, but that’s 1/4 of the goddamned year! It’s not Christmas. It’s sad nostalgia for an aging generation, trying to recreate their own half remembered childhoods, and, like everything else in modern life, late stage capitalism is more than happy to take advantage and milk it for all that it’s worth.

On a serious note, doesn’t having a holiday season take up 1/4 of the year detract from its specialness and solemnity?

Statick, (edited )

I think the answer here is much simpler than that.

It’s warmer early Nov than it is in Dec so putting them up is more enjoyable.

And taking it down later is just pure laziness.

I usually put up my Christmas lights at the end of September if I can. Programmable RGB lights so I can use them for Halloween as well as Christmas. I turn them off between Halloween and Thanksgiving usually, but now I’m seeing tons of Christmas lights already on in my neighborhood and I didn’t actually put my lights up this year. Probably will just go without putting them up this year as I hate going up on the ladder, but I have some RGB spiral trees to put up in the yard at least that I’ll still put out probably after I get back from Thanksgiving break.

To be fair, the bully’s doing it for attention. The quiet kid’s doing it for survival.

the best advice I got in life regarding social interactions (specially at work) is from the penguins of madagascar. Wave and smile. If you can’t wave, nod. Always agree and say “oh my” “really” “that’s great/horrible”. People love me at the office and that’s all I do

KrummsHairyBalls, in Is this what people think about Tor browser?

Biggest issue with Tor is the 1Mbps speeds it gives me on my 1.5Gbps connection.

Also, I decided to go to an onion link for the first time last month, typed in “best onion websites” on Google, clicked the first Reddit link, found the top comment and typed in it first address.

Child porn.

I know onion addresses can be anything, but God damn. Comment is still up on Reddit, also. I believe it was posted a couple years ago.

So I definitely can understand where that idea of Tor comes from lol

Cyanogenmon,
@Cyanogenmon@lemmy.world avatar

I remember when I first used Tor. I was like 14.

Found the silk road when it was still up. Poked around for a bit. Cool.

Next onion site I found was also cp. That image is burned into my skull forever. Uninstalled Tor and never went back. Hard pass.

KrummsHairyBalls, (edited )

Thankfully the front page was not super graphic for me. Still cp, but it was a portal for logging into your account.

Scary part was the photos that were shown, the girls looked very abused. Obviously cp is abuse, but I mean they looked VERY abused and used. Clearly some trafficking shit.

I also immediately uninstalled Tor. I understand it has other uses, but I don’t really need Tor anyway. I was just goofing around and found out.
