JakenVeina, to asklemmy in What do you think of sports analysts ?

I think about the one team whose games I watch and realize the commentators are a huge part of what I enjoy about watching. I would enjoy it much less without them.

Then I think about watching other teams on occasion, or about the occasional broadcasts that are national or put on by a different network, where there’s a different team of commentators, and I pretty much hate them all.

So, I’d have to say “depends on how interesting/entertaining they are.”

JakenVeina, to asklemmy in What are the facts you remember for no specific reason

The Roman names for the three fates are Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos.

Actually, I suppose there is a reason I remember this, it’s because of Golden Sun.

JakenVeina, to askelectronics in Any good beginner guides for identifying broken parts in a desktop computer ?

Unfortunately, the best method by far for identifying bad components is “have a spare you can try instead” or “take suspect parts and swap them into a known-good system.”

I.E. test your parts.

Memory and hard drive tests are the first thing you should run, for almost any problem, just because they’re so low-effort. Swap them into a separate system to test, if possible, and definitely make sure you’re running tests from a USB stick or CD-ROM, to help eliminate as many variables as you can.

PSU is a good bet after those, for intermittent problems, since the ENTIRE rest of the computer relies on it, and unreliable power can cause really weird and unpredictable failures. But there really isn’t much you can do to TEST a PSU without buying an electronic load tester that’s gonna cost you more than a new PSU itself. If you don’t have anyone to borrow from, a spare PSU is really a solid investment.

or the equipment os designed horribly

I find this entirely believable. There’s a LOT of equipment out there designed for profit over user experience.

But you’re right, it’s not really worth speculating over.

JakenVeina, to asklemmy in Ancient wisdom often sounds like common sense now that it is commomly taught. What is some ancient wisdom that we no longer teach because it was wrong?

Almost anything disease-related, E.G. humors.

JakenVeina, (edited ) to asklemmy in Hot tub owners: any tips? any regrets?

Never would have bought one myself, but it came with the house, and it’s one of my favorite things. It’s remarkable how physicall and mentally refreshing it is after doing a bunch of yard work or after a particularly mentally-exhausting day at work.

Ours has broken down twice, though, in 6 years, so between that and regular maintenance, it’s an ongoing expense.

JakenVeina, to lemmy_support in Seeing read-posts despite "show read posts" being un checked

Same. Confirmed through both Jerboa and the web UI.

JakenVeina, to lemmyshitpost in Can't remember the last time I wasn't tired

First time I’ve ever seen noon and midnight represented as 12nn and 12mn, and I’m kinda down for it.

JakenVeina, to lemmyshitpost in I believe theyre talking about newborns there.

Yeah, but like, holy crap, there’s a way to make phantoms not spawn?! TIL

JakenVeina, (edited ) to linux in Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack

Did anyone really think that making UEFI systems the equivalent of a mini OS was a good idea? Or having them be accessible to the proper OS? Was there really no pushback, when UEFI was being standardized, to say “images that an OS can write to are not critical to initializing hardware functionality, don’t include that”? Was that question not asked for every single piece of functionality in the standard?

JakenVeina, to cooking in [Question] Are you cooking something other than turkey for Thanksgiving?

We’ve done Cornish Hens exclusively before, but we usually do ham plus Turkey.

What we did one year and are gonna do again this year that’s a little non-traditional is the boneless turkey roasts that you can get, instead of a full turkey. The breast roast gets a wet salt brine overnight, stuffed, and then wrapped in bacon. The dark-meat roast gets dry-brined with salt and a few herbs, and then coated in solid fat to develop a crust.

JakenVeina, to asklemmy in What game do you play to just chill?

There is. Just released last week.

JakenVeina, (edited ) to linux in A response to the "Boycott Wayland" article

As someone with 0 investment in this whole ecosystem, I saw and perused this article like a week ago, and my immediate impression was “Why is this guy constantly saying ‘Wayland breaks XXXXX’? Wayland isn’t breaking anything, it’s new tech. Wayland has certain features, or it doesn’t or doesn’t yet. The only folks breaking anything are those swapping use of X with Wayland, within various apps or tech stacks, potentially prematurely, where Wayland doesn’t yet have the full set of features needed.”

Whoever this is seems to have a really poor understanding of long-term software development, despite being way more invested in it than I am.

JakenVeina, to piracy in What alternate Youtube frontends are there? And which ones do you recommend?

SmartTube is excellent on our NVidia Shield. Not sure what other platforms it works on.
