msmc101, in Commission selects a final concept for the redesigned Minnesota state flag

that is a solid flag

As you can probably guess from the image I gave this post, my favorite is the flag of Bhutan. The yellow & orange create a distinctive & satisfying background, and the dragon in the center makes for a strong focal point that doesn't clash with the background due to its simple color palette.

A close second would probably be the flag of South Africa. The pattern and colors here are just really nice, dunno what else to say.

@ThatOneKirbyMain2568@kbin.social avatar

Since I'm that one guy who doesn't like Maryland's flag, I tried to give it a redo when I was redesigning all of the US state flags. I took the Crossland and Baltimore banners and simplified them to make an (imo) better looking flag that alludes to the designs. There's even some extra symbolism in there: there are seven stripes since Maryland was the 7th state to ratify the Constitution and join the US.

nocturne213,

Having lived in Maryland, but not being from Maryland, I learned the only thing Old Liners love more than Old Bay is their flag.

FireTower, in What are your thoughts on complexity in flag designs?
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

Like with engineering, the fewer components the better. Of course each flag still needs to effectively relay it’s message.

I think Canada has a great example flag. It’s only used two colors, stripes, and one unique shape.

Also something to factor in is how unique is your flag. The Ivory Coast will forever be mistaken for Ireland. Both are simple but added detail could have avoided this.

Nevrome, in What are your thoughts on complexity in flag designs?
@Nevrome@lemmy.ca avatar

I think judging a flag’s clutteredness depends on the visual feeling rather than the amount of stuff found in it.

For example, the flag of my Canadian Province, New-Brunswick, doesn’t feel cluttered to me as opposed to the flag of the Seychelles. It does fit in your second bullet point though.

I tend to agree with you that simpler designs look great but many complex flags’ designs also do the job.

ThatOneKirbyMain2568,
@ThatOneKirbyMain2568@kbin.social avatar

It's definitely subjective. Case in point, I think the Seychelles' flag is great where as New Brunswick's is quite messy if still decent. The latter is helped by not going overboard on colors, though I think it'd be more cohesive if the ship followed the pattern that the lion and the water followed (single-colored design on single-colored background). The lion is yellow on red and the water is white on blue, but the ship is all over the place with red flags and a white, outlined sail.

ThatOneKirbyMain2568, in Some U.S. territorial flag remakes
@ThatOneKirbyMain2568@kbin.social avatar

After I finished all of my U.S. state flag redesigns, I decided to take a stab at designing new flags for the territories! Here's the symbolism:

American Samoa

  • The triangular pattern is taken from the existing flag, just flipped to be more prominent when waving.
  • The red, white, and blue symbolize American Samoa's link to the United States.
  • The color arrangement—a field of red with a blue shape on the left and white symbols within the blue—is similar to that of the Samoan flag.
  • The war club and fly-whisk are symbols of Samoan leaders.

Guam

  • The blue field stands for the vast ocean surrounding Guam.
  • The red symbolizes the violent history of the island.
  • The two shapes are meant to resemble a slingstone and a sinahi necklace, both Chamorro symbols.
  • Yellow is used to represent the hope of a prosperous future and so that the center of the flag resembles islands in the sea.

Northern Mariana Islands

  • The blue once again represents the ocean.
  • The white slopes on the sides of the flag evoke the Mariana Trench, which lies near the Mariana Islands.
  • The latte stone in the center of the flag is a Chamorro symbol.
  • There are 14 stars for the 14 islands in the territory. The red and pink resemble that of the original flag's wreath, a symbol of the Carolinians.

Puerto Rico

  • The white stripes are now yellow to better symbolize Puerto Rico's Spanish history.
  • The rest of the symbolism is the same.

U.S. Virgin Islands

  • 'Murican colors represent 'Murica.
  • The Nordic cross alludes to the islands' former status as a Danish colony.
  • There are 3 stars for the 3 main islands in the territory.

Here is the tier list:

spoiler___ https://programming.dev/pictrs/image/99dae610-c998-46d1-bc60-31d5cceff2aa.pngI don’t understand his A tier flags, they’re over detailed. Is it meant as a joke?

bionicjoey, (edited )

I think in both cases for the A tier flags he is giving them points for having the Maryland factor.

That being said, I’m amazed NL’s flag doesn’t score higher. It is probably tied for my favourite with Quebec’s and I’m neither Newfie nor Quebecois.

Also a bit disappointed that he didn’t mention some of the other famous unofficial flags like,

Ontarian Francophones,

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5d/Franco-Ontarian_flag.svg

The Acadian flag,

The Mi’kmaq flag,

Or the Iroquois Flag,

Canada has many awesome flags, but a lot of them aren’t provincial

He seems to really like "Maryland-style" flags, which just have a ton going on all over the place. I don't really like those kinds of flags, though honestly New Brunswick's isn't that bad. The top and bottom strips each stick to a solid color on a solid background (yellow on red for the top and white on blue for the bottom). I'm not a huge fan of the middle strip with the ship — I think it would be better if it stuck to solid color on solid color like the top and bottom — but it doesn't use that many colors and goes well with the water.

TropicalDingdong, in 🎄 Grey Grades Canada's Flags! (And Merry Xmas!) 🎄

It’s funny to.me that CGP grey is still a thing. I remember on his podcast (a looong time ago) talking about getting into productivity software. Iirc it went on to take him almost years before getting out any new content

He went from being under produced and fun, to over produced untimely, and kind of unbearable.

_danny, (edited )

Wow I don’t remember this at all, honestly I don’t remember him having a gap longer than 8 months between video releases. Are you sure it was him?

His recent (ish) stuff is amazing imo. SHARKS! and the Tiffany companion video are my two favorites by far.

TropicalDingdong,

We’re different generations of CGP grey enjoyers,almost assuredly. I mean I was fan club level fan for a while (like patron, bought the swag, etc).

But success and becoming “pro” really ruined it . Yeah 8 months. That’s ridiculous for a gap. And it was longer and longer between videos for lower quality stuff. His transition to me was reflective of when YouTube stopped being a place for amateurs to share their amateur thing, and became a place where people were trying to “make it”. CPGs journey is like, that exact arc, and it ruined it. I think his AI video, the first he had that COMPLETELY blew up for him, it changed how he thought about his content and videos. He out in a lot more effoet, slowed the pace of the videos and of production, and it want from casual and delightful to produced and pedantic.

That change occured in like, 2014-15 so it’s fair if you like Grey for what it is now, but not for me.

_danny,

I was also a fan back in those days too, I didn’t start listening to cortex or subscribe to Patreon until 2020ish, but I’ve been subscribed at least since the AI video, probably since “humans need not apply”. I won’t deny that his content flavor has changed, but he has adapted to the new YouTube dynamic pretty well.

TropicalDingdong,

Right. Humans need not apply is around (soon after) when i stopped watching.

UraniumBlazer, in What's your favorite national flag?

Probably not that unique, but mine is the Canadian flag. The red and white with the maple leaf is just so pleasant to look at! Also, due to the simple two color design, they have implemented it beautifully in their governmental branding and stuff. Simply gorgeous!
