Number two or four.

Really disappointed in lack of laser beams coming from the bird eyes.

The current flag is ahhh, pretty bad. Like its just awful looking, and the native american racism too.

WaterSword, in The Bantustans of apartheid South Africa and their flags. These "countries" were created as homelands for various black ethnic groups, with the goal to isolate blacks from South Africa proper.

is that horse for QwaQwa the same one as on the Ferrari logo?

gullible, in State flags of the imaginary Union of Socialist Council Republics of America

So, so many words on these flags. Somewhere out there, CGPgrey is actively sobbing. I adore Montana and Oregon, though.

cantstopthesignal, in Today marks 17 years without the old flag of Lesotho. I still kind of miss it, and finds the new one much more boring and bland. It was also (arguably) the only national flag using brown, besides CoA

Oh look Patrick, you’ve been skewered. Heeheeheehee

mihnt, in Today, October 18, is Alaska day, commemorating the transfer of Alaska from Russia to USA. This is the Alaskan state flag, voted the fifth best state/province flag in Canada and USA in 2001.

  • root_beer,

I’d guess Ohio is there if only for the merit that it isn’t a rectangular bedsheet like its neighbors, and New Mexico because it is genuinely rad as hell.

elliot_crane, in Flag map of Japanese prefectures. What do you think of the flags, unique and aesthetically pleasing designs, or glorified logos on single color backgrounds?

I think they all look pretty cool and have their own distinctive aesthetic while being thematically consistent (e.g. they look like they’re part of the same collection). That being said, I do definitely get “logo” vibes from quite a few, like you could have told me they were sports team logos and I’d believe it. Also Akita straight up looks like a Nike swoosh lol.

    thedirtyknapkin,

i love many of these, but a family crest on a field of color isn’t necessarily the most creative design, but i really like the consistency and history behind some is these. like some of these were flown during the warring states period. that alone makes them kinda cool.

that said, ishikawa looks like a b2b tech company logo.

Rentlar, in Flag map of Japanese prefectures. What do you think of the flags, unique and aesthetically pleasing designs, or glorified logos on single color backgrounds?

Neat how a few of them are off centre (Nagano, Mie, Fukushima for example). Some appear to derive their symbols from Japanese family crest symbols. And the prefectures with “Yama” all have some sort of mountain range triangular symbolism.

…on the other hand my brain is in the wrong place when I look at the Kanagawa flag.

    root_beer,

Just think of it as a bird’s eye view of Sgt. Chowdown enjoying his favorite lunch, except he got rid of the mustache

root_beer, in Flag map of Japanese prefectures. What do you think of the flags, unique and aesthetically pleasing designs, or glorified logos on single color backgrounds?

I don’t even really like flag maps because they ultimately look chaotic, but as all these flags are consistent and simple, this one looks pretty good. I like the flags, while there is a sense of unity, they are all individual as well. I get where people might complain that they look like logos, but they look very modern.

    ChaoticNeutralCzech,

Too bad no shade of blue is left for the sea (even white clashes somewhat)

The Hokkaido flag is my personal favorite. The Nagano flag, meanwhile, looks like the forgettable logo from an off-brand energy drink.

I couldn’t agree more. Over the whole set it has these qualities, some bangers, some logos for non-existent companies.

Tokushima looks like a logistics company.

akhenaten0, in Spider-Man 2 devs mixed up the Puerto Rican flag with the Cuban one

Could be worse; could be Catalonian independence

megane_kun, in Today (October 24) Zambia celebrates its independence day and the adoption of its national flag. The flag is notable for the uncommon choice of having the emblem on the flyside.

Is there any reason, like symbolic significance, behind putting the emblem and the stripes on the fly rather than on the hoist?

I‌ am assuming that one reason a lot of flags put their devices on the hoist (or on the center) is visibility, especially when the flag waves around. Wouldn’t the devices on the Zambian flag be less visible then as they’re placed on the fly?

    GlitchyDigiBun,
    @GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It definitely struck me that the emblem chosen in this manner is a bird, meant to represent an oppressed colonial territory now freed. Maybe they chose it so that the animal reprisenting Zambian freedom is far removed from the yolk of its origin? Or maybe someone just didn’t tell them it was the norm or why 🤷‍♂️

    megane_kun,

I’ve momentarily thought “Oh, because birds fly, right?!” but it’d be too crazy if that’s the actual reason.

Seriously speaking though, it could be for all the reasons you’ve listed: breaking conventions/norms to represent their freedom (reinforced by the bird). Idk if it’s worth it given that the symbols would be harder to see tho.

Hazrod, in Today is the anniversary of the independence of Turkmenistan in 1991. Soon after, a new flag was adopted. With its carpet patterns, Turkmenistan possibly has the world's most complex national flag

🇹🇲 the flag emoji is also quite complex, I would have thought they’d simply it, although it’s so small I can’t see where the difference are on my phone.

    DScratch,

The whole place is run by spiders.

kersploosh, in Which tricolor flag do you think is the ugliest, considering only the color combination? Here are some candidates that I have found.
