Son_of_dad, in Killers of the Flower Moon Wins Best Film at New York Film Critics Circle (Add'l winners in comments)

I avoided it because I’m sick of the white savior/I can’t relate to a movie unless there’s a white, male character as the lead, bullshit that Hollywood pulls. I know it’s based on a book, but I’m just sick of it, and DiCaprio, I’m sick of that guy being in everything.

caseofthematts,

Clearly you’ve avoided it if you think the film has anything to do with the white saviour trope. There’s no need to get so worked up about something you’ve made up completely.

Son_of_dad, (edited )

Whatever the movie is, the trailer sure as heck set the movie up as a tale of a white man defending the tan people. And yeah I get worked up after dealing with decades of racism and erasure of my people

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Son_of_dad I can see why you might think that it's going to be an example of that trope if you only saw the trailer; our expectations tend to colour our interpretation, but no. He's anything but.

Indigenous receptions of this film are very mixed - some positive, some negative, but in a case like this, when there are some Ossage people who consulted on it and are happy with it, I think it's better to keep an open mind instead of dismissing their view out of hand without seeing it.

@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

the fuck are you going on about? who is the “white savior” in this movie?

i just watched the trailer, and jesse plemmons isn’t even in it. he didn’t even show up in the film until near the very end.

go complain about something you actually understand instead of whining about the existence of a movie that very explicitly goes out of its way to not do the things you accuse it of doing.

I’m sick of that guy being in everything.

dicaprio has been in 5 movies over the last decade, i would hardly call that “being in everything”.

Son_of_dad,
Son_of_dad,

I guess I imagined Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead

beefcat, (edited )
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

He co-stars with Lily Gladstone, he is also one of two main villains (the other being DeNiro).

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

tell me you know nothing about the film without telling me you know nothing about the film

Son_of_dad,

Did you see it?

beefcat,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Yes

Yet another film where the focus is seeing the pain of people of color through white eyes

BestBouclettes, (edited )

The movie is literally about white people abusing the trust of the Osage, scamming and killing them for their land and money. No white saviour in that.

Son_of_dad, in FURIOSA : A MAD MAX SAGA | OFFICIAL TRAILER #1 - YouTube

Is this an actual real one and not one of the dozens of fakes on YouTube for years?

Alter_Id, (edited ) in [DISCUSSION] [SPOILERS] - Godzilla Minus One - Minami Hamabe, Sakura Ando, Ryunosuke Kamiki - Dir. by Takashi Yamazaki
@Alter_Id@kbin.social avatar

Wanting to keep my post spoiler free.

I thought it was great. I like every Godzilla movie though. Overall it was a solid entry into the franchise. Closer to the top of the heap than the bottom. Curious to see the varied reactions from the rest of the fandom, since everyone inevitably has different takes depending on what they like out of a Godzilla movie.

I encourage everyone to go see it, mostly to give Toho your money so they know the international market remains eager for more of the big G.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

I’m going today! I’m a huge Godzilla fan. Would you say it’s on par with Shin Godzilla?

Alter_Id,
@Alter_Id@kbin.social avatar

It's a high quality film. I prefer Shin, but Shin is my 2nd favorite in the franchise. Depending on taste I'm sure some people will prefer Minus One over Shin. It's all up to what you like.

Ultimately though, they did a great job on Minus One. If you're a Godzilla fan you're going to love it.

canthidium,
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Lol, I just noticed your other comment. Thanks for responding to this one as well! Good to hear!

Alter_Id,

Sure thing. Report back with your own take. Eager to get others' opinion on it too!

Just got back and I loved it. I put more thoughts in another comment.

Ab_intra, in What are you watching? (DECEMBER 2023)
@Ab_intra@lemmy.world avatar

I just watched Spirited Away. I’ve seen it many times. My sister is a big anime fan so we always used to watch Studio Ghibli movies and they are my favorite anime movies.

plactagonic, in What are you watching? (DECEMBER 2023)

It is 20 years from realese of The Return of the King.

What I will watch is not a question.

Patariki, in FURIOSA : A MAD MAX SAGA | OFFICIAL TRAILER #1 - YouTube

Oof, I hope the CGI people get some time to polish that up because that did not look good.

nostradiel,
@nostradiel@lemmy.world avatar

My thought exactly. It looks like B class movie now.

  • Typist Artist Pirate King (2023) - biopic of Audrey Amiss with a very effective portrayal of her paranoid schizophrenia.
  • The Creator (2023) - looked great but totally predictable and unoriginal.
  • A Field in England (2013) - surreal, low-key folk horror with some memorable BW cinematography.
  • Oppenheimer (2023) - powerful and great performances, but it could have been just as effective with 20 minutes cut IMHO.
  • The Miracle Club (2023) - nothing outstanding here, but a solidly told tale of forgiveness.
  • Lair of the White Worm (1988) - as messily uneven as ever. Amanda Donahue seemed to know what Loach Russell was aiming for. Not sure about anyone else.
livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Sounds like I might skip The Creator.

A Field in England is great. I really enjoyed the cinematography too.

GreyShuck,
@GreyShuck@feddit.uk avatar

The Creator is visually spectacular - don’t underestimate that - but don’t expect anything interesting from the plot.

ours,

I fully agree. I put it off and finally watched it. It is beautiful and visually interesting. They really made the best of that budget.

The story is nothing new and the tone is inconsistent at times but certainly worth a watch.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Good to know. Tthe trailer made it look pretty good but if the narrative is pedestrian then it might be a bit of an empty experience.

shrodes, (edited )

Do you mean Russell? Not Loach. I found Altered States a bit uneven but the Devils was superb

GreyShuck,
@GreyShuck@feddit.uk avatar

Yes - I do!

Oh yes, The Devils was excellent, as was Tommy - so much anger captured in that one.

shrodes,

Will have to check Tommy, been on my watchlist for a while

reboot6675, in What are you watching? (DECEMBER 2023)

La Haine (1995), amazing movie. The lives of others (2006), very good too.

GutsBerserk,

La Haine, loved it as a teenager.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I need to rewatch The Lives of Others. I have a feeling it really holds up.

cozy_agent, in What are you watching? (DECEMBER 2023)

Some Wes Anderson movies I haven’t seen, like The French Dispatch and The Royal Tenenbaums.

skybreaker, in What are you watching? (DECEMBER 2023)
@skybreaker@lemmy.world avatar

We watched the Murder on the Orient Express series, including the nee Haunting in Venice movie. I really liked them. They’re fun and keep me guessing until the end.

Teknikal, in What are you watching? (DECEMBER 2023)

I went on a run of watching the DC movies in chronological order. Mainly because I have seen the Marvel ones so many times now.

Now I’m doing same with the doom patrol series I’d never got past season 1 before now.

Lifecoach5000, in What are you watching? (DECEMBER 2023)

I watched Airplane II last night. Hadn’t seen it since I was a kid. I remember it being as funny as the first one but now not so much. Just a lot of recycled dumb jokes from the first one. Although the end scenes with William Shatner did crack me up - pretty much the only saving grace.

canthidium, in [DISCUSSION] [SPOILERS] - Godzilla Minus One - Minami Hamabe, Sakura Ando, Ryunosuke Kamiki - Dir. by Takashi Yamazaki
@canthidium@lemmy.world avatar

Loved it. Maybe even more than Shin, but I think being a veteran with PTSD let me connect to this story a lot. I couldn’t help but feel for Koichi, with how he was fighting his own war internally. Hit very close to home. When he got pushed into the alley, I just felt like “how much more survivors guilt can this guy have”. And it hit me hard when he was asked if his war was finally over.

But as far as Godzilla goes, loved his design. He was so menacing in this. Not an anti-hero, nor a “good guy”. He was a monster just destroying everything. The boat chase scene, he just looked evil. The atomic breath design was a highlight and the explosions that it made were incredible.

The cinematography was so well done, especially the 3rd act. The whole movie had very much an anime feel IMO. Lots of Attack on Titan vibes, especially with how Godzilla moved. I loved the boat captain, he felt the most like an anime character to me.

If you’re a Godzilla fan at all, you’ll enjoy it.
