BlanK0,

I would first approach this problem by first trying to convert as many apps that you have into a Foss alternative ( you could use this site to find the alternatives: alternativeto.net).

Then if I was comfortable enough I would later on try flashing a custom rom like lineageOS (I would recommend doing this with a second phone if you have one, like a older phone to get used to the OS since it is a bit different and if something happens you have the original phone as a backup).

Then I guess the final step would be to isolate your work apps that aren’t Foss like WhatsApp into a separate environment with an app like shelter.

Edit: Also try to not rely on google services as much as possible by using alternatives like protonmail/tutamail for email and other search engines like startpage, duckduckgo and searX (or searXNG, I do prefer more this one) (searX/XNG instances being the best search engines out there)

BlanK0,

Welcome aboard! 🐧

If you decide later to test other distros I would highly recommend using a virtual machine in virtualbox. Saves the hassle when it comes to testing distros 👍

BlanK0,

Thx, I will check out Guix. Seems a very interesting distro 🔥

I finally nuked windows

I have been daily driving a dual booted laptop for the past two years. After a year of distro hopping I settled with fedora + kde and never looked back. I really liked the auto nvidia driver config and it made everything so pleasant to work. Since the last 8 or 9 months I decided to do gaming using bottles and proton ge. I...

Congrats! Hope you keep having a great experience with linux 😁🐧

Like others suggested, lemmy communities and some news sites like HackerNews.

But also some YouTube channels like Mental Outlaw, The Linux experiment and Brodie Robertson (most of them also have Odysee channels if you don’t want to use YouTube). Also Luke Smith (actually he shills a lot of foss software).

BlanK0,

Windows virtual machine as a backup if needed 👍

BlanK0,

uBlock origin helps mitigate that but it should be a standard to not get bombarded by this pop-up

BlanK0,

Very insightful article. Good to know more about Linux’s history 🍵

BlanK0,

Relatable to a spiritual level 😌👌

BlanK0,

Congrats bro! Sadly, the nvidia drivers are proprietary but eventually it might not need to be with the progress we are seeing on NVK. Almost 100 percent libre system poggers 😳

BlanK0,

Ah yes, what if several people fork the project? How are they going to send everyone to court? 😂

BlanK0,

The oil memes don’t stop coming 😂😂😂😂

BlanK0,

Maybe debian or fedora, something that isn’t too advanced

BlanK0,

You can install them like any other package from dnf/apt and then run them with startX (if its X11) or start them via their name if they are Wayland compositors (all this in the tty, the black screen with just letter outputs)

I'm so frustrated rn.

I have been distro hopping for about 2 weeks now, there’s always something that doesn’t work. I thought I would stick with Debian and now I haven’t been able to make my printer work in it, I think I tried in another distro and it just worked out of the box, but there’s always something that’s broken in every distro....

BlanK0,

Linux mint I would say its the one that tends to have better support in a large amount of hardware and it was the first one that I was able to stick with

BlanK0,

And I think Lemmy is also an example of ancom due to the fediverse and the self-hosting aspect 🤔

Nice, lets keep the moment going. Another great year for Linux and open source.

BlanK0,

Getting rid of WhatsApp is the most challenging part for sure, specially because people at work choose to use this platform. Funny enough, signal is basically the same as WhatsApp and easily accessible on the play store but people refuse to use since they are accustomed to WhatsApp and because the illiteracy on these kind of technologies.
