I’m a school bus driver and it’s genuinely depressing how often I see a parent waiting with their kid for the bus, face down in their phone instead of paying the slightest bit of attention to their child. I also find it depressing to see a person walking their dog while looking at their phone - not sure dogs actually give a shit but somehow they manage to look sad and neglected anyway in these situations.
I used to play this game with my cat when he would come sit on my lap while I was sitting at my desk working on the computer. I would put a plastic bottle cap on the edge of the desk and he would immediately tense up, but he played it cool for a few minutes and acted like he didn’t care about the cap. Then suddenly the paw would fly out at light speed and knock the cap to the floor. Rinse and repeat like ten times in a row or more.
It’s amazing that Chad Smith, Flea and John Frusciante are all at top of their respective instruments, in a band led by a guy who isn’t even the best shitty rapper.
I always thought the word “ginormous” (a portmanteau of gigantic and enormous) was totally modern, but then I read a book published in 1943 by a Battle of Britain Spitfire pilot which had “ginormous” in its glossary section.
Long before the '70s. The British arms manufacturing companies Vickers and Armstrong Whitworth merged in the late 1920s to become Vickers-Armstrongs Limited. Employees of the former Armstrong Whitworth were not happy about the merger and joked about being like choirboys - because they were being buggered by Vickers (i.e. “buggered by vicars”).
I’ve gone through a skoolie (school bus converted to an RV) project and now most of a house renovation with one 1/4" Ryobi drill and one 3/8" Harbor Freight drill and they’re both somehow still going strong after five years of hard usage. I had bad opinions of both manufacturers before but not any more.
A weird thing I’ve noticed about “correlation does not equal causation” is that some people actually end up thinking it means “correlation does equal not causation” - i.e. if A and B are correlated then A does not cause B (and B does not cause A). A more accurate expression would be “correlation does not necessarily equal causation”.
