Actually, the OS runs from SD and for mass storage I have a single USB drive. The container’s data is stored on the USB drive along with the docker-compose.yml file. So if I lose the SD it’s just a case of reloading the OS, installing docker and docker-compose. Configuring the disk to mount on boot and then running docker-compose to get back up and running.
Docker data is sent via rsync to a Pi Zero should the USB drive fail. Plex/Jellyfin content I don’t care too much about as they can be “obtained” again 😉
From the first boot it’s only a few lines to get docker installed ready for running containers. Containers are awesome!
I’ve been running Plex on a Pi 3 and now Pi 4 along with multiple other containers with no real problems. I don’t transcode obviously but have no issues with performance.
I also installed Jellyfin last week to run side by side but ended up uninstalling as even when idle the memory usage went through the roof.
Weird. I’ve been trying to find a distro I’m happy with and was setting Fedora KDE up today. Ran though my bookmarks and found no videos played on Twitch. Had to install codecs to get it to work. I hadn’t seen this in previous distros. Is this specific to Fedora? Other than this hiccup I’ve enjoyed it so far.
I liked how straight forward Linux Mint is but prefer KDE Plasma. Plus Mint seems quite far behind in versions.
I started this way today but kept coming up with an error with rsync during install. I tried in Virtual Box and had the same error. I gave up and just installed Fedora in the end.

And fuck. I really miss plex. I’ve had Netflix and Hulu forever as family won’t let me cancel. Decided to sign up to Paramount + for some Trek. Twice in lower decks it didn’t save my watched episodes. Doesn’t mark episode as watched if you exit during the credits. And multiple playback issues....
Out of the box it can play audio in the background, and now that extensions are available you can block ads as well. You don’t really need constantly updating 3rd party clients or questionable firewalls anymore if you just want usable youtube on a phone.
I’ve ran Pihole for years but switched to NextDNS. It gives me more control over my kids access.
For example scheduled access to YouTube and Roblox. Also, since it’s a public service it means I can block them regardless of network. So for example when we are on holiday. My eldest worked out he could use network data on his phone to avoid the Pihole.
Oh, and it’s DNS over TLS so queries are now encrypted rather than plain text that regular DNS.
None of this will block YouTube ads though. For that I use NewPipe or Firefox and uBlock Origin.
