I was going through Pine64’s page again after I found the latest KDE announcement. With that said, I seem to see a lot of issues with firmware on the Pine, whilst the Librem is just plain out of budget for me. Was interested in how many people here run a Linux mobile as a daily driver, and how has your experience been?...
I would have to dispute your claims on this one. The only really modern mobiles running Lineage OS (by modern I mean released in this year and the previous year) are perhaps some European Xiaomi/Realme devices, maybe a couple of Samsungs, the last-gen OnePlus and some Motorola devices, and the Pixels.
As I have been complaining for a long while now, the entire custom ROM market is moving towards the Pixels, which is a dreadful move in my opinion, but what I can do
My problem is the lack of availability of custom ROMs on new devices like the newest OnePlus and ASUS. Not the fault of the maintainers but it is what it is. I don’t want to be locked to Pixel hardware because come what may I will never trust Google on a single thing
That’s just brilliant. I was interested in hydroponics too, but quickly realised that economically speaking, I’d be better off purchasing my vegetables anyway.
Lol, that’s a laptop that looks like a thinkpad but with ARM instead. No thanks, even Purism laptops is better than that (except shipping to outside the US)
I hate that Framework doesn’t support Coreboot yet. That’s perhaps the only laptop brand I’d be willing to spend $1000 on to purchase a laptop from, but unless they act on it I’m not buying anything from them. Unfortunately, System76 isn’t really present outside the US, which makes it a real pickle I’m in
I’d love to get into digital electronics and hardware hacking but I have no use for the skills in my life as of now, which means I have 0 motivation to pursue them
At Open Source Summit Japan, Linux and Git creator Linus Torvalds talked about Rust in Linux, Linux maintainer fatigue, and AI’s future role in Linux and open-source development.
As I said, his change in behaviour towards fellow developers is a welcome change. There’s no doubt about that.
I just wish he would continue to rage against companies up to no good, especially for FOSS. I never want him to get mild with Nvidia, and I want him to praise AMD a bit (they deserve it, and his opinion holds value).
I would have liked for Linus to maintain his angry-man-finger-thrusting self against evil corporates like Nvidia. I suppose I’m asking for too much, but his mild-mannerisms towards developers is a welcome change. Towards such corporates though, not so much. I would have liked some more motivated cursing against Intel and Nvidia and IBM. Oh well.
Other than that (which is a minor gripe from me at the most), touching message from Linus. Indeed, the maintainers are graying, and the current generation isn’t that interested in kernel programming. I’m sure there will be talent around (as long as the big companies need Linux to run their servers, I’m sure someone will turn up), but someone to rise to the helm with a fiery approach to openness is very important to my heart. I don’t think we will ever see another Linus in our lifetime, and I will personally grieve the day Linus and his core set of maintainers pass away.
I am not a programmer, and the best I can do is provide some funding to people who can/would engage directly with the kernel. But if the situation becomes so dire, I too will get my hands dirty, if nothing but to help the cause. Long live FOSS!
I believe PostmarketOS with the PinePhone Pro is a decent experience. Nope, it’s not. Don’t get it if you don’t want to contributr your time to the project. With that said, I’m not too confident on its usability, 2 years after its release. What do you run and what has your experience been like?
This is an insult to this community, and such low-effort shitposting shouldn’t be allowed.
On a serious note, this is laughable at best. Of course, there is no limit to security paranoia, and I’m hardly qualified to comment on the affairs of Cybersecurity for better OPSEC, but I wish they would be at least a little bit more informed than average. This journalist seems to have very little idea that the government knows what they are saying anyway
I don’t get it. Why on earth are ASUS, MSI, Asrock etc paying AMI when they could literally get the FOSS community to write it for them with a little help?
