Restic and Proxmox Backup Client for me.

Proxmox backup client goes to my local proxmox backup server, Restic goes to remote S3 storage on Backblaze.

mmhmm, in Thoughts/Experience with OpenSUSE Micro-OS?

I used aeon on my most recent build and can’t wait to use it again.

Micro os is best when doing one thing. I’m using aeon to run containers.

I was drawn to microOS because I am a shit sys admin. MicroOS updates nightly, snapshots itself and now that I have my core services set I don’t need to touch it. What is not to enjoy about that?

Discover5164, in entire system backups onto the server - how?

you could use btrfs snapshots of the volumes you want to preserve. then send the snapshot to a remote location.

if the ssd fries you just need to download the snapshots and restore their layout.

i have a script for it and i use it on my server: github.com/simone-viozzi/btrfs2cloud-backup

rimu, in What's wrong with using cloudflared?

Cloudflare has been controversial for dragging their feet when it was time to stop providing protection to nazi websites like The Daily Stormer, 8chan and Kiwi Farms. Also the Taliban, ISIS and so on More about this.

For this reason, a lot of fediverse servers do not use CloudFlare.

Like I do any other system. rsnapshot nightly to backup server.

REAR Relax-and-Recover will do entire system point-in-time snapshot backups to a bootable iso or physical USB thumb drive: relax-and-recover.org/rear-user-guide/index.html

I use rear for backing up my root, and Borg for packing up user data (for versioning, file recovery), but you can use rear for the entire system too.

I’d recommend giving the ASUS Merlin firmware a try if you feel up to it. It might work out better than stock firmware if that’s what you’re running.

Maybe btrfs with RAID 1?

taladar, in entire system backups onto the server - how?

I think Borg Backup would fit your needs. You would still need to reinstall things like a boot sector and recreated partitions but on the other hand file based backups have the advantage that you can restore individual files when needed too and that it is easier to only backup what changed. Just make sure to exclude any temporary files you don’t want to keep from the backup (e.g. cache dirs, log files that get rewritten often and aren’t relevant long-term,…).

One of the few newsletters I read and actually engage with.
Such a gem.

eluvatar, in Why docker

About the trust issue. There’s no more or less trust than running on bare metal. Sure you could compile everything from source but you probably won’t, and you might trust your distro package manager, but that still has a similar problem.

guyinachair, (edited ) in I want to set up plex server, no windows.. any simple options?

Have you considered truenas scale? It’s debian based and there’s an official app for Plex. Not to mention a plethora of guides to get scale and Plex up and running.

Check out Nixos, this is like the next step of docker

Ah, and a side note: docker is not fully open source

tvcvt, in Best Way To Mount A Directory on Boot

It sounds like you’ve got your solution already, but just in case someone stumbles on this later, I thought I’d mention autofs.

I’m coming to prefer it over fstab entries because it handles disconnections nicely and attempts to reconnect. Worth checking out for those who haven’t played with it.

Bogusmcfakester, (edited ) in I want to set up plex server, no windows.. any simple options?

I’m in a very similar situation, too many windows services running in the background. Casaos is supposed to be a user friendly way to set up a bunch of docker containers on linux for Plex and the arrs amongst other things. I can’t speak for how easy it is as it’s something I’m going to be exploring in the coming weeks.
