Nemo,

On a tiny island in an artificial lake in the middle of a big city park.

Nemo,

I’m not European or from an Atlantic island, so my opinion isn’t worth squat. I’m seeking understanding, not trying to spread my own.

Nemo,

Okay, having read both articles just now, I have serious critiques.

The first fails to either prove it’s thesis or, somehow, understand the ethos of liberalism. Very good write-up of the rise of fascism and its causes, though. Overall not a bad article but unconvincing.

The second conflates capitalism and liberalism and jumps between one and the other nonsensically, making it essentially all noise.

Nemo,

Ethics. It touches on every other subject.

Nemo,

The Yugoslavian film Underground, if you can find it. Hilarious and heartbreaking by turns, with a splash of Magical Realism.

Nemo,

I’ve never owned a car and probably never will

Nemo,

Do they look appropriate for semiformap occasions, though?

Nemo,

Lots of things. But if I notice a game becoming addictive for me, I stop playing. I know too many addicts.

Why does "hide read posts" apply to my own submitted posts?

It’s strange and unintuitive that my own submitted posts are hidden with this basic feature. Given the slow pace on some communities as Lemmy grows, it gets really repetitive without the ability to filter out read posts. On the other side though, the ability to review my posts and check back on them seems pretty basic as a...

Nemo,

Don’t you get reply notifications? I get reply notifications.

I also don’t check “hide read”, though, so we’re clearly using the platform differently.

Gamers who have gamed for a long time

do you find it difficult to get into games? I’ve got Epic Games and Steam Games libraries chock-full of classic top-tier games along with many other newer games like Stray or 2077, and a bunch of indie titles. I just can’t be bothered to download and install them, much less try to get into the characters and storylines. Used...

Nemo,

Not at all, but I don’t buy many games. I try to play demos before purchasing the game, if possible.

Why wasn't NYC's Central Park concept copied by other cities?

I’m talking about a massive park in the absolute heart of the city. Located such that is naturally surrounded by city high rises. *People are giving examples of parks that are way off in the boonies. I’m trying to say located centrally, heart of the city, you know where the high rises are. Yes I understand nyc has more, the...

Nemo,

Chicago, too, plus the Emerald Necklace of parks and greenways ringing the city.

Nemo,

Not all work is paid!

But no, not all paid work is prostitution. Only when something personal is used for commercial ends does it become even figurative prostitution.

And literal prostitution is even narrower, narrow enough that it doesn’t include all sex work. That’s right, not even all sex work is prostitution.

At what point is violence on a large scale justified?

I know this is a really vague question, but it’s been on my mind A LOT lately. I’m specifically asking about people fighting on behalf of a group that is subject to oppression of some kind. 3 years ago, with all of the protests in America that included violence majorly against property and minorly against people but were...

Nemo,

When widespread violence is already in play, then the use of widespread violence in opposition is justified. It’s not always the right move, though.

Edit to add that, looking at history, those advocating for large-scale violence in pursuit of a righteous cause are typically more interested in the violence than the cause.

Have you had any bad experiences with people on Lemmy?

I was recently talking to some friends about Lemmy and the whole Fediverse idea, as it seemed like a really cool part of the Internet. As I was talking about it, though, I realized how unusually friendly this whole place is, and I joked that I “surprisingly haven’t found any bigotry.”...

Nemo,

Maybe that’s why I’m enjoying lemmy more: No access to reports and removed comments.

Nemo,

The version of this I use is “You can’t unmash a potato.”

Nemo,

Natural is not always good. Being disappointed or frustrated are acceptable reactions; getting upset is not.

Nemo,

Instead of livejournal, I wrote my own blogging software in PHP.

Nemo,

Childbirth. It’s been three times now, and it’s so bad. Worse that Boy Scout summercamp latrines. Worse than when a dog farts after eating people food. Worse than a septic tank. Worse than opening a fridge left unplugged and full of food for a month.

I’ve smelled all these horrible things and more, and childbirth is the worst.

Nemo,

Just turned forty, don’t work in tech. Yeah, I know I’m the weirdo here.

Though it does seem so far like lemmings act less teenaged than redditors.
