Colorcodedresistor, in Commentary: We face a world potentially running out of antibiotics

  • BumbleBeeBleep,

“Running out” is a bit of a weird title here, it doesn’t mean that some deposit is running dry. There are more and more bacteria getting resistant for more and more types of antibiotics, making them no longer effective. Even a bottomless supply of antibiotics is useless if it doesn’t actually kill the things it’s supposed to kill.

I suppose the “running out” part would mean that there are only so many types of antibiotics, if none of them are effective anymore (or not enough of them are effective enough) we would be in some deep shit.

(being in deep shit may cause a severe risk of bacterial infection, I highly recommend not being in such a situation)

    HurlingDurling,

So this has been reported for years now. We aren’t running out of antibiotics. We are running out of options like you said. The real reason is that doctors would prescribe stronger antibiotics than were needed. Also, people would stop taking the full course because they felt better before then, and lastly, farms give antibiotics to their animals just in case, so any bacteria that would survive any of these is allowed to reproduce and become resistant to antibiotics.

0x815, (edited ) in Israel-Hamas War: Israeli Army Takes Journalists on Controlled Visit to Gaza Hospital

It reads strange if the Israelian military takes journalists on a “controlled” visit given the Israeli government’s sentiment towards journalists, when they NOT control them. Just a remainder here or here or here.

    memfree,

They will tell you “controlled” visits are for safety, but I remember in the post 9-11 Gulf War reporting how the Pentagon went all in for “embedded journalism”. Yeah, sure, it keeps the press ‘safe’, but it changes what gets covered. The media initially loved it, but later realized there were valid criticisms of the process.

More to the point: yeah, covering news should not be a death sentence. Even if you are covering a war, as civilian non-combatants you shouldn’t be targeted by any military… a la the ‘Collateral Murder’ wikileaks video of journalists shot by US helicopters.

SoupBrick, (edited ) in Gaza crisis: aid agencies warn of ‘tragic, avoidable surge’ in child deaths as 160 children are already being killed every day

I wonder if that is enough dead children for the US government (feat. Pro-Life Republicans) to act?

OsrsNeedsF2P, (edited ) in Israel military reportedly surrounding hospitals in Gaza and shooting at those trying to flee, UN says

Well, it’s another silly sensationalist headline… Oh a UN link…?

“There are reports that some of those who fled the hospital have been shot at, wounded, or killed. The latest reports say the hospital was surrounded by tanks”, he wrote.

“WHO is gravely concerned about the safety of health workers, hundreds of sick and injured patients, including babies on life support, and displaced people who remain inside the hospital.”

WHO again called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza “as the only way to save lives and reduce the horrific levels of suffering”, Tedros added.

    Oh God

  • Namstel,

I think what they were trying to say was that at first it looks like a click bait headline, but that the dark truth is that it’s actually directly from the UN.

    Devi,

I read an interview last week with some hospital staff. They had to avoid windows when treating patents as if seen the snipers would shoot them. Many staff were killed that way. Just a nightmare.

usually setting fire to parliament is treated a little more strongly than just “protesting”

Paragone, in Why does China claim almost the entire South China Sea?

    it is called “establishing ownership”.

Once their identity is consolidated that way,

then they can enforce their certain-in-their-own-unconscious ownership of Asia, through any violence necessary.

You can see equivalent self-dishonesty in the West, & you can see it in Modi’s delusion that Russia is going to help them against China, even through Russia is financially now a vassal-state of China…

Once the economy guts the Democrats in the US, losing them the 2024 election, & Trump guts NATO, backs Russia & Saudi Arabia,

what is going to protect Asia from China’s smashing it like they did Tibet?

7 years from Trump’s coronation ( in 2025 ) is all Asia has left, it seems.

Establishing ownership is fundamental to bullying, btw: rodents do it, sneaking into places at night, so that they feel righteous when fighting for “their” new territory during the day…

    I hadn’t understood that bullying had both a yin/molesting/violating phase & a yang/overt-bullying phase until rodents taught me how it’s done…

The governments who push privacy-violating laws & systems, then later stomp civil-rights, they are demonstrating exactly the same Pattern.

The religions who push for “some” control of everybody’s life, relentlessly pushing for “a little more” authority, then once a tipping-point is crossed, suddenly they can switch from yin-bullying to yang-bullying … same thing.

It’s a really common pattern throughout human history, lately…

Come on guys, we can do this

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biochar_carbon_removal

    Chinzon,

There’s a lot we can do in labs, the snag is often when you try to bring it to scale. Regardless, doing this is like trying to clean your lungs while still smoking

    cosmic_skillet,

Yeah it’s a huge effort to do large scale biochar production. The dream is to take all those waste stems they’re burning and sequester the carbon in the soil. This will improve soil quality and improve air quality by stopping the burning, but it will cost big bucks.

He doesn’t give a shit about the hostages, he wants to expel Palestinians from north Gaza, if not all of it. He will bomb all the tunnels where they’re being held, then blame Hamas for “putting them in the way of the bombs”.

    tesseract,

No. He will never reveal that he bombed them. He will simply say that the Palestinians did it.

    tangentism,

And when evidence later emerges that they were killed by the Israeli military (for example)… theyll just shrug their shoulders
