AtariDump,

You’re not fighting E. Honda, you’re fighting A Honda.

Journey To Get My Homelab Onto The Internet (codeghetti.tiiny.site)

Following on from this discussion: reddthat.com/post/6044040I finally updated my VPS setup - deleted everything and started fresh with a whole new approach. I decided to make a full writeup for anyone that might find it useful or at least mildly interesting. I’m not an expert in any of the concepts that I wrote about so...

AtariDump,

I don’t want to have to remember to toggle wireguard/tailscale whenever go out or come home.

WG can do this automatically when you leave a specific pre specified WiFi network.

AtariDump,

It must have been while he was kissing you.

pooling media libraries - like distributed storage

I run a full media server, as well do a few friends. Now we had the idea to share our media libraries. In a first quick attempt we, mounted each other’s library folder via an smb share and imported those in jellyfin (all servers connected by VPN) Works quite well, but is kind of cumbersome the more people get in. I had the...

Does Plex work for you? Keep using it.

Jellyfin is nice but has a long way to go to replicate the features of Plex [like PlexAmp and Sonic Analysis] and features that are “Plex adjacent” [like Tautulli].

AtariDump, (edited )

Does Jellyfin have:

A dedicated music app?
Music filtering/smart playlists? Sonic analysis?
Good 4k/x265 performance?
Has a third party (or built in) utility that shows me streaming usage per person?
Allows me to limit remote users to streaming from a single IP address at a time?
Let’s me watch something together with another remote user?
Has an app for most any device (like Plex or Emby) that does NOT require sideloading?
Has built in native DVR steaming/recording support?
Two factor authentication?

When it does, I’ll switch.

Self-hosted VPN that can be accessed via browser extension

Currently I set up Tailscale in my Synology NAS and I can access selfhosted services on my phone using the Android app. I want to use some services in my work PC too but I’m blocked from installing any software. So my question is, is there any solution that allows me to connect to selfhosted VPN via browser extension? (Just...

AtariDump, (edited )

I’d be very wary about trying to bypass any workplace restrictions (which includes using a non-company VPN etc. etc.) to access self-hosted services.

Remember, your work computer belongs to the business (unless you’re self employed).

Depending on your line of work this could range from a slap on the wrist onto immediate termination and fines.

If the VPS allows email ports to be open.

Then deal with your email going to spam most of the time because you’re domain/IP is so new and not “warmed up” that email systems think it’s all spam.

AtariDump,

Too many people get malware that setup an email server and start sending out spam/phishing emails.

AtariDump,

Yes.

ISPs block email ports on residential connections to prevent this.

AtariDump,

Not for the average person who pays for a home (vs business) internet connection.

AtariDump,

Why?

I can count on no hands the amount of people I know who want to host their own email server on a residential connection (and that includes myself).

AtariDump,
AtariDump,

Makes sense.
