It’s not impressive to attach green plastic bits to camouflage a cell tower (which IMO makes it uglier and more noticeable than just a bare antenna mast).

It would be extremely impressive if they could actually derive the required power from onboard photovoltaics though!

Vegetable is also exclusively a culinary definition. Vegetables are essentially any edible plant structure that are not sweet and aren’t the seeds directly (which are grains or nuts). Typically vegetables are flowers, leaves, stems, or roots, but some non-sweet fruits like cucumbers, peppers, and green beans are also squarely in the vegetable category despite definitely being fruits, no reason they can’t be both.

Fun fact: Strawberry is called an accessory fruit because its seeds are on the outside, so the seeds themselves are the real “fruits” (in the same way each grain of rice or wheat is itself a fruit, well technically the fruit consists of the grain plus the outer pod/husk that gets removed when harvested). The red flesh we like to eat is the accessory fruit because it in itself does not contain seeds.

Raspberries and blackberries are called aggregate fruits because they’re essentially many fruits attached together as a single structure. Actually, a strawberry is called an aggregate accessory fruit because it has many “fruits” directly attached to an accessory structure.

Also, unironically, e-bikes are more fun than cars. You feel the acceleration much more on a bike than a car despite moving slower, and the breeze going by you feels pretty nice too.

Not to mention a lot less likely to kill someone.

My biggest issue with scooters is that the sidewalks on most streets in North America are way too narrow to safely use them while others are walking, and we’re seriously lacking in dedicated bike lanes. Both of which are issues with the prioritization of car infrastructure over all else as opposed to problems with scooters themselves. Since scooters cannot safely run on the road but is still too fast for exclusively pedestrian paths. Where there are dedicated bike lanes in my city, scooters share them with bikes perfectly fine.

Yeah, unfortunately speed limits don’t mean anything and studies show that drivers pretty much always drive as fast as they think they can regardless. The issue is that North America has stroads which are highly conducive to driving fast, damn near highway speeds. If we had the narrow, potentially tile or even cobblestone local streets that European and Asian cities have it would be less of a problem because those conditions directly promote lower speeds and more attentive driving.

It’s also not unheard of either. IIRC Japan had speed governors on their cars for a time, which limited them to their national highway speed of 100 km/h (which is still very fast to be fair).

Also, you know what else goes comically over budget and over time? Car infrastructure projects! But when talking about highways it’s “an investment for the country’s mobility and ultimately its economy” yet with trains it’s “a pointless money sink that will never succeed due to this one very commonly experienced setback.”

(Full disclosure I’m not in the UK, I’m annoyed at him for the people there too, especially since their politicians’ attitudes toward high speed rail seem pretty similar to attitudes in Canada where I am.)

It might sound crazy, but a coast to coast high speed rail line could potentially be conceivable in Canada if we really went all in on rail. We only really have one or two major cities for each of the interior provinces and BC, so just draw a line connecting all of them. There’s not that much in the way outside those cities, and this corridor could connect to the Montreal-Quebéc corridor, and then further on toward the east coast where it again only has to connect a few major cities.

The biggest problem would be BC though, we have a ton of mountains over here which might require some serious tunneling.

Perhaps we could colocate it with the Trans Canada Highway corridor?

Can any Americans confirm or refute whether US schools actually punish you for getting beaten up regardless of whether you tried to defend yourself? It sounds way too stupid to be true yet I hear about it again and again.

Also what the hell happened to Stand Your Ground that the US is so infamous for? That doesn’t apply to children who are victims of assault and battery?

Reading this and all these other comments I wonder if at least part of it is just petty bullshit by the school administration, like “How dare the two of you create more work for us at our jobs for which we have licenses! You both need to be punished for that!”

I’ve legit once killed a hard drive by absentmindedly standing it up on its edge and then accidentally knocking it over on a hard table. It would seem to work for about two minutes when turned on and then would suddenly turn off and you can hear the read write head abruptly returning to the home position.

So you’re telling me I experienced loss for real?!

I just use Discord from my browser where it’s at least sandboxed and doesn’t have access to my filesystem.

Since it’s an electron app anyway it’s basically the same as the app.

I’ve legit heard people say things along the lines of “The largest SUV or trucks are safer for Americans because it can hold up better in a collision with deer which we have a lot of.” (Because apparently large wildlife aren’t common anywhere at all in the rest of the world.)

They have a point though, and they’ll hold up especially well against a specific, extremely common subspecies of deer called “humans.”
