NeoNachtwaechter, to linux in systemd 255 Released With A "Blue Screen of Death" For Linux Systems

Is it April 1st already?

NeoNachtwaechter, to linux in Zorin OS 17 Beta Released with Quick Settings, Spatial Desktop, and More

I hope we can separate the DE from the OS some day

We had that from the beginning of X. It could abstract nicely from all unices and even a little M$.

That era ended (unintentionally) with the dawn of KDE and GNOME, and I’m afraid it won’t come back with Wayland.

NeoNachtwaechter, to asklemmy in Make Lemmy thrive ( Privacy & Censorship) ?

tl;dr why should this belong here?

NeoNachtwaechter, to asklemmy in Be honest: if you had the power to stop time, your morals would go out the window.

LOL you know what, I am currently reading the original.

I guess it’s you who wants to read it again.

NeoNachtwaechter, (edited ) to asklemmy in Be honest: if you had the power to stop time, your morals would go out the window.

No, the question isn’t clear.

Which time do you want to stop?

Since Einstein’s papers from 1905, we know that every being lives in it’s own time and also every place and every thing in the whole universe has it’s own time. So, which time do you want to stop?

NeoNachtwaechter, to linux in Automatic backups of inode tables and partition info for easier data recovery

I wasn’t saying backups are useless or something.

I was saying there are situations that backups can’t solve.

e2image

There’s a good reason for the 2 in the name.

Today we have ext4, and ZFS of course.

NeoNachtwaechter, to linux in Automatic backups of inode tables and partition info for easier data recovery

instead of using a proper file level backup

Backups do not solve everything.

For example once I had a bad cable, and it did a kinda sneaking silent damage. Let’s say 5 or 50 broken files every day. And only after some weeks I noticed some of them, and there was hardly a chance to identify them each day. And sometimes there was damage to the file system, too. It took a while find the root cause.

Today I use ZFS with redundancy and it does the recovery all by itself and my sleep is so much better :-)

NeoNachtwaechter, to asklemmy in Why is such a tunnel needed?

They dug it out before. Later they rebuild it. But if they wait for a year, nature suffers much.

NeoNachtwaechter, to asklemmy in What is the most terryifying siren noise?

The most terrifying siren is the one of a dive bomber.

NeoNachtwaechter, (edited ) to linux in what caused you to get into Linux?

I was lucky to meet some real operating systems (VMS, Unix) before I got contaminated with Microsoft products. So when I first heard about Linux (some guy in Finland wrote a new kernel and showed it to Prof. Tanenbaum, and when he grows up, he wants it to become a full fledged unix :-)) I knew already what it is.

NeoNachtwaechter, to linux in Broke a partition. Is there any way of saving it?

there - create a new partition at the exact same location, of the exact same size.

… exact same starting block, size and geometry.

NeoNachtwaechter, (edited ) to asklemmy in People of Lemmy that take more than 5 seconds to start your car and drive, what are you doing?

15 sec is plenty. After 15 sec all of your engine’s oil has traveled through the pump and through the whole system 1 - 1.5 times.

Is your engine >30 years old?
