Zacryon,

Linus Torvalds had anger issues right from the beginning. At least he got to a point where he is sorry and wants to work on his behaviour.

Zacryon,

What if I told you that you can have constructive discussions without being verbally abusive?

Zacryon,

In the end privatizing means maximizing for profits and not other quality factors though. It would be great if that would lead to increased value and quality of service, but that’s not the reality in our current form of capitalism. Here, it leads to saving costs whereever possible, which finally implies loss of quality.

When it comes to infrastructure like train networks, telecommunication lines or postal services and critical services like hospitals, privatizing is the worst you can do from my point of view. Living in Germany, I see plenty of such examples. Our train service got incredibly worse since it was privatized, hospitals have severe issues on multiple fronts, and let’s not forget how we are extremely sucking with the modernization and upkeep of our telecommunication infrastructure.

Zacryon,

Because we live in a capitalistic society.

Zacryon,

E scooter services are a nice example. They are not covered under state-run public transport. You see those in major cities. There, where they are not required as much due to more dense public transport systems. But there, where they would be really useful, in more rural areas, due to a much less dense public transport system, they are lacking. And why is that? Because profits.

Zacryon,

May I interest you in a (not toilet) paper I skimmed back when Covid was still a bigger issue? doi.org/10.1063/5.0013318

In another, newer, paper (again, not the toilet kind of paper) I just found, researchers basically used lasers to see and analyze the spread of aerosol plumes after flushing: doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-24686-5

Zacryon,

Myth Busters are not a solid scientific source. I discussed the issue a bit, linking to some papers in another comment here: feddit.de/comment/5298414

Zacryon,

Well, you might be doing fine so far. How about others who walk into your poop-plumes? Hygiene is not always only beneficial for yourself. Some easy to implement practises can go a long way. I think it’s a similar story to how we (should) regularly wash our hands, wash vegetables and fruits before eating and so on.

Zacryon,

Depends on the specific engineering branch. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Sometimes nothing at all. But all engineering branches share one thing with physics: math.

Sooo when was the last time you had dog?

Zacryon,

You mean a form of life that I give better care and affection to than they would receive in the wild?

No. The last time you ate dog.

By the way, there are not many dogs in the wild. There wouldn’t be many dogs at all if we wouldn’t breed them.

When was the last time you made direct statements instead of disingenuous leading questions?

Regularly. Yesterday before I went to bed must have been the last time. But I tend to make exceptions when I smell narrow-minded condscending bullshit.

How is your equal respect for vegetables and meat reflected in your daily actions and decisions, also – but not only – considering your diet?

You probably don’t eat dog, do you? If not, how is that not hypocritical? The one animal you eat, the other you don’t. So much for an equal respect and treatment.

Even if, how do you respect the life of the meat you eat? Do you care for each cow yourself? Do you make sure that they are not bred for efficiency, neither having pain nor experiencing fear, live in absolute freedom until they die a natural death and only then you eat their remains?

Zacryon,

Yeah, I guess making more money is helpful to finance a therapy. /j

Zacryon,

I don’t want a pat on the head. I want to overthrow capitalism in its current form and revolutionize our society for the benefit of all and not only a few.

Zacryon,

That doesn’t need to stop us. We got pretty good with breeding animals for specific traits. So you could take dogs which are very massive and breed them until they yield even more meat. Just like we did and do with cows and pigs. Also it is possible to feed dogs on a plant based diet, so it wouldn’t be that much more expensive. (Besides, meat is extremely cheap due to subsidies. It costs much more to have a plant based diet, especially if it’s organically grown. You could also use meat scraps as it is also done for pet food. Further lowering the price.)

Zacryon,

Some nerding:

From a technical perspective that’s less an issue with people and more an issue with the technology design. People aim for the most comfortable, ergonomic way to hold a smartphone. Which is, you already know it, holding it “vertically” (= long side up, small side sideways). You can easily do it with one hand, whereas you usually need two hands to hold it horizontally. However, it is easily possible to place the camera sensor chip such that it can capture images in widescreen format even when holding the device vertically. Manufacturers usually don’t do this, because they want to allow a more intuitive handling, like “what you see is what you get”. If you hold the phone horizontally, this is directly reflected by a widescreen image and the other way around.

Since people also usually hold their phones vertically when using apps, several platforms, like YouTube for example as well as their content creators, have developed improved support for this. So you can continue mindless scrolling while enjoying more of an image. If the videos / images were in widescreen, the image would be scaled down and details might be missed when holding the device vertically. You would have a lot of black and just a small box in the middle with the images or videos. Probably everyone who reads this will have experienced this.

However, this is of course annoying for people who don’t mind holding the phone horizontally or who are watching videos on a widescreen device like a PC monitor. And that’s not a surprise. We humans evolved to have a larger field of view in horizontal than in vertical direction. We can see more to our sides, but less in up-down directions.

I don’t fear that movies or shows will be recorded in this format (other than for artistic purposes), since that’s a thing where even the comfortable “vertical phone holders” will prefer the wider screen format. But for cheap low effort content or shorter videos and if the target platforms are usually used on smartphones, this is probably a nuisance we have to learn to live with. ;)

Zacryon,

Yes. Thank you, a little mistake. Fixed it. :) (After 3 months. :D )

Zacryon,

In German those dogs are called “Deutsche Schäferhunde”, which literally translates to “German shepherd dogs”. My guess is, that this was simplified to just “german shepherds” over time.

Zacryon,

What are your requirements for "curated"? A bunch of different people will have a bunch of different interests and would therefore find a bunch of different communities appropriate for a "curated" list.
