This is a bit of me-thing, but yeah, I’m annoyed that YouTube is the way it is. It’s non-trivial to embed videos from there without violating the GDPR, so embedded videos are basically not a thing these days on general-purpose social media.

And personally, I also want to avoid the tracking from clicking through to a YouTube video and Google encourages long-ass videos, so I always hesitate before clicking through. Also, people without ad blockers go through a completely different circle of hell before a video starts.

Basically, I miss the days when memes could just be short videos. Where everyone could see on the embed that, oh, it’s a 30 second video, I can watch that. And then they’d just click play, without leaving the page.

I do understand that likely no one would care to provide the bandwidth for dumb meme videos on PeerTube either. But yeah, I just dream of that being a thing.

I wish this kind of disclaimer would have been in my physics book in school. Big reason why I didn’t pursue an academic career in physics is because all the quantum stuff sounded like a religion, trying to convince itself that superpositions are real and you can’t measure things, because you just can’t.

Many years later I know that there’s explanations for these things and that some of the illogical things I’ve been told were not nearly as certain or just flatout wrong. Because yeah, we’re still pushing the boundaries of our understanding outwards…

I was only vaguely aware of the algorithm on Spotify and that not being allowed to skip very often is a thing there, and man, this comment read like a completely deranged monologue from some sort of alternative, dystopian reality.

At least, as far as I can tell, defining a function requires spelling out function and seems to require being defined on multiple lines, too.

Well, certainly not everyone agrees that people should be entitled to an opinion here, because we have science on that shit. And science tells us that nature is messy.
Whether we’re talking about psychological gender or biological sex, proclaiming that there’s only two categories is provably false. It’s like proclaiming that all colors are either orange or blue.

I guess, you’re allowed to be wrong. Hell, you’re even allowed to be wrong publicly. But if you are, you’re not entitled to not being corrected.

Thing is, there’s no rational reason to arbitrarily use groups of 8 bits for transmission over the wire. It’s not just ISPs who use bits, the whole networking industry does it that way.

My favorite is when the top-voted, accepted answer looks correct, but misses various edge-cases. And then there’s a second-most-voted answer which corrects the first.

Most questions about JavaScript are like that, for example, which was rather horrifying to realize. If you just leave a junior to their devices with that, they will absolutely copy all these correct-looking answers into your code base.

I especially find it weird, because castles and churches exist, too. Sure, they were somewhat further along with technology, when those got built, but it still took a ton of physical labor and at least churches weren’t built out of pure necessity either.

Recently, I saw some news page where there was a video, but it was just stringing together the sentences from the article on top of a random stock image.

I was extremely confused why this exists, but then realized, I hadn’t unmuted the video. Surely, it reads it out for sight impaired folks.

…nope, there was no audio. They just figured, they should have a worse way of reading. And of course, it would float on top of the article, too, to make reading that worse as well.

At $DAYJOB, I was evaluating a data collection software and needed some files for it to read. I had some random text files top-level in my home-directory, so I figured, I would just tell it to read from ~.

I expected that it might read directories recursively by default, but I could just stop it, if it does that.
What I didn’t expect, is that yes, it does read recursively, but also that by default, it deletes the files it has read. It had eaten a good chunk of my home-directory when I realized.

Now you might think, it doesn’t just delete the files, it transfers them to a different place, so surely, the data still exists. And you’d be right.

However, while it reads from directories recursively, it doesn’t retain the directory structure. So, the contents of my home-directory were all still there, just completely flattened in one big folder.

I’m mostly a fan, because I don’t feel like I have to have faith.

If my instance explodes, I’ll make an account on another instance. If the Lemmy devs collectively evaporate (and neither me nor others want to pick up the slack), then I can go to Mastodon or Kbin or whatever.

Individual rogue instances can be defederated. If e.g. Reddit truely disappears over night and Lemmy were to gain mass market appeal, then I can likely find a more isolated instance with a smaller community sharing my interests.
