Go anyway, the western US is beautiful.

Yup. I used to be a vol firefighter. If your response time for any emergency service is under 5min you’re very lucky. But often even that isn’t enough. You need the tools and skills to do what you can until help arrives. Fire prevention, medical and self/fam defense. Until they get there it is up to you, and many people don’t realize that.

Sounds like a legal nightmare

Extensive firearms training is a bit of a stretch. Yes combat jobs get plenty of range time, but many only get a basic refreshers as needed (before deployment)

But yes military bases are pretty strict compared to outside the fence

People get wrapped around the axle about this. If you don’t know the military doesn’t turn you into John Wick. Most people in the military have never been issued a gun outside of qual, but all are given a bare minimum level of training just in case things got dire.

Annual (if that) weapons training is basically “don’t tk your buddies 101” a bit of shooting to prove you can and cleaning after. You only get more if direct combat is your actual job, or will be soon.

Just like anything else if you want to get good you have to put in some effort on your own time.

SomeAmateur, to memes in Respect to anyone still managing a library of mp3s

My journey to mp3s was weird. Phones were already becoming common in high school but I wanted a music player after using the in-game ipod in Metal Gear Solid 4. But iPod classics were expensive and weren’t drag and drop. Being on flights and in areas with spotty reception really made me see the value of portable offline music. No ads, no buffering, and no drain on my phone battery.

Yup I still use a standalone player. I got a Sony Walkman NWZ-385 first which was 8GB. It has the best ui I’ve seen on a player and I still have it. But now I moved on to a Sandisc with a 256GB micro sd card. Before I had to pick and choose but now I can have hours long files just dropped in no prob. And I have it a copy of everything on my pc hard drive.

Very accurate

I don’t mind passion from a hobby perspective. Some people are passionate about sports, coding, radios, plants, stamps etc. It’s okay to be passionate about cars and trucks, just don’t daily drive these if you want people to respect you. Same with stanced cars.

The problem as I see it is that these modded ones are pushed as still being practical when they are really only big toys. Have you ever noticed that jacked up trucks rarely have caps or toolboxes on the beds? The extra height takes away the utility of the bed and loading/unloading anything is a pain in the ass. They pour all this money into making their truck less useful.

I’ve driven big F-250s for work. They have a time, a place and a purpose. And that is not as a daily driver for most people.

SomeAmateur, to memes in 30's wheel of pain

I assume most meme makers live sedintary lives which has their own forms of wear and tear (always sitting, poor posture, lots of concrete surfaces) and not exercising enough makes any physical labor hurt more becase they aren’t used to it.

Big generalization but that also describes me when left to my own devices. I felt a lot better getting outside and working mildly physical jobs

SomeAmateur, (edited ) to memes in When you set your alarm every 5 minutes in the morning.

You know the “most annoying noise in the world” bit from Dumb and Dumber? I had a roommate with THAT and about five other loud ass annoying things as his alarms. If I didn’t have to get out of bed to do so I would have done the same.

It seems like people used to suburbs see that as the pinnacle of life but of course that’s not true.

In my experience rural areas get it because they are farmers and beekeepers with an understanding that working with nature is the way to go

SomeAmateur, to memes in literally no clue

Looks like it would make a decent buffer in case of wildfire too

SomeAmateur, to memes in Does it not pierce thine very heart?

And stuff like that is absolutely facinating to me, in small doses anyway. I keep a journal and I think I’ll write a few pages about what my routine is. At home on the weekend and at work.

I love planes, but I wouldn’t want to live next to a fighter base. Cargo planes are super cool though

Props tend to be more efficient aircraft when it comes to fuel consumption but fly relatively low and slow. Jets are faster so they make more sense for ferrying people and cargo but they burn more fuel in the process.
