9tr6gyp3, in FOSS Miracast/WiDi receiver for Android TV?

Looks like Miracast and Wi-Fi Direct aren’t just some software you can tack onto a product. It’s a certification for a product that has proper software and hardware support to handle these tasks.

You can find some implementations of Android TV devices that have Miracast capabilities, such as the Nvidia Shield. Other than that, youll have to find another device that is certified for it.

I see. I thought all it would need would be a Wifi Antenna, seeing as almost any phone or laptop can act as a Miracast sender, but it seems it’s more complicated from the receiver side. Then that means that all the proprietary apps either don’t work and outright lie that they “act as miracast receivers”, or they implement their own protocols?

9tr6gyp3,

Do you have an example of an app that lets a device with no Miracast capabilities act as a receiver? Im curious if its possible.

Imonobor,
@Imonobor@lemmy.world avatar

No, I haven’t found such an app yet, all those that claim to do so fail on my device, so I guess they really require something more hardware-side. There are some that work with their own proprietary apps, but I guess they have their own protocols and the performance is not great anyway.

rufus, in FOSS Miracast/WiDi receiver for Android TV?

Is there even a sender? All Android devices in my house don’t include Miracast anymore.

jjlinux, in Looking for Notes App for Android & Linux

You can, in theory, use the notes on ProtonPass. I use Joplin, and regardless of the fact that the UI could be more user Fri, I believe it is currently the best FLOSS option out there.

RatzChatsubo, in Looking for Notes App for Android & Linux

So I use the evil Google notes app. Is there a better alternative?

I use TiddlyWiki via TiddlyPWA. It’s an offline-capable PWA with builtin sync and encryption. It doesn’t have folders but it does have nestable tags. I don’t think it supports markdown out of the box, but I’m positive you can find a plugin to use markdown. Plugins are crazy easy to install in TiddlyWiki; you just drag and drop the plugin into your wiki window and confirm the installation.

TiddlyWiki via TiddlyPWA is what I use. I don’t know if it supports the S Pen and the notes are all saved in a single HTML file.

sugartits,

the notes are all saved in a single HTML file.

Oh dear God no…

corsicanguppy,

Yeah. It gets massive.

Zerush, (edited ) in Could we add alternativeto.net to the sidebar?
@Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

It would be very desirable. AlternativeTo is perhaps the best and most complete service to find Software and services, for any OS and license. It shouldn’t be missing from anyone’s bookmarks, even so, a shortcut in Lemmy wouldn’t be bad. Community driven, most with user reviews and ratings, warnings if a soft or service is discontinued, with Malware or Bundleware, all links to the corresponding Homepages for use or download.

You can have a look at Obsidian with the Excalidraw plugin

dessalines,

I really wish obsidian was open source.

And also not built with electron… 😣

robsuto, in Searching for a Samsung Notes replacement

Saber doesn’t have S-pen support but you can save notes where you want (can even sync to Nextcloud).

I’ve been looking for this solution as well.

turing_spider574,

I have a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and the S-pen works fine

robsuto,

The S-pen “works” with it but the button on the pen doesn’t work with the app. Hence it’s not ‘supported.’

You can’t hold the button for erase.

brokenlcd, in Searching for a Samsung Notes replacement

I think saber might be an option; can’t test it personally since i dont’ have a samsung.

lemmy.ml/post/511377

My Linux/Windows guide has two whole sections and a table dedicated to this, with some websites listed for finding software and alternatives. They are all choices handpicked and refined from personal experience of over 15ish years.

Edit: its possible some may miss rest of the post that is in the form of chained comment. Just scroll and act like comments are one post. I do have it labelled it like Twitter (1/n) format for coherence.

calculuschild, (edited )

I am really dumb. The link you shared doesn’t show any table like you describe, and no links to the other “parts” out of 13. Can you help me figure this out? The part I can see is pretty helpful!

TheAnonymouseJoker,
@TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

You are not dumb. I think your client app for Lemmy is not showing table properly. In Jerboa and Eternity, I can see table properly, and I think I now understand the mistake that is happening. Lemmy has a word limit for posts, and so, I created rest of the post in the form of chained comment below.

You probably missed the post, and this has been a bit of a bugger compared to Reddit’s 40000 character limit, but it also keeps the storage needs lower for instance hosters.

Scroll down, I think your client is fine.

Let’s create awesome open source Or awesome alternatives

It’s really weird that there’s no one already made it

FINALLY what I have been waiting for. This is an amazing project. If the developer sees this, keep up the good work
