Legacy News Media: We literally have no idea why Gen Z has given up on literally everything, has decided to not save for the future, and instead is trying to live and enjoy their life now.

Real World: Dearth of opportunities to make a life for yourself, every industry has reached is maximum zenith and now makes money by wringing pennies out of consumers, you need money to exist anywhere, there are no more places to just be, and the government is clearly corrupt and about to be taken over by a literal fucking fascist party because the other party is full of pussies who don’t want to “upset the status quo” and keep letting the fucking fascists get away with shit, because “we have to follow the laws, even the ones that clearly benefit the fascists, passed by fascists. It’s the law and if we don’t take it seriously, everything falls apart. Sorry that means the fascists will win.” Oh, and climate change is about to destroy our ability to even have a functional society.

As a millennial, I’m ready for a fucking dirt nap. Things just keep getting worse and fuck nobody is coming to save me or anyone else. Everyone is so caught up in their own lives and problems no one has the time or effort to give anyone else, meaning we’re all suffering alone.

Literally what is even the fucking point of struggling to the natural end of my life? There isn’t one.

It didn’t have to be this way, but a lot of old selfish pieces of shit decided that it was more important to trash the planet and live the high life during their hayday, and then give all their children and grandchildren a swift kick in the ass and says “Children are our future! I just made that up! Now go fix the fucking messes we made for you! We’re not concerned with mass extinction, because we’ll be dead and it won’t be our problem! Good luck, or not!”

@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It’s not just Netflix, it’s every licensing issue in every country.

I love lots of foreign television, but quite a lot of it isn’t immediately available (or ever available) in my country.

If I want to watch those shows or movies, I am literally at the mercy of the piracy community helping me access them, because there’s a good chance that it’s either months or years away from release in my country, or that I’ll be unlucky and it will never release here at all.

It’s a completely broken system, and Gabe Newell called it what it was over a decade ago. Piracy is a service problem, not a pricing problem.

It won’t be solved without massive changes to international copyrights and how shows/movies are bought and sold on an international market.

I would rather hope that he legalizes and codifies the “flat” management structure, disallowing any one figure head from taking over and fucking things up.

Valve annoys people because it can be slow to choose to do something, because everyone works on what they want to work on, but it means average workers have a lot more agency in how they’re involved in the company.

I’m sure there’s till unofficial cliques and leaders, but having it in legalese for the employees post-Gabe would be nice.

Where the living fuck are the EFF’s team of lawyers?

I know they generally focus on US cases, but god damn, you’d think the egregiousness of this would get their asses involved.

SnotFlickerman, (edited ) to privacy in Cops Used DNA to Predict a Suspect’s Face—and Tried to Run Facial Recognition on It
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Cops only like technology when they can abuse it to avoid having to do real investigative police work.

They don’t care to understand the technology in any deep manner, and as we’ve seen with body cams, when they retain full control over the technology, it’s basically a farce to believe it could be used to control their behavior.

I mean, on top of that, a lot of “forensic science” isn’t science at all and is arguably a joke.

Cops like using the veneer of science and technology to act like they’re doing “serious jobs” but in reality they’re just a bunch of thugs trying to dominate and control.

In other words, this is just the beginning, don’t expect them to stop doing stuff like this, and further, expect them to start producing “research” that “justifies” these “investigation” methods and see them added to the pile of bullshit that is “fOrEnSiC sCiEnCE.”

Every Man is an Island motherfuckers realizing that No Man is an Island.

Humans specifically only were successful because of pack hunting. We died quickly in nature as individuals. Anarcho-capitalism rejects this need for each other replaced with the unsound idea that each individual can handle everything on their own.

Works great until you break your fucking ankle and realize nobody decided being a doctor was important or the only person with medical skills has decided they don’t want to do business with you.

@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Because Microsoft ain’t gonna make Windows any better for this form factor until it is way late to the game, as usual.

Windows is basically a product for corporations now. Consumer Windows is an afterthought most of the time.

However, I could be wrong with Xbox’s theorized pivot away from hardware.

I guess you’ve never had a “new boss” come in, huh? Even in a private company?

Man, new bosses love to shake things up, to “make the workplace theirs.” It’s literally one of the most common things to happen when new bosses come, and very often it results in a deep change in company interpersonal politics.

Barry used to be your go-to guy, but the new boss has decided they just don’t like Barry. Why? They couldn’t tell you, but Barry gets under their skin, so it doesn’t matter how he’s the best guy on the team who can handle whatever is thrown at him, his role is going to be dilluted and minimized and he’s going to be pushed and prodded by negative management to try to get him to just quit. Eventually, Barry will just quit because who wants to work under those conditions. Barry found a better job, and now he’s replaced by your new bosses 20-something nephew who doesn’t know what the fuck he is doing at all and everyone can’t stand. He’s a fucking loser who keeps getting promoted by the new boss.

I’ve been through that too many times to pretend it’s just “that easy.” No, generally the kind of people drawn to that role are controlling dickheads who have their own dickhead “vision” of being the biggest dickhead to ever dickhead.

If only. Democrats are historically milquetoast in response to Republicans.

This charade has been going on for 40-some years or more. At least since the likes of Reagan and Gingrich.

  1. The court could go out of their way to rule on the case and make sure it only applied to Trump and only in this instance.
  2. Just because the Democrats are suddenly given power doesn’t mean they will use it to stop fascism. Sadly, too many in the Democratic party are invested in the US Empire to just let go of how things currently work. Their long inability to act is literally why we are at the precipice of fascism fully taking over. The Democrats fell in line with Bush’s illegal war in Iraq, and they declined to do anything about the fact that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld & Co. signed off on torture. We’re about to have Trump as a Dictator because we refused to do anything about leaders who were and are war criminals. People expecting Biden to do something, even if it is ruled in his favor, are waiting in false hope, imho.

EDIT: To be clear, I’d be ecstatic to be proven wrong, honestly. It would be nice to see Democrats really stand on the right side of history, not just partially or out of convenience.

Look, despite Musk’s PR, I never read a story about Musk like this:

In 2004, Wolpaw was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Expecting his condition to require a departure from the company, he spoke with managing director Gabe Newell, who surprised him by offering an extended leave with pay. “Your job is to get better,” Newell said. “That is your job description at Valve. So go home to your wife and come back when you are better.”

Gabe Newell isn’t some kind of saint, but he does at least treat his employees like human beings, unlike Musk who famously berates his employees and treats them incredibly badly, especially if they have to (gasp!) miss work for any reason.

So while people shouldn’t be praising Valve as some kind of panacea in the world, because they’re still just a company, the reality is things like this have endeared Newell to the gaming community and made them believe he did care about a quality work environment.

A reminder, 2004 was before Wolpaw had written for multiple hit games from Valve. Portal came out in 2007 with Wolpaw as one half of the writing team. A few years later he would be head writer on Portal 2.

Those games would not have been the same if he had been let go from Valve when he was sick with ulcerative colitis.

Just a different perspective, I think it’s unfair to compare Newell to a fucking slave drive apartheid fuckhead like Musk.
