I release code under GPL licences , I seed distros and have contributed financially in the past.

Just this morning I was listening to Ramsey Lewis - Only when I’m dreaming and I had to run it back a few times just to soak it in.

This is why I stick to Krogan owned sites

Humans would probably kill them or enslave them for profit. 😩

I don’t agree with avoiding stable distros. In the case of Debian for example stable gets priority on security patches. Just subscribe to the security mailing list and have auto updates on.

Also download any disto or bleeding edge container and scan it and you’ll have vulnerabilities in some library. The ecosystem is always moving. The question is how exposed are you.

Use a firewall, secure your browser and whitelist sites you trust to run JS. Stick to repos. Scan downloaded files via virus total or open In a vm. Dont install what you dont need.

You are far more likely to get compromised in a site breach than to get hacked. The browser is the main attack vector that you need to secure.

Also dont run servers if you dont know what you are doing. Use a non networked VM to practice.

Dont blindly paste commands and be sure to read the source before you compile and run some random program.

Watch out for rogue containers and libraries .

bodhi, its been a long time since I heard that name. I used to use it on one of my old machines years ago. Good to hear its still going .

I'm looking for a privacy respecting vacuum robot

I’m looking for a vacuum robot preferably under 500€ and with a cleaning station. My main concern is that most robot vacuum providers seem to need to be connected to the internet. Are there any providers that either don’t need that, where I can block the internet connection or any other way not getting a spy in my home?...

I have an ecovacs deebot n79S and it just uses a remote. You put it on auto and let it do its thing. The pathfinding isn’t great but it does the job and you can manually control it if needs be. There is an option for connecting an app but thats not happening. As long as it comes with a remote you should be good.

I should also add that its easy to clean and pop the front wheel and rear brush out as well as the 2 spinning brushes. The dust compartment slides out easily too.

We have had it for about 2 years so far and it still runs fine.

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

Also they contribute loads to the Linux ecosystem so im happy to support them as I see it as a win/win . The sales are great too I spend like 50 ducats a year and get like 9 or 10 great games for that.

Another reason to stick to your distro repositories. This should totally be disabled by default for modern browsers.

I made the swich a year or two ago. It is much better I find. I leave it running in a tmux session on my server . with btop on one pane and switch to another with a split view to do work. It allows me to take a quick glance at any time while not taking the focus from what I was working on.

Lol no idea, some people just want to watch the world burn I suppose. Thanks kind stranger. Wishing you and yours the best.

Is Ubuntu deserving the hate? (lemmy.ml)

Long story short, I have a desktop with Fedora, lovely, fast, sleek and surprisingly reliable for a near rolling distro (it failed me only once back around Fedora 34 or something where it nuked Grub). Tried to install on a 2012 i7 MacBook Air… what a slog!!! Surprisingly Ubuntu runs very smooth on it. I have been bothering all...

I used to use Ubuntu before unity and switched to Debian 👑 in 2012. I still have to use Ubuntu for work and I just get on with it. It could be worse… I could have to use windows.

Anyway my main gripes with Ubuntu are snaps and how they keep swapping packages in apt to be installed as snaps .

I dont hate it, its a tool and in most cases I can use it and there is no problem if not there are other options.

JoeKrogan,
@JoeKrogan@lemmy.world avatar

If you do use one use fake data at least. Temp phone number and throwaway email. Fake name and address if needed. You can rent a P.O box if you need to receive a package.

All they need is the DNA to sequence. The account details won’t make a difference as long as you can access it. You can ask a friend to pay for you and pay them cash or use privacy.com or one of those prepaid debit cards.

No if I have to keep fixing it , it is not worth my time.

I installed owncloud years ago and came to the same conclusion and just got rid of it. I use syncthing nowadays though its not the same thing.

JoeKrogan,
@JoeKrogan@lemmy.world avatar

Still better off paying for a VPN in these trying times. It has more use cases and can be shared between multiple users to bring the cost down to practically nothing. You can also download and keep your Linux ISOs .

That being said if it works for you then you do you.

JoeKrogan,
@JoeKrogan@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. I dont feel comfortable contributing to closed corporate ecosystems.

This was all covered in the on boarding process. We’ll let it slide this time but next time have your hat on or you’ll have to walk the plank 😄

Do you mount an embedded Linux file system to the workstation and use your host scripts or do you SSH/SCP and deal with the limited shell commands?

I’m playing with a couple of routers and comparing proprietary to open source on the same hardware. I miss my .bashrc functions and aliases… and compgen, tree, manpages, detailed help, etc; the little things that get annoying when they are missing....

JoeKrogan,
@JoeKrogan@lemmy.world avatar

I normally SSH in and do what I need or scp a script or whatever over .

JoeKrogan,

Steam deck for sure. Being on Linux is just the icing on the cake. I only play on the deck now and take it with me when I travel. I also use it to watch stuff from. I also love that valve are not rushing another model. There are many years left in the device. Also for emulation it just knocks it out of the park.

One option is a live CD or a VM and in this case you can restore the state after each session. In both cases only your IP, timestamps, browser details and everything you interacted with on the site is stored by Facebook. But no new hardware or cookies will be stored on your device as it is wiped each time.
