And I just really have no idea how they have made stuff like resetting networking/connection issues worse over time.
While I generally agree with your comment, they did add an option (don’t know how long it’s been there) where you can right-click on the Internet icon, click the troubleshooter, and there’s a button immediately right there in the troubleshooter to reset the adapter.
Well, it’s more like they update the old stuff and still add new stuff on top of it. That way, generally speaking, Windows can remain compatible with older programs.
it’s why you can’t name files certain names such as CON
To expand on this: The reason you can’t name files CON, etc., is because of a program from the 1960s called Peripheral Interchange Program (PIP), a program used in Digital Equipment Corporation’s computers. The overall OS that PIP was part of was called CP/M.
DOS, which came out in the 80s and was made for IBM computers, was modeled after CP/M, and it kept and expanded the capabilities of PIP.
Then Microsoft came along and created a modified version of DOS called MS-DOS which IBM started using.
Eventually, Microsoft created Windows 95, merging two initially separate products: MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. Microsoft left in the code for handling CON, etc., but they hadn’t put in any limitations for filenames, which caused some bugs. So, from the next version of Windows onward, they disallowed the ability for anything to name a folder or file “CON”, among other related things.
So the reason you can’t name a file or folder “CON” is because of a 60-year-old file-copying program nobody uses anymore.
Only do it if it’s supposed to be part of the wedding. Otherwise, don’t do it. It would be very disruptive and distracting and could make an otherwise beautiful moment very awkward. And it’d be something the bride and groom would have to remember for the rest of their lives every time they put on their rings.
With the last update, Android also started limiting apps’ access to photos on a per-photo basis. Not even Google Lens (which I use to copy text from slides) can see all my photos. (Don’t get me wrong, though: I’m not naive enough to believe Google can’t see my photos at all.)
Sort of. I don’t remember the specifics, but it used to be that some apps completely unrelated to phone calls had to request access to make phone calls because of some stuff they needed that Google only allowed them access to if they had the phone call permission.
I believe Google has since changed it so most of that stuff is now a separate permission not related to phone calls, so you don’t see it as often now. It can still happen with older apps, though.
super dude can’t do anything super or else society will now expect him to be Superman
Reminds me of a scene in My Adventures With Superman where Clark literally cannot go to sleep because he can’t stop hearing people needing help (thanks to his super-hearing). He stays awake the whole night helping people.
No, it shows me which files aren’t complete. It’s a tiny bit of the final episode and a .sfv file that was supposed to check for file integrity. So it’s not a complete loss, but it’s still disappointing.
My issue with video game subtitles is actually the opposite problem. The subtitles have finished appearing, but the voiced line is still going. It’s especially bad when you’re playing in an audio language you can’t understand. (Some Japanese video games still don’t have English voice acting. Yakuza, for example, only recently started doing English voice acting.)
Weirdly enough, I just learned in my Developmental Psychology class recently that there’s a very surprising amount of sex between old people going on in nursing homes. Some of the students who’d actually worked in nursing homes before even confirmed it. So the trope may not be as unfounded as we might think.
Not saying old people hitting on kids is okay. It’s freaking weird and gross. Just stating an interesting fact.
