FooBarrington, to asklemmy in Tech workers - what did your IT Security team do that made your life hell and had no practical benefit?

I had to run experiments that generate a lot of data (think hundreds of megabytes per minute). Our laptops had very little internal storage. I wasn’t allowed to use an external drive, or my own NAS, or the company share - instead they said “can’t you just delete the older experiments?”… Sure, why would I need the experiment data I’m generating? Might as well /dev/null it!

That’s why you buy a jiggler that you place your mouse onto. Not detectable by IT :)

FooBarrington, to asklemmy in What are your favorite names?

[…] but it was revealed later that there was no such term and Willing claimed that he had been inspired to coin the name when he met a little girl named Ida.

Imagine pissing a politician off so hard he tries to name a state after your name plus “hoe”

FooBarrington, to memes in D and D had multiple 10 episode seasons to get it done. Lucas did it in three movies.

Absolutely, they still tried to do their best. Makes it all the more disheartening when they really couldn’t influence the end result.

Yeah, that must have been brutal. Some of the actors let a couple of negative sentences slip during those interviews, but I’m sure they weren’t allowed to.

I don’t know if a single clip shows this better than the reaction of Varys’ actor to his characters death. Just imagine having to sit at a table WITH THE SHITHEADS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE for butchering an amazing character you should be remembered for, and not being able to say anything. Fuck.

Don’t worry, it will pay off when the books are finished!

:(

I feel so sorry for the actors and other people who worked on the show, besides D and D of course. Imagine being part of the biggest TV thing ever and having incredible success, only for it all to fall apart towards the end, completely removing the thing from public consciousness.

FooBarrington, to memes in Public Transit my beloved 😍

It’s a perfectly acceptable use of the meme template, though I suspect in your triggered rage you didn’t manage to notice that.

Thank you for your comment! I understand where you’re coming from, and my previous reply wasn’t formulated in the best way. I’m trying to spend as much time with my remaining grandparents as I can. But I’m not the most “social” person, and at some point my batteries are depleted. I know for a fact that if my grandma actually asked what I said, the charge would last much longer.

So meanwhile, he’s basically impossible to communicate with, but doesn’t tell people “what did you say? I couldn’t hear you”, he just acts like he heard them and then just makes up whatever he thought they said.

Man, do I hate this. My grandma does the same - she didn’t want to get a hearing aid for many, many years which led to her hearing becoming absolutely terrible. She now has hearing aids, but she still doesn’t understand much if you don’t raise your voice a lot. Yet she acts like she understands everything, and you have to try and interpret her nods to figure out if she actually understood it.

I mean, I get why she does it, she doesn’t want to annoy others by constantly asking - but I’d talk to her a lot more if she was honest with her understanding, because it’s impossible to make a point more than 2-3 sentences long as it is.

Sorry, I meant giraffe.

FooBarrington, to mildlyinteresting in I made a website that tells you, based on the year you graduated high school, what your school (probably) got wrong!

I don’t think it’s completely ridiculous on its face. Obviously we have some connection to music (as in, we like rhythms, we like making specific sounds with instruments or our voices, we seem to get into the beat etc.), so why shouldn’t it be possible for music known for its complexity to have an effect on us?

It seems it doesn’t, but I don’t think it’s something where you know so “little” about music if you consider it a possibility.
