dan1101, in Oof ouch owie

I was talking to a lady that had somehow gotten into $500,000 of student loans for herself, her ex husband, and their son. And the payments are about to resume.

PatFussy,

How do you rack up 500k in loans without telling your prodigy that they better do something with it or else its going to fuck everyone up? Like if they didnt go to become lawyers or surgeons then they essentially self sabotaged their entire family.

railsdev,

Time to move abroad and renounce citizenship (if that works, idk)

ImFresh3x,

And move where? No one wants us unless we’re super successful. And if we were we’d pay off our loans. Don’t think the sovereign citizen shit works.

DashboTreeFrog,

Non-US expat living in Asia here. It's crazy how easy it seems for US citizens / westeners to get jobs overseas compared to people from developing nations. I can tell you, if you have a teaching license and developed country's passport there are international schools all over the world willing to pay you well plus living and travel expenses.

DragonTypeWyvern,

Don’t worry, lenders must assume some risk, that’s why we use bankruptcy -

Oh, right.

collegefurtrader,

If the 18 year old borrower assumes all the risk for life, then the interest rate must be zero, right?

JCreazy, in Not today, sorry.

It gets easier the more you do it. Don’t feel bad for not giving away the money you own.

I’m extremely prone to this. On several occasions, I’ve looked up a word using kindles built in library, then see an interesting related word, then I see an unfamiliar word on the same page, then there’s a link about pronunciation, before, finally, I think to myself “Motherfucker, have you been reading the dictionary for an hour?”

boydster,
@boydster@sh.itjust.works avatar

I was just gifted a dictionary of etymology. The Barnhart one. I might be leading you down a dark path here, but you may want to consider adding it to your word-lookup routine if you’re having fun with what you’re doing already.

When companies do good, that's a good economy. Companies do good when they make a lot of profit. Companies make a lot of profit by paying their workers way less than what they make selling the thing they make.

So when workers are ripped off more, the economy does better.

Fuck the economy.

Still had to leave Reddit. Polandball may be fun but I had to stick to my principles. I wish they had their own community board elsewhere.

Also, is that actually the official YouTube channel? Neat, if it is.

    DeterminedBauhinia,

    Yes it is official

    xusontha,

Yeah, I’ve looked around but there doesn’t seem to be any good community around

I’d do something about it but I’m not in the community enough to do a good job

I’m not really offended by the asking for donations at the register thing, as long as those donations go 100% to the charity and it’s a good charity, then doing something to make it easy for people to contribute who wouldn’t otherwise take the time is ultimately a good thing.

The one that annoys me is where they match the donations. It feels like a method to guilt people into it by making their refusal to donate $1 into $2 not being donated.

    Conyak,

I think it is completely inappropriate. Some people can barely afford to live and then have to feel shame and judged when they have to say no.

Letstakealook, in These labels mean much less than you'd think

The history of food labels is really interesting and sad. It’s a classic example of regulatory capture. Even the term “organic” doesn’t come close to what many people think it does. The best most of us can do is find a local farmer or coop you trust, ideally one that practices permaculture, that sells to the public. Unfortunately, that can be a challenge to find and can be prohibitive for those with lower incomes or lack of transportation.

If you like the Wikipedia rabbit hole, check out the Wiki game on your given app store. The basic idea is that you have two separate topics, and you have try to link to the second from the first in as few clicks and time as possible. It’s actually quite fun and you end up reading about some really random stuff.

duxbellorum, in These labels mean much less than you'd think

People who advocate against animal cruelty are a special kind of stupid. Totally destructive of any (fundamentally not so bad) businesses that give time the time of day, and utterly ineffective at actually meaningfully changing the mass cruelty of the meat industry. Absolutely catastrophic virtue signaling. PETA “shelters” have a higher kill (euthanasia) rate than any other organization.

    Phil_in_here,

What the fuck are you try to say? Because one bad organization does bad things, no one can say we should move away from torturing animals for extra profit?

    Floey,

If you actually care about animals dying in kill shelters the solutions are to open more shelters, do more to stop abusive conditions for animals before they get out of hand, and most importantly stop breeding animals. Animals are killed either because shelters don’t want to take them in do to their condition or they are too full. You can blame the no kill shelters as well, because they don’t take in every animal. But they aren’t really to blame either, people who support the industries that breed pets are.

    duxbellorum,

    Preaching to the choir here.

    muddi,

How is it virtue signalling? That’s when someone brags verbally about their position or perspective based on social expectations.

Based on your use of the word “destructive” I assume you’re talking about radical animal activists like the ones who sabotage industrial meat factories, often secretly and anonymously for their own safety.

So, do you really think these really are people who are ineffectual and desiring social reaffirmation of their views? If anything, this group of individuals are exactly those I would call to mind as ones who are not afraid to make actual change in the world they want to see, whatever it takes. Forget if you agree with them or not. It seems absurd to call them ineffective virtue-signallers.

    TheCaconym,

utterly ineffective at actually meaningfully changing the mass cruelty of the meat industry.

There should be no “meat industry” at all you despicable fucking ghoul

“fundamentally not so bad” ? you morally bankrupt imbecile, go watch Dominion

Stop murdering and eating sentient beings

PETA “shelters” have a higher kill (euthanasia) rate than any other organization.

Close to a million cows are murdered daily (not to mention pigs, ducks, etc.) - almost universally after a life of torture or soon after birth - but yeah, sure, shelters kill more, makes total sense

Since you obviously feel guilty (consciously or not) but do not seem to have the basic morality to stop profiting from the mass torture and killing of sentient beings for your personal pleasure, at least have the decency to keep quiet about it instead of trying to jump through logical hoops justifying yourself

    duxbellorum,

It’s more the fact that this movement spends all its energy shutting down Fois Gras and Angora and has had ZERO impact on the wholesale slaughter of sentient beings across the meat industry except to shift a growing portion from farms in the US and Europe where there are some meager standards to farms in asia that have zero scruples and will torture without reserve to make an extra juan.

Fucking useless caricature of activism. All your outrage would be more effectively spent on literally anything else.

    BelieveRevolt,

“Animal cruelty is fundamentally not so bad, and we shouldn’t shut down animal abuse farms because someone else would abuse the animals anyway”

    ok

Literally the same argument as “we shouldn’t pollute less cuz India and China”

    duxbellorum,

Jesus fucking you ARE THE PROBLEM.

It’s not “no point in opposing polution because china would”

It’s literally the same people and they are providing a service that YOU consume (whatever form lf food you eat, any shit you buy off amazon, the car you drive, the phone you use, etc…) all you have said is “it’s fine if you pollute as long as you do not do it in front of me” “it’s fine if you torture animals if it’s not in front of me”
