Iron_Lynx,

How many cars have you seen with step-free access?

And besides, surely there exist no disabilities that inhibit people’s ability to operate a vehicle like a car, right?

  • Godzilla is a metaphor (either intended or simply ingrained in the Japanese psyche) for Hiroshima and Nagasaki

From what I’ve gathered, not quite. The film showed up around the time of the Castle Bravo tests at the Bikini Atoll. The bomb tested there turned out to be dirtier than predicted, and fallout made it to some Japanese fishing vessels. It became a bit of an international incident.

And then the original Gojira film launched. And one early scene showed a fishing boat, which went under in a bright flash of light.

Gojira, or Godzilla as he was westernised, was not just the personification of the bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it was the personification of the fact that this could happen again.

One take on it that I’m copying

Iron_Lynx,

And that part still holds. As Godzilla moved (surprisingly quickly) from existential horror to pulp action, the radiation theme endured.

Iron_Lynx,

It’s one of the reasons why I think America is institutionally fucked & rotten, that it’ll take the better part of two centuries to fix it, and that if instead we want stuff to be fixed within a generation, we may need a violent uprising.

Iron_Lynx,

Because:

A: the system is able to elect candidates who win despite only getting a minority of the vote. This problem becomes worse the more parties participate.

B: in order to maximise the chance of an acceptable compromise taking office, very fringe groups must vote for a very mainstream party. Usually that leaves only two parties that make sense.

C: as these parties become the political space, voting for a specific interest can erode support for the nearest main party, guaranteeing a victory for the other main party.

Bonus: D: growing comfortable with their voter base, it is in parties’ interest to grow more radical.

In fact, without McCarthy and the Red Scare, I would find it strange that the American political scene has developed a nationalist “Republican” party and a moderately conservative “Democrat” party. Many more sane parliaments and governments develop their left to be a socialist or labour party.

Iron_Lynx,

I can’t get out and vote.

I can though in about two weeks. And the election will probably be just as significant.

Iron_Lynx,

Even some non-EU places are part of Schengen. Notably Norway and Switzerland.

Iron_Lynx,

Hell if I know answers. Google Images seems to draw a blank on the creator. Though they did find uncropped versions, but they’re all on FB and Reddit…

Iron_Lynx,

Perhaps this would not happen if you insist on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blue_stop_sign_-_hawaii_-_oct_2015.jpg. Sure, it takes a little bit, but since the rendering of the underscores is put after including them in a hyperlink, I suspect going the extra mile makes it more reliable.

Either way, on web (Firefox in Windows 10), the fixed link works as desired, while the original is borked. And the hyperlink behind text one… Well, you’ll see.

Iron_Lynx,

As you put it, the web version renders & includes the backslashes, causing your link to break on lemmy.world, running the website itself in Firefox on Windows 10.

Iron_Lynx,

Probably because it’s a funny phrase, especially if you compare it to the English one. The English just sounds technical, while the German one seems to have a bit of a wink.

Iron_Lynx,

Porsches are vain and shallow. At least a DAF or a Scania works for where she’s at.

Iron_Lynx,

And in Germany, in many places, that speed limit is not a limit. This is the sign for speed limits you see when you enter Germany. Notice that the “130” is inside a blue square, instead of a red ring. That means the 130 kph speed is only a recommendation.

Iron_Lynx,

NGL, this feels like what could come to mind if I think of “manglement”

Iron_Lynx,

It looks to be another federated instance that seems to be compatible with other Lemmy instances.

Iron_Lynx,

Same. I never subbed to pornographic subreddits, so when I saw a lady broadcasting her breasts on my front page, I had to do a double take. And then I made this post here xD
