MangoKangaroo,

Timeshift supports rsync snapshots. No btrfs needed :)

What Tweak, Program, ... changes a Desktop Environment from unusable to great for you?

I have used Linux on and off for 15 years. I consider myself a casual user and stuck to the mainstream DEs (mostly KDE, XFCE and some Cinnamon). Gnome has been a hurdle for me before and after the big version 40 changes, I couldn’t get my head around how they handled the workspaces and workflow. At some point I I tried out an...

MangoKangaroo,

I’m not sure that I’d call vanilla GNOME (or any modern DE) unusable for me, but Tiling Assistant is really great. I’m looking forward to GNOME’s upcoming tiling changes so I no longer have to rely on an extension to give me quarter tiling.

Dash to Dock is also nice, though I don’t necessarily mind having to hit Super to see my dock.

MangoKangaroo,

You’re very kind to offer. It’s mostly just self-image stuff that will have to clear out in its own time. I’ve at least got an okay support structure, so I’m not going it alone.

MangoKangaroo,

Thank you 💜

MangoKangaroo,

Didn’t really do much during the night of the new year. I’ve spent the last couple of days on a rollcoaster of anger and depression over things that I have no control over. At this point I’m just ready for school to start back up so I can busy myself with something other than work.

MangoKangaroo,

I’ve gotten to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day without any of my relatives going on an unhinged conspiratorial rant, so I’ll call it a win.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

MangoKangaroo,

Probably COSMIC. I’m also excited to maybe see HDR and improved tiling in GNOME.

MangoKangaroo,

Beyond what people have posted, I also believe I saw something about GNOME planning to implement something like this soon™️

MangoKangaroo,

Thank you. :)

MangoKangaroo,

Thanks! 💜

MangoKangaroo,

At least I’m not the only one who got to enjoy some December exams. Fingers crossed for you!

MangoKangaroo, (edited )

It’s okay. On my desktop with an Intel card my headphones occasionally have an issue where they’ll stop actually playing sounds until I swap the codec in GNOME Settings. I’m pretty sure it’s an issue with the headphones proper, because I don’t think I’ve had the issue with my earbuds or when using them on my laptop.

Speaking of my laptop, if I have WiFi turned on, the Bluetooth goes to shit. It sounds fine, but the audio will randomly cut out. I blame Realtek.

I Made Screen Brightness Control on Gnome Much Better (gitlab.gnome.org)

Anyone here struggle with trying to adjust brightness on Gnome in low light? At the low end, the steps are way too far apart, and at high brightness they’re almost imperceptible. Every other operating system uses a brightness curve that better matches human perception....

MangoKangaroo,

I run GNOME on my laptop and I’d definitely love to see more robust brightness control. Thanks for putting in the work to make this happen.

MangoKangaroo,

Since nobody has said it yet: Ubuntu server or Debian. /s

In seriousness, I use both. They’re pretty great. Note that if you use Ubuntu server you can get Ubuntu Pro free for up to three devices. This comes with ten years (!) of security patches. Great if you aren’t keen on upgrading anytime soon.
