Hyperreality,

While that is funny, I do find it annoying when supposedly reputable news organisations act like they'll ever sell these in significant quantities, and that this is anything other than a marketing campaign.

Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

Similar to the recent question about artists where you can successfully separate them from their art. Are there any artists who did something so horrible, so despicable, that it has instantly invalidated all art that they have had any part in?

Hyperreality,

I've linked to them as a reply to the comment you're replying to.

Agree about the Witch Trials podcast .

Hyperreality, (edited )

Here's a discussion of that podcast:

And another one:

Yes, they're long videos. Yes, there's a reason they have millions of views. Genuinely interesting.

Hyperreality,

Thanks. Useful for the next time I see someone posting this kind of nonsense.

Ripping Amazon movies

Hi people, since we see more and more complaints regarding old movies being not politically correct anymore, I am getting more and more concerned about some purchases I made some years ago. Specifically, there is a set of local movies in my mother tongue which I bought and therefore want to download them in case they are...

Hyperreality,

Are you sure someone hasn't already posted them on one of the torrent sites?

What is your unpopular flim opinion

I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds

Hyperreality, (edited )

Oh, wow. Old comment.

The easiest route to learning about movies, is to watch a lot of movies, and reading about the movie you've just watched. Wikipedia, a more in depth review, interviews with people who made the movie (not just the actors).

Google a top 100 list. Work your way through a few of them. Eg.

https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-time

They also have cool features. For example, Michael Mann's made a load of really cool action movies. Here's a feature on his movies they made:

https://www.bfi.org.uk/features/where-begin-with-michael-mann

Or here's famous critic Mark Kermode's top 10 of horror movies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qdj_22hHRyM

Yes, he has a PhD and is a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the UK equivalent of the Academy of Motion Pictures. No, he's not a snob. Texas Chainsaw Massacre's in the top 10. So are some older classics, which are still good.

But if you want to read something, you could try:

Bordwell and Thompson. Film Art: An Introduction.

David A. Cook. A History of Narrative Cinema

Hyperreality,

Thanks for recommendation. I'll add it to the list.

Doesn't always work. Phones can turn themselves on. You can't remove the battery anymore either.

Personally, I just accept that my privacy will always be violated using a smart phone, especially because I'm forced to use google and whatsapp. But I leave my phone at home when possible, especially if I'm thinking of attending a protest or doing stuff, and chuck it in a muffled/closed draw when I'm not using it.

Hyperreality,

Nope. Do hills too.

It is a bit tougher up hill, like cycling in a higher gear, but because you lose less power due to gearing, it's not as bad as you'd expect.

Why do people hate on mobile games, call them "not real games" and mock them, when some mobile-exclusive games are the best games I've played?

The Infinity Blade or Minigore series, for example, or anything made by Illusion Labs. These games are genius and most consoles don’t even have a touch screen or utilise it well like some smartphone games do....

Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

I have come across a lot’s of people like these. like 99% of them. Sometimes it makes me think twice if what i am saying is wrong? What’s wrong with them. Is it so hard to swallow your pride and acknowledge that the other person is speaking facts? When they come to know they are wrong they proceed to insult/make fun of...

Basic g-shock or the classic F91W.

The former, I'm a fan of the DW5600BB. Blacked out, minimalist, works with almost everything (even a suit), indestructible. A choice even watch snobs can respect. 50-100 dollars/euros on amazon.

The F91W comes in a few fun colours. I personally like black and gold. It's retro, so it's invariably seen as cool. It's also dirt cheap. 10-20 dollars/euros.

They've been making them for decades. A classic. Different colours if that's your style.

Which YouTuber's voice can lull you to sleep?

I’ve exhausted things I can sleep to on Netflix, and it’s literally impossible to sleep to things on Prime (so I barely watch anything there; it’s not worth falling asleep to something I like, since I might be punished for it), so I’ve started putting on YouTube in the evenings since it won’t wake me with silence at...

Hyperreality,

So bubbly and cloying, and happy... just like the Federation. If you drink enough of it, you begin to like it.

Hyperreality,

that ‘source’ is also an opinion peace without any sources.

?

The source of that article are the authors. One a professor at Oxford, the other a lecturer at MIT. The professor's also written a book about China which is mentioned at the bottom of the article. Pretty weak argument to say that isn't a valid source. A bit like an anti-vaxxer saying an article about vaccination written by a doctor isn't a valid source in an internet argument.

Just show me where mainstream media is deliberately bashing China. If it’s that rampant it can’t be that hard right?

I googled myself, because I was curious. Not necessarily bashing, but plenty of sensationalism. For example, NBC at the time of the balloon incident:

Chinese spy balloon gathered intelligence from sensitive U.S. military sites, despite U.S. efforts to block it

Fox:

Spy balloon likely sent extensive intelligence to China, experts say. The Pentagon said Thursday it 'acted immediately' to counter a collection of sensitive information

Guardian:

China ‘spy balloon’ wakes up world to new era of war at edge of space

CNN:

Why the Chinese balloon crisis could be a defining moment in the new Cold War

Wikipedia:

U.S. president Biden ... however stated that it was "not a major breach", and that he also believed that the Chinese leadership wasn't even aware of the balloon. ... On September 17, 2023, in an interview with CBS news, General Mark Milley, the retiring 20th US chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated “I would say it was a spy balloon that we know with high degree of certainty got no intelligence, and didn't transmit any intelligence back to China." Technical experts had also found that the balloon's sensors had never been activated while it was travelling over the Continental United States. The general also touched on a leading theory that the reason that it was flying over the United States, was probably because it was blown off-track, where the balloon had been heading towards Hawaii however winds at 60,000 feet simply came into the equation. Miley said, "those winds are very high.. the particular motor on that aircraft can't go against those winds at that altitude."

Media: the Chinese are spying on us. Are you ready for WAR?

Reality: the wind blew a balloon of course and by now most of us have already forgotten what turned out to be a nothing burger of a story.

Hyperreality,

The range thing is also a huge factor. Federation photon torpedos have a range of 300,000 kilometers. Star Wars is pretty inconsistent, but depending on the ship range seems to be maxed out at hundreds of kilometers. They also seem to have poor sensors.

In Star Wars the Scimitar is considered a fast ship, it's top speed is apparently 1200km/h in atmosphere. IRC that's half as slow as a present day SR71 blackbird. Trek is inconsistent, but the TNG technical manual says that impulse can reach 0.75c but is usually limited to 0.25c to avoid time dilation issues. C being light speed. So that's roughly 150 million kms an hour except in emergencies when it's more than that.

So basically, ships from the star trek universe could simply keep a safe distance, safe in the knowledge the empire's ships are far too slow to ever catch up conventionally.

As your video points out, trek ships are also shielded. But so are photon torpedos, which at one point allows a photon torpedo to burrow into the stellar core of a sun. So the Death Star isn't an issue. Just fire a few photon torpedos at it. Apparently the Death Star only had shields to protect against energy weapons, not kinetic shields because that would block heat escaping the exhaust ports.

Then there's the whole teleportation thing.

And replicators.

And cloaking.

And red matter.

...

The longer you think about it, the sillier the comparison gets basically.

Hyperreality,

Heat and peel (slowly). You can pop some hot water in it or use a hairdryer.

Strong alchol on a cloth or papertowel to remove what remains.

If all else fails WD40 also works.

This is from removing labels from cars, where you have to be careful to prevent damage to the paint/clear coat.

With glass you can use a razor to scrape off whatever remains, but mostly it's not necessary.

Hyperreality,

This is one of the reasons I regularly deleted my reddit account. I was on reddit for over a decade, but I always had a relatively new account.

When I mentioned doing this, I invariably got called paranoid.

Hyperreality,

From what I've heard, a big issue is condoms. Length isn't an issue, girth is. Too large or too small and it rolls up and/or is more likely to tear. Like a too small latex glove, except a dick there's nothing to stop the condom rolling up. Cleaning a toilet and the glove tears? Shit happens. Condom tears? Baby or STD happens. Not funny.

But from what I can tell, a lot of people who post in forums like that are roleplaying having a large dick or gay guys who want to creep on guys with large dicks. People are weird.

Hyperreality,

The reality is that creeps harassing pregnant women is the least of reddit's problems.

I mean, not so long ago reddit hired a paedophile apologist and IRC diaper play furry fetishist as an admin. They claim they forgot to vet them, but this is the site that tolerated a subreddit with pictures of underage girls for years and gave the mod a custom award.

Expecting reddit to be a safe space for this kind of thing, is like worrying about Epstein stealing beer from the fridge, after you've asked him to baby sit.

Honestly, you might as well burn the whole thing down to the ground. That's the only way to make that site safe for women.
