When I was doing my applied math PhD, the vast majority of people in my discipline used either “machine learning”, “statistical learning”, “deep learning”, but almost never “AI” (at least not in a paper or a conference). Once I finished my PhD and took on my first quant job at a bank, management insisted that I should use the word AI more in my communications. I make a neural network that simply interpolates between prices? That’s AI.

The point is that top management and shareholders don’t want the accurate terminology, they want to hear that you’re implementing AI and that the company is investing in it, because that’s what pumps the company’s stock as long as we’re in the current AI bubble.

I already got functional laptops (an Alienware M15 r3 and a very recent HP Pavilion) but none of them come close to my Thinkpad T480 in terms of comfort of use, the overall build quality and the damn awesome keyboard.

Too bad that all (?) recent Thinkpads now have soldered RAM.

I tried a few years ago to be smarter about it and instead of bookmarking I’d schedule-send myself an email with the link to the article to force myself to read it when I have time. It worked for a while until it didn’t and my email box is now littered with hundreds of “[MUST READ]” unread emails 👀

I finally nuked windows

I have been daily driving a dual booted laptop for the past two years. After a year of distro hopping I settled with fedora + kde and never looked back. I really liked the auto nvidia driver config and it made everything so pleasant to work. Since the last 8 or 9 months I decided to do gaming using bottles and proton ge. I...

For anyone wondering what Proton GE is, it’s Proton on steroids: github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom

For instance, even if you have an old Intel integrated GPU, chances are you can still benefit from AMD’s FSR just by pushing a few flags to Proton GE, even if the game doesn’t officially support it, and you’ll literally get a free FPS boost (tested it for fun and can confirm on an Intel UHD Graphics 620).

Congrats! Your laptop will be even happier with a lighter but still nice-looking desktop environment like Xfce and you even have an Ubuntu flavor around it: Xubuntu.

ROCm is that its very unstable

That’s true, but ROCm does get better very quickly. Before last summer it was impossible for me to compile and run HIP code on my laptop, and then after one magic update everything worked. I can’t speak for rendering as that’s not my field, but I’ve done plenty of computational code with HIP and the performance was really good.

But my point was more about coding in HIP, not really about using stuff other people made with HIP. If you write your code with HIP in mind from the start, the results are usually good and you get good intuition about the hardware differences (warps for instance are of size 32 on NVidia but can be 32 or 64 on AMD and that makes a difference if your code makes use of warp intrinsics). If however you just use AMD’s CUDA-to-HIP porting tool, then yeah chances are things won’t work on the first run and you need to refine by hand, starting with all the implicit assumptions you made about how the NVidia hardware works.

“With the new Desktop Cube, you can switch between workspaces in 3D. Your app windows float off the desktop surface with a parallax effect, so you can see behind them,” said the Zorin OS team. “There’s also the new Spatial Window Switcher, which replaces the standard flat Alt+Tab and Super+Tab dialog with a 3D window switcher.”

I was learning C/C++ back then and although the nostalgia is strong with this one, Turbo C++ was obviously shit (and Borland quickly killed it later anyway), and while looking around for alternatives I found DJGPP which introduced me to the GNU toolchain and so the jump to Linux to have all of that natively instead of running on DOS was very natural. My very first distro was Redhat Linux 6.2 that I got as a free CD along with a magazine (also got a Corel Linux CD the same way that I was excited about given how their WordPerfect was all the rage back then but I was never able to install it, I don’t remember what the issue was) and it looked like this (screenshot from everythinglinux.org/redhat62/index.html ):

Xournal++ also works well if you want to annotate PDFs. You can’t edit text that’s already there, but you can hide text with white rectangles and then write on top of them.

When it’s 50% more than the historical yearly average return of the S&P 500, you’re right to be concerned.

I don’t know. I am a salary man. I know nothing about business and investment.

I’ll join the “don’t” crowd then but will also suggest that you should urgently get some financial literacy to avoid “scams” like these. If you really want to invest money into something, your best bet would be an index fund or an ETF tracking an index like the S&P 500 which historically returned on average (very important to highlight the “on average”, because not only does it mean that it can be less but it also means it should be a long-term investment for the law of large numbers to be in your favor, not mentioning that holding for long periods has tax advantages depending on where you live) 10.15% per year since 1957: investopedia.com/…/what-average-annual-return-sp-…

Avoid stock picking, options, cryptos etc… (unless you really, really know what you’re doing) and instead trust when people like Warren Buffett tell you to look at index funds or index ETFs instead and to let compounding do its magic over the years: cnbc.com/…/billionaire-warren-buffett-swears-by-t…

I’d suggest you buy a book like “The Psychology of Money” by Morgan Housel (very good one) and to read it before you make any investment decisions.

but that’s because a lot of the news is “Isreal claims this” and “An IDF statement that” the sources themselves are biased

It’s also important to keep in mind that when you read “Gaza health ministry claims”, in reality it’s the same as “Hamas’ health ministry claims” since Hamas has been ruling that area since 2006 and tortured the Palestinian opposition ever since (amnesty.org/…/gaza-palestinians-tortured-summaril… ). Same thing with claims by Al Jazeera since Qatar hosts Hamas’ leadership and funds their lavish lifestyles there so it wouldn’t be right for them to suggest in their own newspaper that they’re hosting terrorists, thus their news will rarely be critical of Hamas.

What’s the solution? There are a few choices you could make. You could cherrypick pro-Palestinian sources like Al Jazeera, Middle East Eye or Electronic Intifada and automatically dismiss whatever Israel says as disinformation and it could make you feel good about yourself as it’s very easy to oversimplify the conflict as just one big high-tech state abusing poor people fighting back with stones. You could also do the same cherrypicking for a pro-Israel position. Or you could dismiss any pro-Palestinian or pro-Israel source and only listen to news sources that provide a “balanced” account of the events (Associated Press is indeed very good). Or, much better but will require more thinking on your part: you read all of them and you dismiss none of them.

Given how Iran actively funds the rockets that are being launched from residential rooftops in Gaza, and how Qatar is casually financing the lavish lifestyles of the Hamas leaders living in Qatar (enjoying paradise on earth while they convince their jihadists of committing terror in the hopes of entering paradise after death), I don’t think it would be a problem for them to also spare some money for the reconstruction, right?

Iran’s oil revenue should be seized and their money in foreign banks should be frozen until we arrive at the reconstruction process, assuming the war even ends, so that the frozen assets pay for that, both for Gaza and Israel.

Being downvoted to oblivion simply for stating what Hamas themselves are bragging about, they’re the ones boasting them being able to turn water pipes into rockets and construction materials into bombs. But of course anyone supporting Hamas will never tell you openly that they do so, so those internet warriors express their support for the terrorists instead “anonymously” with downvotes.
