Synology is more closed down but they make it very easy to use. Note that nas prices don't include the hard drives - that could be $250 alone. Recommend finding one from past generation.

But even a furnace/fireplace is subject to incomplete combustion, where some portion of the wood is transformed into byproducts that rob some of the energy of the fire. There's actually a big difference in the amount of energy you can get out of a fire, depending on the type of stove that's used.
That's some of what NGOs have tried to do for developing countries - find cheap and easily produceabke stove designs that can reduce the amount of wood needed and improve air quality in the home.

Go start appreciating art. I don't mean pay thousands for paintings. I mean go to poster shops, art galleries, craft fairs, etc. if you find something that you really like, you can probably find a print that is a decent price.

Or just start looking for pictures online of places you went to vacation. Flickr was good for this, if that's still a thing. Yes, you could print big versions of your own photos - but why when there's someone out there that probably took a better picture with a much nicer camera. Just get that photo printed on a metal frame or canvas sheet and hang it on the wall.

So, it's more interesting than this. The trees are playing the squirrels. There's a normal amount of acorns that can support a normal amount of squirrels. But once every few years, the trees make a bunch more acorns. More than the normal amount of squirrels can eat. But not frequent enough that the number of squirrels increase. So the squirrels go crazy and hide em everywhere that year, but there's no way they can eat them all, so there are a bunch of acorns planted.
Tldr: trees manipulate # of acorns to get squirrels to plant more.

I think you need to try this out with an open mind. Plenty of people use laptops as their only computer, only with trackpad. Plenty others just toss a Bluetooth mouse in their bag and use that.
I get using a PC, but a laptop does have its advantages.

Trades are a good option if you like figuring things out and if owning your own business sounds good to you. There's tradeoffs to that, but we're always going to need more welders, plumbers, HVAC, electricians.
