Gestrid,

over most tech CEOs.

Let’s not leave the other CEOs out of this.

Gestrid,

Remember when they planned to move over all the Control Panel settings to the Settings app?

In Windows 10?

Gestrid,

Yes, actually.

Well, it’s more like they update the old stuff and still add new stuff on top of it. That way, generally speaking, Windows can remain compatible with older programs.

Gestrid,

it’s why you can’t name files certain names such as CON

To expand on this: The reason you can’t name files CON, etc., is because of a program from the 1960s called Peripheral Interchange Program (PIP), a program used in Digital Equipment Corporation’s computers. The overall OS that PIP was part of was called CP/M.

DOS, which came out in the 80s and was made for IBM computers, was modeled after CP/M, and it kept and expanded the capabilities of PIP.

Then Microsoft came along and created a modified version of DOS called MS-DOS which IBM started using.

Eventually, Microsoft created Windows 95, merging two initially separate products: MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. Microsoft left in the code for handling CON, etc., but they hadn’t put in any limitations for filenames, which caused some bugs. So, from the next version of Windows onward, they disallowed the ability for anything to name a folder or file “CON”, among other related things.

So the reason you can’t name a file or folder “CON” is because of a 60-year-old file-copying program nobody uses anymore.

Gestrid,

Originally, before I posted it, my comment had something like “inb4 someone says you’re making it sound like a great idea”.

I really should’ve kept that in there.

Gestrid,

Only do it if it’s supposed to be part of the wedding. Otherwise, don’t do it. It would be very disruptive and distracting and could make an otherwise beautiful moment very awkward. And it’d be something the bride and groom would have to remember for the rest of their lives every time they put on their rings.

Gestrid,

Sort of. I don’t remember the specifics, but it used to be that some apps completely unrelated to phone calls had to request access to make phone calls because of some stuff they needed that Google only allowed them access to if they had the phone call permission.

I believe Google has since changed it so most of that stuff is now a separate permission not related to phone calls, so you don’t see it as often now. It can still happen with older apps, though.

With the last update, Android also started limiting apps’ access to photos on a per-photo basis. Not even Google Lens (which I use to copy text from slides) can see all my photos. (Don’t get me wrong, though: I’m not naive enough to believe Google can’t see my photos at all.)

Gestrid,

The Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse is public domain. (Steamboat Willie is the name of the episode the design was featured in.)

Gestrid,

The only thing Linux costs is your soul because you will be configuring and fiddling with it for all eternity.

super dude can’t do anything super or else society will now expect him to be Superman

Reminds me of a scene in My Adventures With Superman where Clark literally cannot go to sleep because he can’t stop hearing people needing help (thanks to his super-hearing). He stays awake the whole night helping people.

Gestrid,

people unsatisfied

This describes me seeing my Astro Boy 2003 English dub torrent 99.98% complete a few weeks ago.n

Gestrid,

Immune system to the infection: “If I die, I’m taking you with me!”

Gestrid,

They’re not the only one filled with rage.

Gestrid,

Honestly, I’d probably use Tor more if I knew which sites on the dark web were “safe”.

Basically, I know how to use Tor, but I have no idea where to begin with it.

Gestrid,

Some of them do.

In any case, typically, the ones that aren’t occupied are always slightly ajar, so there’s no need for an “occupied” indicator.

Gestrid,

It probably won’t always work, but pressing 0 is usually a “hidden” option that’ll connect you to a human. It used to be used to connect people to an operator, and many companies still use it that way, even if they don’t advertise it.

Gestrid,

They just want you to put your plates back together.

Gestrid,

Probably because it’d take a ton of time and money (because of API limits and costs), and it’d potentially disrupt Lemmy too much.

Reddit is a massive site, as far as how much content it’s stored over the years.

Gestrid,

And it just got renewed for two more seasons after this one. variety.com/…/futurama-renewed-season-13-14-hulu-…

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

Gestrid,

No, on the bottom picture. They censored the bicycle tire pump for some reason.

Gestrid,

This. I’ve gotta take about 5 minutes or more to mentally prep for a phone call if it’s for business. Afterwards, I’m exhausted.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

Gestrid,

I use it for two things: checking out protest stuff and checking the only subreddit (it’s a small one) that’s actually keeping me on Reddit.
