The mystery of the preferred pronouns injection (lemmy.ml)

If have not assigned a “Display name” to my @davel@lemmy.ml account, and as expected—at least on lemmy.ml—it displays as “@davel”. However, on every other instance it displays as “davel [he/him] (@davel@lemmy.ml)” (on Hexbear.net it looks slightly different: “davel [he/him]@lemmy.ml”)....

Yup, I removed my own display name a while back but the change doesn’t reflect on remote instances.

InEnduringGrowStrong,

I don’t think it’s a functionality but that deleting one’s display name has issues federating to other instances.

I just re-added a (different) display name, testing…

[Discussion] How do you feel about age verification on Porn sites? (lemmings.world)

Porn sites Pornhub, XVideos, and Stripchat face stricter requirements to verify the ages of their users after being officially designated as “Very Large Online Platforms” (VLOPs) under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA)....

Yea but a lot might see a boobie, can you image the horror.
Content filtering solutions are imperfect but it’s good enough and easy enough to use at home if you need to.
Worst case, your kid learns to bypass content filtering and sparks a career in IT or something.

Then just use one of the existing content filtering/ parental control tools for your home network?

I don’t see the benefit of another privacy invasion when there’s already solutions for this exact problem.

Then have a nice day, I guess

I’m glad school’s over… but then at least school was meant to have an ending, unlike this grind.

All binoculars are binoculars you can use with your feet. I have the toes dexterity for it, but no longer flexible enough though.

By now I think in either, but not always the one I mean to speak in. So sometimes I’m looking for words in my native language and I only have the English one in mind.

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think there are even a few grammatical errors that native english speaking people are more likely to be doing that us folks who learned it as a second language.
When I see things like “should of”, “would of”, “for all intensive purposes” it’s usually coming from a native speaker.
I think someone who learned speaking the language before first and writing it second is more likely to make these.
I assimilated “should”, “have” and “of” before I really used contractions, so I never make that mistake.
It’s even somewhat jarring to read.
should of… of what?

GPS just to get around the city they’ve lived in for 15 years

I do, but only because it knows about upcoming traffic and construction so I can avoid it altogether instead of having to react once you’re stuck in it.

Makes sense.
I even have an account on yours already and is actually the first one I made.
Choosing an instance has been the most awkward part yet. More easily accessible info on instances' admins, hosting situation, funding, etc. might help.

My first visit was very confusing because I tried browsing a community that had just defederated us, which really isn't too obvious as a noob. I registered on lemm.ee to see what beehaw was even about, and I'm going back and forth between the two homes trying to choose.

I very much like the /c/agora idea on sh.itjust.works so I'm definitely sticking around.
I think an important part is getting to know your instance's admin as a person, and I haven't really taken the time to do that.
See ya around
