gapbetweenus, in Poll finds that fewer Gen Z boys identify as Feminists than Millenials-- and the same % as Gen X.

Feminism is also not a useful term anymore - since people have vastly different definitions.

Sumater,

It’s probably better used as a label for a collection of movements than any singular one.

gapbetweenus,

Problem is, people using this term might simply no understand each other, since they might mean quite different things.

How are you doing, you okay?

spaduf, (edited )

Oh man, I’m actually going through a whole mess of shit right now, but this was absolutely not a call for help. Was sick for months culminating in debilitating reactive arthritis and because of this missed out on some time with my grandmother during her last days. We were very close, I had lived with her for a while during my childhood. She just recently passed and it’s been tough, but I’m doing ok all things considered. Thanks for asking.

Cuttlersan,

Glad to hear you’re pulling through! Condolences; that’s pretty rough. The arthritis getting in the way definitely wasn’t your fault. Hope you can look back on those good childhood memories with her :)

imperialcoder,

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through a hard time. just know your not alone. life is rough out there for a lot of us. recently I was falsely accused of rape by someone I was dating. top that off, my mom just got admitted to the hospital this morning for some serious medical stuff. I’ve only had one friend who I haven’t seen in years checkin to see if I was ok. it’s sad to see but makes be grateful. wish you the best man! we deserve better but we do the best we can. stay strong brother

gapbetweenus, in Opinion | Why Aren’t More People Getting Married? Ask Women What Dating Is Like.

I feel like at least in Europe a lot of people see marriage as an outdated concept.

I don’t know how much I trust AEI’s motivation, methods or conclusions. The same survey also shows gen z are much less likely to go to church, less likely to drink and smoke, less likely to have a girlfriend/boyfriend…and gen x and boomers are more likely to do all of that. Is it true? Probably. But when you are asking a 19 year old and a 59 year old the same question…how do you even calculate what the answer means?

Currently Gen Z included aa young as 11. Are they polling 13 year olds? Because I definitely give zero shits what 13 year old boys think.

And are they polling teenage gen x’ers as well?

Rodeo,

shows gen z are much … less likely to drink and smoke … Currently Gen Z included aa young as 11

It’s like they think 11 year olds are heading to the bar after school.

CaptObvious,

Teenage Gen X? Do you think they have a time machine?

mysoulishome, (edited )
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Yes I’m joking because the very premise of comparing the age groups with specific questions is problematic. “Are you a feminist” doesn’t mean the same thing to someone born in 2002 as it does someone born in 1972.

If you ask me…a 40-something man, I say yes I’m a feminist because I want you to know I am an ally and support women. If you ask a 16 year old, I would doubt the word means much to them at all. But I bet they will be more supportive of women than our generation anyway.

CaptObvious,

Language changes with time, not with birth year. While someone born in 1972 certainly has much more life experience and context than someone born in 2002, the question today will mean approximately the same thing to both.

No1RivenFucker,

Not really, no. People aren’t working off some master database of language that pushes updates out universally. They’re working from their own understanding based on their own life experiences. Someone born in 1973 will have a very different socialization and bundle of personal experiences than someone born in 2002.

CaptObvious,

People aren’t working off some master database of language that pushes updates out universally.

Actually, they pretty much are. Think about it: Language would pretty much fall apart otherwise.

healthetank, in How gender disparities are affecting men

Interesting article

I especially liked that they raised point like the fact that despite the fact that men earn more on average and make up more of the top CEO/Board Members spots, that those things don’t help the bottom segment of boys who are left behind in school and left unsupported.

Their program to try and pull those teens back into post secondary is helpful and I’d be excited to see their long term impacts

didn’t know how much i needed to hear “don’t treat them as wretched because they’re men, treat them as wretched because they’re wretched”

No1RivenFucker, in When it comes to gender stuff, sometimes there aren’t simple solutions, and we have to be okay with that.

Articles like this suck. They contribute absolutely nothing to discussion by just saying “well, other people also have problems too”, without even attempting to suggest any direction where a solution is.

Anamana, (edited )

No1RivenFucker, in Poll finds that fewer Gen Z boys identify as Feminists than Millenials-- and the same % as Gen X.

I mean it makes sense. Feminism has become quite the loaded term as of recent, and young people are going to be a lot more distanced from the earlier wages of feminism.

Grimpen,

That’s what I’d assume. My impression is that many Gen-Z might associate the term “Feminism” with J.K. Rowling and such, Trans-Exclusionary feminists as it were. If there were questions that could suss out concern about trans issues, or even LGBT+ issues in general, I suspect the differences between generation might match.

No1RivenFucker,

Not even getting into substantive issues, the people who loudly proclaim their feminism online are usually total fucking jackasses since honest people see little need to hide behind the concept of “feminism”, as if it’s a shield against criticism.

Overall, a more substantive survey would just be better. Or really anything beyond “self ID with a broad and contentious label”.

Jakeroxs, in Poll finds that fewer Gen Z boys identify as Feminists than Millenials-- and the same % as Gen X.

I prefer humanist over most other “-ists” as it’s more inclusive to all races/genders.

Drinvictus, in Men In The US Are Peeing Incorrectly According To Urologist

Sitting is 10 times better. Easier to pee, no need to aim, no splash so you don’t fuck up the bathroom. But I’d use a urinal over any toilet when I’m outside because 1) it’s faster 2) I don’t want to sit down on a common toilet).

WarmSoda,

What do you mean no need to aim? I hope you’re not just letting your dick rub against the toilet bowl while you pee.

ares35,
@ares35@kbin.social avatar

hanging down all the way into the water, probably.

Thisfox,

American toilets are just weird. Why do they need to evacuate into an overful lake like that? Always seems so wasteful, putting 50 litres of water into each flush too.

DerisionConsulting,

The oval shape is so a penis doesn’t touch the seat/bowl when you sit.
On round toilets, someone with a penis might need to touch the seat with their hands the whole time they are seated.

heckypecky,

American toilets use a different mechanism, a siphon sucks the water out while in Europe we just dump water into it and hope it flushes. Water usage is the same as far as I know.

Thisfox,

Water usage per flush here in Australia is significantly lower. And yet the system is cleaner and more reliable. I had never even seen a plunger until my first US visit; We don’t need them here because our toilets work, unlike the huge American toilets which clog and require too much water.

Followupquestion,

Australia, IIRC, standardized on larger drain pipe sizes, so of course your toilets don’t clog. For some reason only some commercial buildings use the larger standard here. As for water usage, my toilet uses 1.3 gallons per flush, and they sell more expensive toilets that use much less but have a stronger pressure system. If/when this toilet breaks I’ll be getting one of those most likely.
