I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Americans write the date the way we would say it. August 9th 2023.

Gardening is a hobby. You don’t do it to get cheap fruits and veggies.

The results speak for themselves though, and you absolutely cannot beat a tomato right off the vine.

JudahBenHur, in A dollar saved is a dollar earned

Honestly, with my raised beds, between compost, seeds and fertilizer I probably lose money compared to buying tomatoes from the store. Home grown garden tomatoes are 10x better quality than grocery store tomatoes.

Ilflish,

I’ve been told " You don’t say 6th June, do you?" too many times

sunbeam60,

In the U.K. we do all the same. Sixth of June.

Eylrid,

In the US it’s about 50/50 sixth of June and June sixth.

gibs,

How the fuck does second largest to smallest to largest make any kind of sense?

Zacryon, in *Impotent rage*

Some nerding:

From a technical perspective that’s less an issue with people and more an issue with the technology design. People aim for the most comfortable, ergonomic way to hold a smartphone. Which is, you already know it, holding it “vertically” (= long side up, small side sideways). You can easily do it with one hand, whereas you usually need two hands to hold it horizontally. However, it is easily possible to place the camera sensor chip such that it can capture images in widescreen format even when holding the device vertically. Manufacturers usually don’t do this, because they want to allow a more intuitive handling, like “what you see is what you get”. If you hold the phone horizontally, this is directly reflected by a widescreen image and the other way around.

Since people also usually hold their phones vertically when using apps, several platforms, like YouTube for example as well as their content creators, have developed improved support for this. So you can continue mindless scrolling while enjoying more of an image. If the videos / images were in widescreen, the image would be scaled down and details might be missed when holding the device vertically. You would have a lot of black and just a small box in the middle with the images or videos. Probably everyone who reads this will have experienced this.

However, this is of course annoying for people who don’t mind holding the phone horizontally or who are watching videos on a widescreen device like a PC monitor. And that’s not a surprise. We humans evolved to have a larger field of view in horizontal than in vertical direction. We can see more to our sides, but less in up-down directions.

I don’t fear that movies or shows will be recorded in this format (other than for artistic purposes), since that’s a thing where even the comfortable “vertical phone holders” will prefer the wider screen format. But for cheap low effort content or shorter videos and if the target platforms are usually used on smartphones, this is probably a nuisance we have to learn to live with. ;)

I think you meant to write “horizontally” here :)

Zacryon,

Yes. Thank you, a little mistake. Fixed it. :) (After 3 months. :D )

Zacryon, in German shepherds make great guards

In German those dogs are called “Deutsche Schäferhunde”, which literally translates to “German shepherd dogs”. My guess is, that this was simplified to just “german shepherds” over time.

thanks_shakey_snake,

In dog breeding/training circles, people still say “German Shepherd Dog” fairly often, even though you can just omit the “Dog” part in casual conversation. The initialism “GSD” is extremely common, too.

VYTSKA, in HUP!

The amount of massive excel sheets I’ve seen in various departments, when I was working as an office IT was ridiculous.

Some people had to wait for 30 seconds with every minor change and that was “normal”.

Excel != Database

heird,

I’ve worked for a massive corporation in which they had 300mb+ excel files they bought high specs computers just to have them load fast enough and searching would take 3 to 5 minutes we suggested that they’d try moving it to Microsoft access and the query became instant, I can’t imagine the hours wasted waiting for the queries to run

ReadyUser30,

Jesus guys just hire a dba and go to SQL already.

BudgetBandit, in That's unfortunate

The only good thing that the Americanization brought is, that, except the French, the world can communicate with each other in English.

ForbiddenRoot,

I know you are joking but based on my purely anecdotal personal experience, the French (at least in Paris) can now speak and are willing to speak in English much more than a few decades back.

The first time I went to France, almost 25 years back, I had a rough time communicating at restaurants or even buying tickets at the Paris metro stations. Not sure if the latter was an ability or willingness issue because even holding up two fingers and saying “two tickets” was apparently indecipherable. Had to muster my school days French and say “deux billets” to produce instant results.

Edit: And no, the two fingers I was holding up were not the middle finger of each hand :P

Don’t fight it. Just find another hobby that deserves your time and move on with your life. Games haven’t been truly good for a long time. Unless you’re a Twitch streamer or an esports athlete, games shouldn’t be drudgery. “But it gets better after 10 hours,” “you have to get to the endgame before you’re really playing the game,” “you can’t say you’ve played the game unless you did 3+ runs,” “AAA games suck but indies are still good” Man, shut the fuck up, I’m too old for that shit.

If you want to capture the excitement of how you felt when you first played videogames as a child, find a different hobby. Seriously, find a hobby that’s completely out of left field. Gardening, fixing mechanical watches, backyard astronomy, raising an ant farm, croqueting, kayaking, trainspotting. You don’t have to be that aging nerd who constantly malds at how modern videogames suck while continuing to fall for nostalgia bait that’ll always fall below your expectations.

chaircat,

Games haven’t been truly good for a long time

Meanwhile, here I am loving gaming and thinking we’re in a golden age of gaming compared to my youth…

Liberalism,

Or just engage in moderation like every other medium, it’s weird to me that playing videogames is automatically supposed to be a “hobby” but the same doesn’t apply to watching movies or reading books or whatever.

atyaz,

Couldn’t agree more. And even thought I hardly play games anymore, that actually makes them all the more special when I’m excited about a game and play it. It’s rare nowadays, but games like celeste or a short hike were really wonderful. Other than gems that really speak to you though, you really should find another hobby.

SaladevX,

Agreed. My most recent binge was Stray, and before that it was The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening on the switch lmao

I’m only watching if it’s 100% serious. Terry acts as he acts and the entire rest of the movie is as written in the script. Full commit, no comedic rewriting. It’s just Terry playing Snow White.

This isn't unique to video games*. It can happen with anything that you spend a ton of time on, and either burn out on or start to develop more refined taste in. I've had it happen with:

  • novels
  • board games
  • movies
  • people

You start to see patterns, tropes, or just plain get burnt out on something. It's a sign you either need to take a break, or that your tastes have simply become refined enough that you require a higher bar to find something interesting.

I'm in my 40s and definitely don't play games as much as I used to. But there are still times I get sucked in and have a great time. Most recent example: Cosmoteer, a spaceship building game with loads of freedom and creativity. I'm also looking forward to the Factorio DLC and the Dyson Sphere Program combat update.

Edit: case in point that I can still get excited about games: I finally tried Shadows of Doubt and, wow, what an interesting game. It's like a Deus Ex shadowy sneak-around world with detailed voxel simulation.
