People clearly do care, that's why they manufacture drama. It helps drive engagement and views.

Of course, it's hard not to look down on people who develop parasocial relationships with youtube personalities.

But some people are very lonely. So if anything we should be critical of the youtuber who knowingly cultivate unhealthy fanbases and profit off their misery.

That's the thing. From what I've gathered, a lot of what he says is perfectly sensible, often age old philosophical advice. But that's how they get you. It's like Russia Today. They mix the lies with plenty of truth. If they only told lies, they would be far less convincing.

Of course, another thing Peterson does, is use expensive words to make himself sound smarter than he actually is. If you have a related degree or spend a little time on wikipedia, you'll notice he's often talking nonsense. But to the layman, Jordan sounds like he's a great intellectual. I don't think he's deliberately trying to scam his followers, I think he earnestly wants to help them. I'm willing to believe he means well. It's just that he's like a respected doctor who thinks he knows better than his lawyer and ends up getting himself convicted. He may be an expert in his field of expertise, but he clearly isn't outside that field. He often sounds like an overeducated idiot. There are plenty of those in academia, unfortunately.

If anything, I find it a damning indictment of society (and the media), that a run of the mill motivational speaker can become so popular.

I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds

Almost all art is influenced by other art. But Tarantino very closely copies some scenes. Think a literal collage, made up of photocopied bits of another work, rather than a painting inspired or influenced by another work. Tarantino is honest about this.

Is that a great painting? I quite like it, it's iconic, but it's not the Mona Lisa, and Warhol is not Da Vinci.

People who haven't watched a lot of movies, think Tarantino is Da Vinci. That he created an iconic scene, like Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.

There's nothing wrong with Warhol. Hell, it's ok to think that Warhol is a better artist than Da Vinci, think that Warhol's Mona Lisa is a better painting than the original Mona Lisa, art is subjective after all.

But it's a mistake to think Warhol is a genius, because he painted the Mona Lisa. He didn't. That was Da Vinci. If you're going think Warhol is a genius, you should think he's a genius because he took an existing work and manipulated it in a way that is genius.

I did the sums, and the US would have been able to fund a large moonbase for the next century, mine asteroids AND seriously begin colonising Mars.

But instead of becoming an interplanetary power, the US chose to blow up brown farmers.

This is why the EU is sometimes called a regulatory super power. Because the market is so large and important, the rest of the world often adopts EU regulations. Whether it's GDPR or environmental standards, it's cheaper to make one EU compliant version of your product or part than different versions for different markets.

Not any other kind of super power though, we're far too busy squabbling amongst ourselves. Some still haven't learnt the lessons of the last two world wars.

Unfortunately the BBC has decided Australia doesn’t get to watch any Doctor Who that was released before 2005 or is a spin-off. So uh, anyone got a plex share or torrent with the lot? Immediate preference is getting the same versions as what is available on iPlayer in the UK, but would settle for DVD rips if that’s what’s...

Bit of a tangent, but it's the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who, so BBC Sounds has loads of the audioplays available to listen. Those should be available to listen, even in Australia. They invariably star the original actors, I just listened to one which stars David Tennant and Tom Baker.

Non-profit social media isn't exactly healthy either.

I know beehaw is a relative safe haven, but venture to other instances in the fediverse and you'll find cesspits of toxicity that are as bad as it gets.

And given what my experiences with toxic positivity, cancelling and culture wars in minority run communities which should know better, I doubt beehaw doesn't have its fair share of toxicity too. Even if you manage to keep out the worst bigots, people who have been hurt or bullied, quite often end up hurting or bullying others.

Europe:

  1. 'Local' stores were/are often ridiculously overpriced, had a very limited range, and it's not like we're talking about independent stores either. Many of those were killed by the unfair practices of large corporate chains who would sell at a loss. Before amazon killed chain mall businesses, the mall killed independent businesses on the high street.
  2. Packages are delivered to me personally. If I'm not there, they don't deliver and are forced to try another time.
  3. No need for a PO box, as small independent stores and grocery stores often have a side hussle as a pick-up point. You go to pick-up your parcel and buy something in their store or do your groceries.
  4. Amazon prime is entirely unnecessary. You simply have to wait a bit longer.
  5. You can find independent sellers on amazon, then if their product is good, you buy from them directly next time around.
  6. Thanks to amazon, ebay, etc. it's become far easier to buy second hand products. In the past you'd have to go to a second hand market, garage sales or visit twenty vintage/antique stores to find what you needed.

Amazon is evil though. So, yeah.

But there are perfectly rational reasons to use amazon.

It's kinda funny in a dystopian way.

A lonely guy playing a creepy hentai game gets some sexual gratification from his time spent interacting with a piece of software and is at least somewhat self-aware. He knows it's just software, even if he 'married' his bodypillow.

Meanwhile there are increasing numbers of people unaware they're regularly interacting with bots online, not realising one of the reasons social media is making them sadder is because they've atttempting to fulfill their need for social interaction with a facsimile thereof.

It's not unlike Idiocracy, where they give the plants Brawndo instead of water, then wonder why the plants are dying. Vast swathes of the world are feeding their social needs with social media brawndo.
