In all fairness I just started the 3rd book and I’m unsure of where they’re going with it right now… but the first two were great reads. The whole class color system is a bit weird at times I have to admit but it’s still great entertainment. I’d also be interested to read your opinion more than a rant about it if you feel like it.
The trick is to use a different filter than other scenes. It doesn’t really matters what filter, as long as it’s different. Also, cinematographers use different in-camera setups, different lenses, usually they use old school lenses with chromatic aberrations and distortions and so on, plus physical filters in from of the lens. They can also change the lighting, set decoration, actors can change their behavior, editors can change the rhythm and so on.
The blurrier-gray-ish filter is usually a low contrast or blooming glass filter in front of the lens. Basically a piece of glass very lightly frosted that disperses the light around a bit before hitting the film/sensor.
I adored that phone!! I still miss the interchangeable covers instead of adding a stupid case to the phone. I had a few cases I could swap depending on my outfit or the occasion. I wish new phones would adopt a similar idea instead of having to add an extra cover on top of the phone. I don’t need it to look good under the cover. Just make the outside looks nice.
My opinion: look for a new LED flashlight. It will have the proper circuit and design to take advantage of LED capabilities including high brightness, PWM dimming, power efficiency, and heat management. Adapting an incandescent flashlight will always be a compromise in one of those.
Edit: I have a similar flashlight and I bought a tiny usb-c rechargeable flashlight that is brighter for 1/5 of the size. And for battery life, you can recharge your keychain size light with any usb battery pack.
