Gentoo goes Binary (packages) (www.gentoo.org)

To speed up working with slow hardware and for overall convenience, we’re now also offering binary packages for download and direct installation! For most architectures, this is limited to the core system and weekly updates - not so for amd64 and arm64 however. There we’ve got a stunning >20 GByte of packages on our mirrors,...

If you like having more finetuned control, Gentoo is pretty neat.

Go tell Fedora that then lol. They want it gone to the point where Nate is telling users who want X to stay away on that post. Xwayland I believe will still be around though.

I feel like I’m a chronic distro-hopper sometimes, but no matter how many times I try, I just can’t settle into OpenSUSE for whatever reason. The OBS feels a bit more of a wild west than the AUR.

Considering Gentoo

I have an old iMac that I am planning to install some flavor of Linux on and while I was looking at various distros it occurred to me that it might be a good exercise to install Gentoo on it. Other than a separate machine for documentation and downloading the necessary packages, what else should I have set up to try this? Has...

Worth pointing out that Gentoo also maintains a live USB that runs KDE Plasma.

I have an iPad that I use Mona with. Fedi web clients tend to suck on iOS. On the desktop I use whatever default web client there is, or Elk in the case of Mastodon.

I don’t really use Lemmy enough to warrant using an app for it.

Someone who reviewed Nobara a while back said it best: Arch is bleeding edge while Fedora is cutting edge. Both embrace new things in the Linux world like systemd, Btrfs and PipeWire, but Fedora tries to keep things stable.

I might hop back onto it if my Arch install cakes it.

Plush toys. Just bought a Spyro one and I’m waiting for production to start on the Apollo ones (if you’re wondering, yeah, the one of the iOS app’s mascot)

For whatever reason, Windows 11 is worse at Cyberpunk 2077 than Arch for me. Constant stuttering. It might be that Arch has much less going on than Windows, but it’s enough for me to use Linux as my main gaming OS now.

I’ve tried Euro Truck Sim 2 with my G29, which was built for PlayStation but can work on PC with drivers on both Windows and Linux. On Linux, PS4 mode doesn’t work on Linux, but PS3 mode does - the main thing is you lose the speed indicators on your wheel, if you really want them speed lights you’ll have to go Windows and install G HUB.

Some say PS3 mode disables clutch support since that was the case when using it on a PS3 but IDK if this is the case on PC and specifically Linux. Cursory search points towards no.

Used it before but not for rolling recordings. I heard it can be janky with hotkeys on Wayland, but I’ll have to give it a shot.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yeah, sim racing is very much left out in the Linux world, if not pretty janky. Virtual reality isn’t doing too hot here either, Valve just announced Steam Link for the Oculus headsets, and right now it’s Windows only.

The Unity Desktop Environment an Underrated Masterpiece (unityd.org)

Why is the unity is underrated when its what i use right now with Ubuntu Unity and its actually really great experience for my 2021 HP Stream 11 Laptop and i hope you all to share your experiences using the unity de in Debain Ubuntu Arch Fedora Gentoo Opensuse Etc thanks for your Amazing community my Wonderful Friends

I used it at university. I don’t think anyone there complained about it, and these people were not Linux users…

should watch some of it again tbh, watched it as a kid and I loved Wander Over Yonder, one of McCracken’s other shows.

Vivaldi-to-Firefox here with a little insight! Firefox addons can have the permission to hide tabs, and there are addons that take good advantage of this. Simple Tab Groups can essentially replicate Vivaldi Workspaces, as well as Sidebery if you want something a bit more on steroids in the form of a sidebar.

While I’ve got you here, I’ve had issues with Vivaldi not being able to block Google search results I don’t want to see. Might’ve been me not setting my blocklist up properly, but it works on Firefox with uBlock Origin and Safari with Adguard. Seems like Vivaldi doesn’t support some of the more advanced filtering that Letsblock.it uses for that - AdGuard works.

I’ve noticed what that person is saying outside of the Firefox community, the evangelism and all, and then criticism of Firefox and more specifically Mozilla’s actions in the Firefox community. Case in point, someone laying down the issues with the upcoming Fakespot integration.

Actually confused kpop fans this way, since IU is the name of a kpop star.

Some old video codecs were proprietary and had to be installed afterwards from a separate repository or package, that might be where that notion is coming from. That being said once the relevant codecs are installed (open-source or proprietary) things just work fine, or you could install VLC or mpv and just call it a day.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Not the first time I got that haha, someone I knew who’s into kpop was very confused since IU is the stage name of a kpop star

My PC is hacked

I just received a call from an indian microsoft technician. He informed me that my PC is sending a ton of error messages to microsoft. Most likely it has been hacked, and he would help me by remoting in and fixing the problem for me. I just wonder… Is it my PopOs or my Manjaro PC that sends all this info to microsoft?

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

That one is brilliant. Watched it with friends in voice chat near enough when the video came out.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Ehhh, even for that I’ve had issues, even before the API stuff. The solutions I came across either came from casual word of mouth on Discord, tutorials on GitHub or forums other than Reddit.

I had to help a friend install the VMware kernel modules, since VMware is weird and VirtualBox sucks for virtualising Windows. I had to guide him through it step by step, making sure his commands were exact.

He’s only started using the terminal properly. Hell no, I’m not going to recommend Arch to him.

Still had to leave Reddit. Polandball may be fun but I had to stick to my principles. I wish they had their own community board elsewhere.

Also, is that actually the official YouTube channel? Neat, if it is.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

In the rare case I need a result that I can’t find anywhere else. Otherwise, nah. The way Spez treated the Apollo dev disgusted me enough that I want nothing to do with that site anymore.

The smug, smarmy attitude Redditors are known for even when they’re obviously wrong.
