Is there any reason, like symbolic significance, behind putting the emblem and the stripes on the fly rather than on the hoist?
I am assuming that one reason a lot of flags put their devices on the hoist (or on the center) is visibility, especially when the flag waves around. Wouldn’t the devices on the Zambian flag be less visible then as they’re placed on the fly?
It definitely struck me that the emblem chosen in this manner is a bird, meant to represent an oppressed colonial territory now freed. Maybe they chose it so that the animal reprisenting Zambian freedom is far removed from the yolk of its origin? Or maybe someone just didn’t tell them it was the norm or why 🤷♂️
I’ve momentarily thought “Oh, because birds fly, right?!” but it’d be too crazy if that’s the actual reason.
Seriously speaking though, it could be for all the reasons you’ve listed: breaking conventions/norms to represent their freedom (reinforced by the bird). Idk if it’s worth it given that the symbols would be harder to see tho.
The video itself is really good. I didn’t agree with everything he said (the Triple Union, while not good, is still just so obviously way better than putting the Aboriginal flag in the canton), but certainly with most of it. The Great Southern Flag is a noble effort, but it just feels too…fidgety…to me. Too much going on. Too many small pieces. The use of 5 separate colours, the very small kangaroo, 3 different kinds of stars (5-pointed Epsilon star, four 8-pointed main Southern Cross stars, and the 7-pointed Federation Star), and the solid cross connecting the stars.
Honestly, I genuinely like the Golden Wattle. I like that it keeps the Federation Star within the negative space. I think wattles are a great symbol that we should reach for more often.
The video briefly touched on the shades of colours (in the blue of the Unity Flag), but didn’t touch on what I think makes them a significant design feature for Australian flags to play with. If you do a tour of Parliament House, there’s a good chance the tour guide will explain why the two chambers are the colours they are. Red for the Senate, after the UK’s House of Lords, and green for the House of Representatives/Commons. But unlike the very vibrant shades Westminster uses, Australia’s colours are chosen to suggest natural earthy tones of the outback. The green of a eucalyptus, and the ochre red of the dirt. I don’t know if that’s a design choice our flag should copy or not. But it’s worth thinking about.
Yes that is probably the most similar of all (real) US variant flags. Compared to Cowpens: less stripes, upright stars, one more star in the circle (14 vs 13 total), and the center star being larger than the rest.
Though perhaps the most similar other flag is the one used by Ulysses in Lonesome Road.
This is cool. I'm no vexillologist, but the current Maryland flag looks like someone just clicked "Random All" on a Flag Generator and said, "That's it! Perfect! No changes!"
Nah, give me the real flag back. If this was replacing one of the “state seal on blue” flags, it’d be great. If this was a brand new flag, this would be great. But this doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing. Our Maryland flag is just awesome, and I don’t want to give it up.
Maybe make the green a bit darker. I get that you're going for grass and a river, but that's conveyed with any green, and I think a dark green would go a lot better with the lighter blue.
As another commenter mentioned, the river would be better as a simple diagonal stripe. You don't need a complicated river shape to convey a river.
This may be limited by your drawing skill, but I think the emblem should be more complex. Right now, it's in this area where it's not simple enough (i.e., it's not just a flat, one-color shield) to match with the rest of the flag but it's not complex enough to really feel like an emblem. It stands out but doesn't quite have the complexity to warrant it, if that makes any sense.
The emblem might be better off in the middle, left, or upper left. Symbols on flags tend to go there instead of on the right, where it'll be flapping in the wind more.
Updated it a little😁https://lemmy.zip/pictrs/image/29f2cc6b-85d5-4444-be1c-df2cea45afcd.webpThe grass is more dark, I simplified the river, didnt made it a strip because I want it to convey an island. I moved the emblem to the left, someone else said to make it more simple, but I dont have ideas
The new green and the emblem on the left are definitely improvements. While I get wanting to convey an island, I think you could still do that with a more geometric shape. Maybe a stripe that splits into a circle or diamond in the middle. If you're going to have a line going diagonally across the flag, I think it's best to have it be simple and geometric.
It translates as The Star of The North, or The North Star, in reference to the position of Minnesota as the northern-most contiguous US State, because of the small bit that sticks up higher than the 48th Parallel (aka The Northwest Angle).
