My father was an academic and the thing academics do when they visit each other’s houses is to bring a bottle of something. So they had a cellar room full of booze. It was awesome when I was in high school in the mid-90s. My parents didn’t drink beer though, so there was no beer in the house except for a six-pack of Michelob at the back of the room that had pull tabs on it. They stopped making pull tabs in 1980. So it was at least 14-year-old beer. It was one of the few things I didn’t think about and/or decide to steal.

I don’t even know why people use Windows 10 (or 11) other than momentum.

I haven’t used Windows for years, but my daughter’s new online school required either a Windows 10/11 computer or a Mac and we can’t afford even a new decent Windows notebook, let alone a Mac, so we ended up getting a refurbished Thinkpad running Windows 10 from NewEgg.

Windows 10. Is. Annoying. As. Fuck.

We are constantly getting interrupted by unnecessary popups (or were until I took the time to disable everything I could think of, which was a pain in the ass).

After running updates, it made me go through a bunch of screens turning down paying for things. Twice. And those popups still asked me about paying for things. Motherfucker, I already paid $300 for the computer, I’m not paying you shit.

And wow is stuff counterintuitive in how to do it compared to either any Linux GUI I’ve tried or Mac OS. Just trying to figure out how to get to a File menu is baffling half the time.

I don’t blame anyone for using XP over that shit. Let alone Linux or even a Mac.

Maybe it’s time we all go back to living like it’s the 80s. Watch OTA broadcast TV and read more books and call people on the phone instead of text them. And use computers to do taxes and word process and play simple games.

I do lament some old things while at the same time being happy things have changed.

I do miss not being expected to have my phone with me all the time - but I’m also happy that I can contact my teenage daughter wherever she is.

I do miss the era of physical media, especially video stores - but I also like being able to download any media I like (arr!) and have a lot of it streaming too, and fitting all of it into a tiny amount of space.

I do miss my old tiny 1980s manual Toyota Corrola - but I also like only spending a fraction of my paycheck on gas because I drive a Prius now. And I certainly don’t miss leaded gasoline.

I do miss the internet of the 1990s when it was more like the Wild West - but I also like things like adblockers and anti-tracking extensions and not having to clean your cookies regularly.

I’m sure I could think of others, but these are off the top of my head.

I always thought it was a stupid movie from when I first saw it in the theater. Stupid and incredibly maudlin. I have no idea why it was so beloved and the Oscars, aside from the technical ones, baffled me.

I mean Tom Hanks is a good actor, but at best you can say he played a ludicrous character in a ludicrous movie as best he could. I wouldn’t give him an Emmy for Bosom Buddies either.

Also, my wife read the book and apparently it, and Forrest, are very different. She said Forrest is kind of an asshole in the book.

FlyingSquid, (edited ) to risa in Oh hey, I heard Star Trek got mentioned on the news! Let's just go check and-
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I love that she’s such a Trekkie that she doesn’t even know how to do the Vulcan salute properly, despite probably having seen images of it her entire life even if she never watched a single episode of Star Trek.

What is that, the Vulcan shocker?

I got to spend a couple of days at a sci-fi convention at a table next to Richard Hatch of the 1970s Battlestar Galactica fame. He was a really cool guy and we spent all day joking around. Every so often, someone would come by and say, “hey! You’re uh… uh…” and I would say, “he’s Dirk Benedict.” (That was his BSG co-star). Once I told a lady that she better not call him Dirk Benedict because it makes him really mad.

If I had a photo of Dirk Benedict, I would have asked him to sign it.

Sadly, Richard Hatch is no longer with us. I really enjoyed hanging out with him. He was way into tabletop gaming and even would leave the table sometimes to host a session. I’m not a huge TTGer anymore, but I wish I could have had Richard Hatch as a GM.
