Wanting to improve my Linux skills after 17 months of daily driving Linux

Third same. Before my current PC, my old PC was a 6yo install. Never had problems that weren't caused by me (although I could count on one hand the number of times I had issues in that 6 years).

My current install is more than 2yo trouble free.

I've DE hopped and fiddled with heaps of stuff in that time too.

Capitalists argue this because it gives them the appearance of a moral high ground.

Eshittification shows how untrue this - capitalism by its very nature will always devolve into worse and worse offerings because it's reliant on squeezing out ever more profit.

Capitalism will only ever puh out the bare minimum of technological advancement. And keeping people in indentured labour (aka employees) to the capitalist system so that they either have no time to come up with innovations themselves or they own the intellectual property of any indentured workers means that the overwhelming majority of innovation is monopolised by capitalism too. Which also contributes to the appearance of pushing advancement.

some guy that used to watch Star Trek as a kid wants to feel like they live in the future while piggybacking on someone else’s work.

I don't think they care about their own nostalgia. I think they ant to use other people's dreams to make a lot of money. I'm also sure some of them genuinely just ant to push the technological envelope just cause they can, ethics be damned. But ultimately, it's just money.

I would love nothing more than the utopian future Trek promised but greed is killing it.

Suspension on my laptop (closing the lid) causes Wifi to not be available. (kbin.social)

Hi, this is a long lasting problem that I didn't really manage to fix when I started using linux (Mint, Cinnamon). But now that I've been using it regularly for half a year and I have more experience in fiddling around, I'm trying to get it resolved....

Looking at the Arch Wiki, it looks like this is a known issue. Give this solution a go:

EDIT: on closer look, it's not much of a solution. I assume you've tried restarting the network service and that doesn't work either? Possibly you could automate the airplane mode key twice by triggering that after waking from suspend....

I don't really have any one stand out reason. I first introduced myself to Linux in the late 1990s, buying a Red Hat CD and phone book sized manual that at the time cost a lot, especially as I was poor student. I think one of my tutors (I as doing computer studies) said that he ran Linux and I got nerdy and curious. It sadly didn't last long as too much of my other study was based around Windows.

Over time, Iecame to despise corporate monopolies, spying, manipulation, billion dollar advertising budgets, and turning people into products (not just Microsoft, but Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.) more and more, so I decided it was time (early 2010s) to give Linux a go again. I'd read people saying it was more usable for gaming than it used to be. Still required giving up some games since Steam Proton wasn't a thing yet but for me, I was making an concious choice to only support gaming that was Linux native (or games that I already owned that worked on WINE).

I distro hopped bit before settling on Mint. Used that for about 2 years and then got a new PC. Wanted to challenge myself more and went with Arch. I have enjoyed the customisation, freedom, privacy and ethically conscious choice ever since.

I wouldn't say I'm obsessed but I certainly try and free other people from the shackles of non-floss software as much as I can.

Back about two decades when I was using Windows and it was till easily customisable, I changed the bsod colour to red for funsies. Windows being Windows crashed and went to my red screen of death - my ex's cousin saw it and thought it was something really really bad, "Wow, a red screen, never seen that before. Must be even worse than blue". No mate, I just customise the shit out of anything I touch 😅

About a decade ago I told my spouse I wanted to customise my PC with a perspex case and some lighting inside. He was all bleurgh, why would you want to do that?! His current PC has a glass side and rainbow lights inside.

I also stand by this claim and have since the 90s. Thank you and good day, sir.

Some people still do raise them for food 🙂

When you've got not fridge and the environment isn't always condusive to curing and preserving meat, it's very handy to raise an animal that's a smaller amount of meat (say one meal) than something like a goat, pig, chicken or cow.

They breed easily and rapidly, eat scraps and vegetation that humans normally don't. So folks keep a herd of Guinea pigs and just slaughter whatever they need for a meal.

It's very clever and much more environmentally friendly than clearing forest for larger animals.

I would just move on. Some people have a bee in their bonnet and can't look past their own problems and see why other folks might find certain discussions useful.

Personally, when I was first looking at switching to Linux (and then through distro hopping) I found discussion like these great as I could see other people's reasons for choosing the distro they did.

My first flavour was Red Hat back in the late 90s. It's a shame I didn't give it more of a go back then. Then Mint for a couple of years in the earlyish 2010s before finally settling on Arch where I've been for almost a decade now.

But the hurtful comments leave a bigger mark than the good ones

As a volunteer for a charity, I feel this so much. I work incredibly hard to help people, I get paid nothing for my time. The entitlement and rude demands burns me out way faster. Especially when people seem to put far more effort into complaining and being rude than they do thanking me or showing appreciation for what we do.

I agree. I call myself a closet naturist because I'm all for the human body just being a human body and not ridiculously hyper-sexualised. But I'm also a sexual abuse survivor and that same hyper-sexualisation makes me very wary and anxious around people who are not also naturists.
I've been assaulted way too many times WITH clothes on to trust the general population who can't comprehend that a naked body =/= sex and an open invitation.

It wouldn't surprise me if the popularity was artificially inflated. Social media has known for a while now that encouraging outrage drives views and clicks. Coupled with Reddit using bots when it was first up to artificially populate the site, there has probably always been some bullshittery going on, it's just become more obvious now. I unsubbed to subs like r/facepalm and all the other rage generating subs because they were having a detrimental effect on my mental health and because it was obvious they were encouraging and driving outrage for clicks.
