Diplomjodler,

Most people can’t do that and generative AI, no matter how limited is still better than the average shlub.

Diplomjodler,

In a few years AI will be good enough that someone can make this on their PC at home.

Secret service agents moments after the 1981 assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan. (lemmy.world)

Excerpt: On this day in 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest at the side entrance of the Washington Hilton on Connecticut Avenue by John Hinckley Jr. Reagan was walking to his limousine after a speech to AFL-CIO leaders when Hinckley, 25, who was standing among a group of reporters, fired six shots, hitting Reagan...

Without Dubya, we wouldn’t have Trump, Putin and possibly Xi. After Clinton the US had a very high prestige in the world and even their antagonists were more likely than not to try and not piss them off too much. After the Iraq invasion the US lost all claim to being not just another imperialistic power and this definitely emboldened the others. Any idea that rules and international law mattered went out of the window. Add to that the normalization of torture, unrestricted mass surveillance and open disregard for democracy and we have a lot of the ingredients for the mess we’re in right now. And let’s not forget the 2008 financial meltdown which contributed to the feeling of disenfranchisement that drives a lot of the present day political divisions. So in my view Dubya really fucked shit up and we’re all still paying the price.

Diplomjodler,

Phantastic! Can we have ads in the task bar next?

Diplomjodler,

I’m glad I don’t live in your immediate vicinity.

Diplomjodler,

If all knowledge is empirical, you have your solution already. Just make an experiment. Use a heuristic to estimate an amount, test it and adjust as you go.

I finally switched back to Linux as my daily driver after a couple of years of being on nothing but Windows.

I ran Manjaro Linux as my daily driver a few years ago but slowly phased it out for Windows for some reason, and I’m finally back using Linux (currently Linux Mint). I gotta say, I don’t know why I ever switched back to Windows. There’s just so much freedom Linux gives you right off the bat that Windows is just plain...

Micro***t Word on Linux and alternatives

Are there good Microsoft word alternatives that support Linux (I don’t mind closed source)? Libreoffice is meh and only office is quite good, but are there any better ones? Also, is there a way to install word on Linux using wine? When I do that my laptop just overheats and loses internet connection.

short question by an aspiring user

Hello, apparently hanging out in Lemmy inadvertently makes you thinking about using Linux. I am planning to install Linux Mint cinnamon on an older laptop, which I want to bring to LAN Parties. From what I read I can just format my C:\ windows disk, install Linux via bootable drive and from what I understand, proton is basically...

Diplomjodler,

It’s called Software Manager in Mint. It’s in the start menu. It’s basically like an app store, but without the surveillance and ads. Just type steam in the search field and click install. Really couldn’t be easier.

Diplomjodler,

Holy crap. You’re right. For the record: I’m an idiot.

Diplomjodler,

And just think about all the species that won’t go extinct! All for nothing!

My PC is hacked

I just received a call from an indian microsoft technician. He informed me that my PC is sending a ton of error messages to microsoft. Most likely it has been hacked, and he would help me by remoting in and fixing the problem for me. I just wonder… Is it my PopOs or my Manjaro PC that sends all this info to microsoft?

Diplomjodler,

Communism. You get it automatically from using Linux. Everybody knows that.

Diplomjodler,

Maybe your other editor messed up the encoding?

Diplomjodler,

Let me guess what kind of people predominantly lived in the neighborhoods that were bulldozed.

Diplomjodler,

Have you heard of Iraq? Germany hasn’t invaded anyone since 1945. What about the US?

Diplomjodler,

Theodor Heuss was never a member of the NSDAP. Lübke is indeed a stain on the history of post war Germany. Can you tell me why you’re not fighting in the war for the greater glory of your Great Führer Putin? Are you a coward?

Diplomjodler,

Mint is a great option not just for beginners. If you just want stuff to work without tinkering too much, it’ll fit the bill for most users.
