They can make that joke because they’re the ones making it and they control the usage/boundaries. Just like how my queer family member will sometimes go “dude that was super gay of you” but if someone said that to him that wouldn’t be cool. The dynamics are totally different
I’m not saying it’s universal. I’m saying it’s not your joke to make - if you have a relationship with somebody it potentially impacts where that is the way y’all banter, then go ahead. But in your day-to-day life with the broader public it doesn’t suddenly give you permission to use ablest language. Intention doesn’t change that.
